नक्षत्राणि बहूनि सन्ति परितः पूर्णोदयान्यम्बरे
किं तैः शान्तिमुपैति दीर्घतिमिरं किं वार्धिरुज्जृम्भते |
किं स्यादार्तचकोरपारणविधिर्भ्रातः सुधादीधिते
तन्नूनं भुवनैकतापशमनः श्लाघ्यस्तवैवोदयः ||

भावार्थ - ओ चन्द्रमा ! इस आकाश में बहुत सारे नक्षत्र ओर तारागण
हैं परन्तु क्या वे उस में छाये हुए गहन अन्धकार को दूर कर सकते है , या
समुद्र को उद्वेलित कर उसमें ज्वार उत्पन्न कर सकते हैं ,या तुम्हारे एक
बन्धु के समान तुम्हारी किरणों की सुधा के आकांक्षी चकोर पक्षी के कष्ट
को दूर कर सकते हैं ? यह सब कार्य सम्पन्न करना केवल तुम्हारे द्वारा ही
सम्भव है , जिस के कारण सभी तुम्हारी प्रसंशा करते हैं |
(यह एक जनश्रुति है कि चकोर पक्षी चन्द्रमा से एकांगी प्रीति करता है और
सारी रात चन्द्रमा की ओर टकटकी लगाये रहता है | इसका उपयोग इस
सुभाषित में किया गया है | )
Nakshatraani bahooni santi paritah poornodayaanyambare.
Kim taih shaantimupaiti deergha-timiram kim vaardhirujjrumbhate.
Kim syaadaarta-chakora-paaranavidhir-bhraatahh sudhaa-deedhite.
Tannoonam bhuvanaika-taapa-shamanah shlaaghyastavaivodayah.
Nakshatraani = constellation of Stars. Bahooni =too many. Santi =
there are. Paritah = all around. poornodayaat + ambare.
Poornodaayaani= after rising of full Moon. Ambare = the Sky.
Kim = what ? Taih = they. Shaantim + upaiti. Shaantim = rest,
relief. Upaiti =achieves, approaches. Deergha = deep. Timiram =
darkness. Vaardhirujjrumbhate = Vaardhi = the Ocen. Ujjrmbhate=
expands, creates tides. Syaat + aarta+chakor +paarana+vidhih+
Bhratah. Syaat = perhaps. Aarta= distressed, Chkora = name of
a bird very fond of the Moon. Paarana = delivering . Vidhih =manner.
Bharaatah = brother. Sudhaa = nectar. Deedhite = desires, wishes.
Tannoonam = therefore. Bhuvanaika = of the Earth. Taapa = heat.
Shamanah =easing, pacifying. Shlaaghyah +tava +eva +udayah.
Shlaaghya = worth praising. Tava = your. eva = like this.
Udayah = rise in the sky.
i.e. O Moon ! there are too many constellations of Stars all around the
Sky before your full rise, but can they remove the pitch darkness of the
Sky and induce tides in the Ocean, or provide brotherly relief to the
distressed 'Chakra' bird, who desires the nectar of your rays falling on the
earth ? Only you are able to accomplish all these tasks and also cool the
heated Earth , for which your very much appreciated.
(It it believed that the Chataak bird has one sided affection towards the
Moon and it stares at it throughout the night. This belief has been used
in this Subhashita.)
