नेता यस्य वृहस्पतिः प्रहरणं वज्रं सुराः सैनिकाः
स्वर्गो दुर्गमनुग्रह : किल हरेरैरावतो चारणाः |
इत्येश्वर्यबलान्वितोSपि बलिभिर्भग्नः परैः संगरे
तद्व्यक्तं वरमेव दैवशरणं धिक् धिक् वृथा पौरुषम् ||

भावार्थ - जिन का नेतृत्व स्वयं देवगुरु वृहस्पति करते हैं , वज्र
जिनका शक्तिशाली शस्त्र है और अन्य देवगण सैनिक हैं , निवास
स्थान स्वर्ग एक किले के समान सुदृढ है ,शक्तिशाली ऐरावत हाथी
जिनका सेवक (वाहन) है और स्वयं श्री हरि ( विष्णु भगवान ) जिन
के संरक्षक हों, ऐसे बलशाली देवराज इन्द्र की भी सभी शक्तियां
दानवों से युदध करने में व्यर्थ हो जाती हैं और उन्हें भी अपने भाग्य
के भरोसे रहना पडता है तो ऐसे ऐश्वर्य और पौरुष को धिक्कार है |
( इस सुभाषित में इसी तथ्य को प्रतिपादित किया गया है कि भाग्य के
सामने महान से महान व्यक्ति का बल पौरुष भी प्रभावहीन हो जाता है |)

Svargo durgamanugrahh kila harerairaavato chaaranaah.
ityeshvaryabalaanvitopi balibhirbhagnah paraih sangare.
Tadvyaktam varameva daivasharanam dhik dhik vruthaa paurusham.
Netaa = mentor . Yasya = whose. Vruhaspatih = name of the
Guru (teacher and counselor) of Indra, the King of Gods.
Praharanam = weapon. Vajra = Thunderbolt, the main weapon
of Indra. Suraah = other Gods. Sanikaah = soldiers. Svargo=
Name of the Kingdom of Indra. Durgamanugrahah = Durgam +
anugrahah. Durgam = castle. Anugrahah = rear guard, protector.
Kila = supposedly. Harerairaavato = Haraih + Airaavato. Haraih=
Hari , another name of supreme God Vishnu. Airavato = the name
of the elephant used as a mount by Indra. Chaarana = attendant.
Ityeshvaryabaalaanvitopi = iti +aishvaryaa+balaanvitao + api.
Iti = all this. Aishvarya = wealth. Balaanvito = possessing power.
Api = even. Balibhirbhagnah = Balibhih+ bhagno. Balibhih =
various other strengths, Bhagne = destroyed, of no use. Paraih=
others i.e. his enemies the Demons. Sangare= fighting. Tadvyaktam =
then obviously. Varameva = best way. Daiva= destiny, fate.
Sharanam = protection, asylum. Dhik = fie. Vruthaa = futile,
in vain. Paurusham = valour, strength.
i.e. His mentor is the sage Vruhaspati , 'Vajra' is his most powerful
weapon, various gods are his soldiers, 'Svarga' his kingdom is safe and
secure like a fort, the elephant 'Airaavat' is his mount, and the Supreme
God 'Hari' is supposedly his protector. All these powers possessed by
Indra , the ruler of Heaven are of no use while fighting with Demons and
he is totally at the mercy of his destiny. Then fie on such power and pelf.
(The idea behind this Subhashita is that however powerful a person may
be, he is helpless before his destiny.
