मृतं शरीरमुत्सृज्य काष्टलोष्ट समं क्षितौ |
विमुखा बान्धवा यान्ति धर्मस्तमनुगच्छति ||

भावार्थ - मनुष्य की मृत्यु हो जाने पर उसके परिवार के लोग
उसके मृत शरीर को लकडी और मिट्टी के ढेर की तरह पृथ्वी पर
डाल कर उसकी ओर से अपना मुंह फेर कर अपने अपने कार्यों में
व्यस्त हो जाते हैं | ऐसे समय उसका साथ देता है तो केवल उसके
द्वारा धार्मिक आचरण से अर्जित किया हुआ पुण्य और कीर्ति |
(सनातन धर्म की यह मान्यता है कि यदि कोई व्यक्ति अपने जीवन
काल में धर्म का पालन करता है तो उसे 'पुण्य' और यश प्राप्त होता
है जो कि उसकी मृत्यु के बाद भी उसका साथ देते हैं | यही भावना इस
सुभाषित में व्यक्त की गयी है |
Mrutam shareeramutsrujya kaashta-loshta-samam kshitau.
Vimukhaa baandhava yaanti dharmastamanugacchati.
Mrutam = dead. Shareeramutsrujya = shareeram +utsrujya.
Shareeram = body. Utsrujya = having disposed. Kaashta=
wood. Losht = lump of earth. Samam = like a. Kshitau =
on the ground. Vimukhaa = turn away from. Baandhavaa =
family members. Yaanti =become. Dharmastamanugacchati=
Dharmah+ tu + anugacchati. Dharmah = religious austerity.
to + only, but. Anugacchati = accompanies .
i.e. After the death of a person, his family members dispose
his dead body like a heap of wood and a lump of earth, and after
turning away from him continue with their activities. Only his
the fame and 'punya' earned by him by observing religious austerity
practiced by him during his lifetime accompanies him.
(In 'Sanatan Dharma' ,the Hindu Religion, there is the concept that
if a person observes religious austerity he earns certain plus points
called 'punya' , which make him famous help him to earn a place in
Heaven . This concept has been mentioned in the above Subhashita.)
