सत्यं ब्रूयात्प्रियं ब्रूयान्न ब्रूयात्सत्यमप्रियम् |
प्रियं च नानृतं ब्रूयाद्देष धर्मः सनातनः ||
मनुस्मृति (४/१३८ )
भावार्थ - मनुष्य को चाहिये कि वह ऐसा वचन बोले जो सत्य
हो तथा प्रिय हो, और ऐसा कदापि न बोले जो असत्य और अप्रिय
हो | महर्षियों ने इसी को सनातन धर्म माना है |
( मनुस्मृति का उपर्युक्त श्लोक बहुत प्रसिद्ध है और सदैव उद्धृत
किया जाता है , परन्तु व्यवहार में इसका उल्टा ही हो रहा है और उस
का दुष्प्रभाव भी सर्वत्र दिखाई दे रहा है | )
Satyam brooyaatpriyam brooyaanna brooyaatsatyamapriyam .
Priyam cha naanrutam brooyaaddesha dharmah sanaatanah..
Satyam = the truth. Brooyaat = speak. Priyam = liked ,
pleasantly. Brooyaanna = brooyaat + na. Na = not.
Brooyaatsatyamapriyam = brooyaat + satyam + apriyam.
Apriyam = unpleasant. Naanrutam = na + anrutam. Anrutam=
untrue. Brooyaadesh = brooyaat + esha. Esha =this..
Dharmah = religion, religious austerity. Sanatanah =eternal.
i.e. People should always ensure always to speak only the
truth and should never speak untrue and unpleasant words.
Wise sages have, therefore, declared this as a part of the eternal
Religion (religious austerity).
(The above 'shloka' is also an often quoted one, but hardly
implemented in daily life, and the consequences are there for
every one to see.)
