यशो यस्माद्भस्मीभवति वनवन्हेरिव वनं |
निदानं दुःखानां यदवनिरुहाणामिव जलम् ||
न यत्रस्याच्छायाSSतप इव तपःसंयमकथा
कथं चित्तान्मिथ्यावचनमभिधत्ते न मतिमान ||
भावार्थ - सज्जन और विद्वान व्यक्ति किसी भी कारण से कभी भी
असत्य वचन नहीं कहते हैं क्यों कि ऐसा करने से उनकी तपस्या और
संयम भी नष्ट हो जाते है जो कि तेज धूप में छाया के समान उनकी
रक्षा करते हैं | असत्यवादी व्यक्ति का यश उसी प्रकार भस्म (नष्ट )
हो जाता है जिस प्रकार दावाग्नि (वन में लगी भयंकर आग) से संपूर्ण
वन नष्ट हो जाता है | यह विपरीत परिस्थिति ही उसके दुःखों का उसी
प्रकार मुख्य कारण होता है जिस प्रकार वन के वृक्ष जल के अभाव के
कारण सूखने लगते हैं |
Yasho yasmaadbhasmeebhavati vanavanheriva vanam.
Nidaanam duhkhaanaam yadvaniruhaanaamiva jalam.
Na yatra syaaccchaayaatapa iva tapah-smyam-kathaa;
Katham chittanmithyaavachanamabhishate naa matimaan.
Yasho = fame. Yasmadbhasmeebhavati = Yasmaat +
bhasmee+ bhavati. Yasmaat = as, like Bhasmee =
ashes. Bhavati = becomes Vanavanheriva = vana-
vanheh + iva. Vanavanheh= a raging fire in a forest.
Iva = like a. Nidaanam = primary cause of.
Duhkhaanaam = sorrows and miseries. Yadvaniruhaa-
naamiva = yat + vaniruhaanaam + iva. Yat = that.
Vaniruhanaaam = trees in a forest. Iva = than(comparison)
Jalam = water. Na = not. Yatre = where. Syaat+chaaya+
aatapa. Syaat= perhaps. Chaaayaa = shadee. Aatapa=
Sunlight. Iva = like. Tapah = religious austerity. Smyama=
self-control. Katha = how ? Katham = in what way, how?
Chittaam + mithyaa+ vachanam + abhidhatte. Chittam =
mind. Mithaa = false. Vachanam = promise. Abhidhatte=
speak. Na = not. Matimaan = intelligent persons.
i.e. Noble and intelligent persons perhaps never say anything
which is not true, because it results in loss of their religious
austerity and self-control, which protects them like a shade from
the scorching Sun. The fame of an untruthful persons gets
destroyed just like a raging fire in a forest which burns the forest
into ashes. This adverse situation is the root cause of his miseries,
just like the trees in a forest withering for want of water.
