भग्नाSSषस्य करन्डपीडिततनोर्म्लानेन्द्रियस्य क्षुधा
कृत्वाSSखुर्विवरं स्वयं निपतितो नक्तं मुखे भोगिनः |
तृप्तस्तत्पिशितेन सत्वरमसौ तेनैव यातः पथा
लोकाः पश्यत दैवमेव हि नृणां वृद्धौ क्षये कारणं ||

भावार्थ - एक संपेरे द्वारा पकडा गया सर्प बांस की एक टोकरी में
बन्द भूख से पीडित थका हुआ पडा था | तभी रात में एक चूहा उस टोकरी
में एक छेद कर स्वयं उस सर्प के मुंह में चला गया | चूहे के मांस को खा
कर और तृप्त हो कर सर्प भी तुरन्त उसी रास्ते से टोकरी से बाहर आ
गया जिस से चूहा अन्दर गया था | लोगो देखो तो ! किस प्रकार भाग्य
ही मनुष्यों में वृद्धि और क्षय का कारण होता है |
{तुलसीदास जी ने इसी बात को इस दोहे में बडे ही सुन्दर रूप से प्रस्तुत
किया है :- " तुलसी जसि भवितव्यता तैसी मिलइ सहाइ | आपुनु
आवइ ताहि पहिं ताहि तहां लै जाइ || }
Bhagnaashasya karandapeeditatanormlaanendriyasya kshudhaa.
Krutvaakhurvivaram svyam nipatito naktm mukhe bhoginah.
Truptastatpishitena satvaramasau tenaiva yaatah pathaah.
Lokaah pashyat daivameva hi nrunaam vruddhau khsye kaaranam.
Bhagnashasya = bhagna+aashasya. Bhagna=curved. Aashasya=
a snake's . Karanda +peedita +tanoh+ mlaana+indriyayasya.
Karanda= a basket of bamboo wicker work. Peedita = distressed.
Tanoh = body. Mlaana = exhausted. Indriyasya = organs.
Kshudhaa = hunger. Krutvaakhurvivaram = Krutva+ aakhuh +
vivaram. Krutvaa = done. Akhu = a mouse. Vivaram = hole.
Svyam = himself. Nipatito = fallen down. Naktum = night.
Mukhe = mouth. Bhoginah = eating. Truptah = satiated.
Tat = that. Pishitena= by the flesh of the mouse, Satvaram =
speedily. Asau = such. Tenaiva = the same. Yaatah = went.
Pathah= route, way. Lokaah=people. Pashya=see. Daivameva =
Destiny alone. Hi = surely, really. Nrunaam = men. Vruddhau=
Growth. Kshaye = decay. Karanam = reason.
i.e. A snake catcher had put a snake in a basket made of bamboo
wicker work. There the snake was lying distressed and hungry. In
the night a mouse bored a hole in the basket and landed on the mouth
of the hungry snake, who, after eating the flesh of the mouse did not
spare even a moment and came out of the same hole made by the
mouse. O people ! see how destiny alone is responsible for the
prosperity and downfall of people .
(A Hindu poet has summed up this aspect in a couplet the summary
of which is that destiny does not come to a person , but forces him
to go to that place where he will meet his destiny, as in the case of
the mouse detailed in the above Subhashita..)
