Santosham paramaaesthaaya sukhaarthee samyato bhavet.
Santoshamoolam hi sukham duhkhamoolam viparyayah.
Santosha = contentedness. Paramaasthaaya = parama +sthaaya.
Paramaa=highest, absolute. Sthaya=permanent. Sukharthee=
a person who seeks happiness or pleasure. Smyato= self control.
Bhavet = should be. Santoshamoolam = santosh +moolam.
Moolam = the root cause. Hi = surely. Sukham = happiness.
Duhkhamoolam = the root cause of misery and sorrow.
Viparyayah = antonym ( a word having opposite meaning i.e.
dissatisfaction, the opposite of satisfaction.)
i.e. A person who desires absolute happiness in his life , must
have full control over his desires and remain satisfied over his lot,
because being contented is the root cause of happiness , and its
opposite being always discontented is the root cause of all woes
and miseries.
(There is no end to the desires among men. Therefore it is said that if
wishes were horses fools would ride on them, The desires soon
turn into greed. So it is essential to have a control over desires if
one wants to be happy in his life. Otherwise in spite of having every
thing a person may still feel himself as a poor person. The theme
of the above Subhashita is based on this fact of Life.)
