आज का सुभाषित / Today's Sibhashita.

गुणिनोSपि  हि सीदन्ति  गुणग्राही न  चेदिह  |
सगुणः  पूर्णकुम्भोSपि  कूप  एव निमज्जति  ||- सुभाषित रत्नाकर

भावार्थ -    इस संसार में गुणवान व्यक्तियों को ही कष्ट उठाने
पडते हैं न कि उनकी प्रतिभा का उपयोग करने वालों को | देखो तो  !
केवल उसी घडे को एक कुवें  में डुबाते हैं जो सगुण ( एक लंबी रस्सी
से युक्त ) होती  है |

(संस्कृत में 'गुण' शब्द के अनेक अर्थ होते हैं |  इस सुभाषित में 'गुण' के
दो अर्थों (१) विद्वान और गुणवान व्यक्ति  तथा (२) एक रस्सी ) को
प्रयुक्त किया गया है |  एक कुवें से पानी निकालने के लिये घडे की गर्दन
में एक लम्बी रस्सी बांध कर घडे को पानी में डुबाया जाता है | इस प्रक्रिया
को एक उपमा के रूप में प्रयुक्त कर यह प्रतिपादित किया गया है कि जब
कोई गुणवान व्यक्ति किसी अन्य व्यक्ति के पास नौकरी करता है तो
केवल उसी को कष्ट उठाना पडता है न कि उसे नौकर रखने वाले को |)

Guninopi hi seedanti gunagraahee na chediha.
Sagunaah poornakumbhopi koopa eva nimajjati,

Gununopi = gunino + api.    Gunno = virtuous persons.
Api = even.    Hi = surely.    Seedanti =  are distressed.
Gunagraahee = persons acknowledging or appreciating
merit or good qualities.    Chediha  = chet + iha.   chet =
if.   Iha = here, in this world.    Sagunaah = (i) having a
rope or a string  (ii) having virtues.    Poornakumbhopi=
poornakumbho +api .  Poornakumbho=  a pitcher full of
water.     Koopa = a well    Eva = thus,    Nimajjati =
sink, drown.

i.e.    In this world only noble and virtuous persons have to
face difficulties and hardships and not those persons who
patronize them with a view to utilizing their virtues for their
benefit.   Just see !   how only that pitcher is immersed in
the water of a well which has a  long rope ('guna') attached
to its neck.

(In this Subhashita by skillfully using the two meanings of
the word 'Guna' , and using the simile of drawing water out
of a well, the author has emphasized that only the virtuous
persons have to suffer and not the persons who patronize them
to utilize their services.)
