आज का सुभाषित / Today's Subhashita.

आरम्भ गुर्वी क्षयणी क्रमेण
लघ्वी पुरा दीर्घमुपैति पश्चात्  |
दिनस्य पूर्वार्धपरार्ध भिन्ना
छायेव मैत्री खलसज्जनानाम्  || -भर्तृहरि (नीति शतक )

भावार्थ -  सूर्य के प्रकाश से उत्पन्न छाया दिन के पूर्वार्ध
(सूर्योदय से मध्याहन तक) और परार्ध (मध्याह्न से सूर्यास्त )
में  अलग प्रकार की होती है |  पूर्वार्ध में पहले वह् बहुत लम्बी
होती है और क्रमशः छोटी होती जाती है | मध्याह्न के पश्चात्
शीघ्र  ही वह्  पुनः बडी  होने लगती है |  इसी प्रकार से दुष्ट और
सज्जन व्यक्तियों से की गयी मित्रता  भी प्रभावित होती है |

(इस  सुभाषित में दुष्ट व्यक्तियों से मित्रता की तुलना दिन के
पूर्वार्ध में उत्पन्न हुई छाया से की गयी  है , अर्थात प्रारम्भ में तो
प्रगाढ  पर अन्ततः  समाप्त हो जाती है | इसके विपरीत सज्जन
व्यक्तियों से मित्रता दिन के उत्तरार्ध  में उत्पन्न छाया के  समान
प्रारम्भ में तो साधारण  होती है परन्तु बाद में प्रगाढ मित्रता में
परिवर्तित हो जाती है | )

Arambh gurvee kshayanee kramena
laghvee puraa  deerghamupaiti pashchaat.
Dinasya poorvaardha-paraardha bhinna.
Chaayeva  maitree khala-sajjanaanaam.

Arambha = in the beginning.  Gurvee =long, bulky.
Kshayanee = destroying , reducing in size.   Kramena =
gradually.  Laghvee = short, small.   Puraa =shortly, soon.
Deerghamupaiti= deergham+ upaiti.   Deergham = long.
Upaiti = appears.   Pashchaat = afterwards.,  Dinasya=
of the day's.  Poorvaardha = forenoon.   Paraardha = after-
-noon.   Bhinna= different.      Chaayeva=chaaya+iva.
Chaayaa= shadow.  Iva=like the.  Maitree=friendship.
Khalasya = a wicked person's   Saajjanasya = of a noble
person's.

i.e.    The shadows created by the Sun's rays in the first half
of the day (sunrise to noon) is long in the beginning and
gradually becomes very short, whereas in the second half
(afternoon to sunset) it gradually becomes long.  The friend-
-hip with wicked persons and noble persons  is also affected
respectively in the same manner.

(By the use of a metaphor of different types of shadows
created by the Sun's rays, the author of this Subhashita
has highlighted that the friendship with wicked persons is
very close in the beginning  but gradually ends like the
shadows in the forenoon, whereas the friendship with noble
persons may be nominal in the  beginning but develops into
a close friendship like the lengthening shadows in the second
half of the day.)
