आज का / Today's Subhashita.

हस्थी स्थूलतनुः सचाSङ्कुशवशः किं हस्ति मात्रोSङ्कुशो
वज्रेणाSभिहता:  पतन्ति  गिरयः किं शैलमात्रः  पविः          |
दीपे प्रज्ज्वलिते विनश्यति तमः किं दीपमात्रं तम -
स्तेजो  यस्य विराजते  स बलवान् स्थूलेषु  कः  प्रत्ययः       ||

भावार्थ -          हाथी भारी भरकम शरीर वाला होता है परन्तु एक
छोटा सा अङ्कुश उसे वश में कर लेता है |  तो क्या हाथी  के सामने
अङ्कुश का कोई महत्त्व नहीं ?   वज्र  (आकाशीय विद्युत) की चोट से 
के बडे बडे पर्वत शिखर टूट कर गिर जाते हैं , तो क्या पर्वत  के सामाने
वज्र  कुछ भी नहीं ?  एक दीपक के प्रज्ज्वलित होने से अन्धकार दूर
हो जाता है ,तो क्या अन्धकार के समाने दीपक मात्र एक दीपक  है ?
निष्कर्ष यही है कि जिस किसी का भी तेज (प्रभुत्व) अधिक होता है वही
बलवान कहलाता है |   मात्र  आकार में बडा होने से ही किसी की क्षमता पर
विश्वास नहीं किया जा सकता है |

(इसी भावना को रामायण में तुलसीदास जी  ने इस प्रकार व्यक्त  किया है :-
मन्त्र परम लघु जासु बल विधि हरि हर सुर सर्व | महामत्त गजराज कहुं
बस कर अङ्कुश खर्ब || )

Hastee sthoolatanuh sa-cha-aankusha-vaashah kim hasti
maatromkusho.
Vajrenaabhihataa patanti girayah kim shailamaatrah pavih.
Deepe prajjvalite vinashyati tamah kim deepamaatram tama-
stejo yasya viraaajate sa  balavaan sthooleshu kah pratyayh.

 Hastee = an elephant.    Sthoolatanuh = large body.  Sa =he.
cha = and.    Ankusha=an iron hook .  Vashah =under control.
Kim = what ?    Hasti = elephant.    Maatro = being nothing.,
merely.    Vajrenaa = by the 'Vajra' (the weapon of Indra,the
God of rain , in modern parlance the strike of the lightening)
Abhihataa=struck by.  Patanti=fall down.   Giraya=mountains.
Shailamaatrah = merely a small  hill.   Pavih = thunderbolt.
Deepe = an  oil lamp.  Prajjvalite = lighted.  Vinashyati = gets
destroyed.    Tamah = darkness.   Deepamaaram = merely a
lamp.   Tejo = authority, splendor.   Yasya = whose.  Viraajate=
rules, excels.   Sa = he.   Balavaan = powerful.   Sthooleshu =
big in size.   Kah = what     Pratyayah = trust, faith.

i.e.     A small iron hook can control a large elephant . Is the hook
merely a hook for an  elephant ? Big mountains crumble when the
lightening strikes them. So, is the lightening  merely a lightening
for a mountain ?   When a lamp is lit  the darkness disappears.
So, is the lamp merely a lamp before the darkness ? The conclusion
is that between small and big whosoever rules is termed as powerful
and some thing merely of big size can not be trusted.
