आज का सुभाषित / Today;s Subhashita.

लक्ष्मि क्षमस्व वचनीयमिदं दुरुक्त -
मन्धोभवति पुरुषास्त्वदुपासनेन   |
नोचेत्कथं कमलपत्रविशालनेत्रो
नारायणः स्वपिति पन्नगभोगतल्पे  ||- सुभाषित रत्नाकर

भावार्थ -    हे विशाल नेत्रों वाली और कमल पुष्प पर आसीन
देवी  लक्ष्मी !   मेरे द्वारा आपके प्रति कहे गए  इन दुर्वचनों
के लिये मुझे कृपया  क्षमा करें | जो भी  पुरुष आपके उपासक
हैं वे मदान्ध हो जाते हैं  | अन्यथा बताओ तो आपके पतिदेव
भगवान विष्णु क्यों शेषनाग की कुण्डली को एक पलंग  की
तरह प्रयुक्त कर उस पर शयन करते हैं  ?

(संस्कृत वाङ्ग्मय में हास्य और व्यङ्ग्य विधा का भरपूर उपयोग
किया गया है और देवी देवताओं को भी इस हेतु प्रयुक्त करने में भी
संकोच नहीं किया है |  लक्ष्मी को चञ्चला भी कहा गया है | उपर्युक्त
सुभाषित परोक्ष रूप से उन व्यक्तियों के ऊपर व्यङ्ग्य है जो धन का
सदुपयोग न कर उसका अत्यन्त ही अभद्र प्रदर्शन करते हैं जैसा आज
कल सर्वत्र दिखाई देता है | )

Lakshmi kshamasva vachaneeyamidam durukta-
mandhobhavati   purushaastvadupaasanena.
Nochetkatham  kamalapatra vishaalanetre.
Naarayanah svapiti pannagabhogatalpe.

Lakshmi = name of the Goddess of riches.   Kshamasva =
forgive me.  Vachasvam = words spoken by me.   Idam=
these.   Duruktam = improper words.   Andhee - blind.
Bhavati=become.  Purushaastvadupaasanena = purushaah+
tvat + upaasanena.     Purushaah = persons.   Tvat =your.
Upaasanena = by worshiping.   Nochetkatham = no chet +
katham.    No chet = otherwise.   Katham = in what way.
Kamalapatra = leaf of thoue lotus flower.  Vishaalanetro =
large beautiful eyes.   Naaraayanah = God Vishnu, the
consort of Goddess Lakshami.   Svapiti=sleeps.   Pannaga =
a snake (here the reference is to the  'Sheshnaag' the king of
serpants, whose coil is used as  God a bed by God Vishnu.
Bhoga = body (coil of a serpant)   Talpe = bed,  couch.

i.e.   O Goddess Lakshmi having beautiful eyes and sitting on
a lotus flower !  please forgive me for using harsh words for
criticizing you.  Whosoever worships you becomes power drunk.
Otherwise , tell me how is it that your consort the God Vishnu
uses the coil of  'Sheshnaag' (the king of serpents) as  a  bed and
sleeps over it ?

(  In Sanskrit literature  laughter and satire is used extensively and
even Gods have not been spared.  Lakshmi is also called fickle
minded.   This Subhashita is a satire on super rich persons and their
eccentric ways of splurging their wealth in most vulgar way. )
