आज का सुभाषित / Today's Subhashita.

भूर्जः  परोपकृतये  निजकवचविकर्तनं  सहते |
परबन्धनाय  तु  शणः  प्रेक्षध्वमिहाSन्तरं  कीदृक्  ||
                            - सुभाषित रत्नाकर (शार्ङ्गधर )

भावार्थ -   भूर्ज (भोज) का वृक्ष परोपकार के लिये अपनी छाल के
उतारने का कष्ट भी सहन करता है | परन्तु सन (जूट) का पौधा
लोगों को बांध कर बन्दी बनाने के लिये अपनी छाल उतारवा देता
है | देखो तो !  इन दोनों में कितना अन्तर है  ?

(प्रस्तुत सुभाषित एंक  'अन्योक्ति' है  जो कि  'षणान्योक्ति ' के
अन्तर्गत वर्गीकृत है |  लाक्षणिक रूप से इसका तात्पर्य यह है कि
सज्जन और महान व्यक्ति परोपकार के लिये बडे से बडा त्याग
करने में संकोच नहीं करते हैं , परन्तु दुष्ट व्यक्ति दूसरों को हानि
पहुंचाने के लिये ही ऐसा करते हैं |    प्राचीन काल में भोजपत्र का
उपयोग पुस्तक आदि लिखने मे वर्तमान समय के कागज के स्थान
पर प्रयुक्त होता था | )

Bhoorjah paropkrutaye  nija-kavacha-vikartanam sahate.
Para- bandhanaaya tu shanah preksadhvamihaantaram keedruk.

Bhoorjah = A Birch tree.( in olden times, when paper had not
been invented, its bark was used for writing books on it.)
Paropakrutaye = as a benevolent deed, assisting others.  Nija =
one's own.    Kavacha = outer bark, armour.    Vikartanam =
cutting, peeling.   Sahate =tolerates.  Para =others.   Bandhanaaya=
for arresting or tying.   Tu = and ,but.   Shasnah =  hemp plant.
Prekshadvamihaantaram = prekshadhvam + ihaam +antaram.
Prekshadhvaam = behold.    Ihaaam = here    Antaram =difference
Keedruk = what a .

i.e.    A Birch tree allows its bark to be peeled off as a benevolent
deed , whereas a hemp (jute) plant does the same for tying up or
arresting people.   Oh !  what a difference in the approach of the
Birch tree and hemp plant ?

( The above Subhashita is also an 'Anyokti '  (allegory).  The idea
behind it is that noble persons do not hesitate to make any sacrifice
to help others, whereas mean and wicked persons are motivated to
do so to harm  others.)
