आज का सुभाषित / Today's Subhashita.

संपत्सु  महतां  चित्तं  भवत्युत्पलकोमलं |
आपत्सु  च महाशैलं शिलासंघात कर्कशम्  || -भर्तृहरि (नीतिशतक)

भावार्थ -      महान व्यक्तियों  का स्वभाव उनके सुखी और समृद्ध होने
पर भी एक पुष्प के समान कोमल होता  है | परन्तु यदि उनके ऊपर  कोई
विपत्ति आती है तो उस स्थिति में वह एक पर्वत की शिलाओं के समान
कठोर हो जाता है |

(इस सुभाषित का तात्पर्य यह है कि महान व्यक्ति धनवान  होने हुए भी
सहृदय बने रहते हैं और विपत्ति के समय पर भी विपरीत परिस्थितियों
का मुकाबला दृढता पूर्वक करते हैं |)

 Sampatsu mahataam chittam bhavatyutpalalomalam.
Apatsu cha mahaashailam shilaasanghaata karkasham.

Sampatsu =during the period of prosperity.   Mahataam =
mighty and great people.   Chittam = mind, thoughts.
Bhavatyutpalakomalam = bhavati +utpala+ komalam.
Bhavati = becomes.    Utpala = a flower.       Komalam  =
gentle., pleasing.    Aapatsu = hard times, distress.  Cha =
Mahaashailam =  a great mountain.          Shilaa = rock.
Sanghaat = heap.    Karkasham = hard, rugged.

i.e.    During the period of prosperity the heart of great men
it  is kind and soft like a flower.  But  while going through
bad times it becomes as hard as rocks of a mountain.

(By the use of a metaphor the author wants to convey that
great and noble  are always kind towards others during the
the period of their prosperity, and while passing through
bad times, they remain firm and determined as a rock and
face the hardships bravely.)
