Andham daridrinamapi priyayaa viheenam.
vekshyeshvare vadati yaacha varam tvamekam.
Netrae na naapi vasuno vanitaam sa vavre,
chatraabhiraamasutadarshanamityuvaacha.
Andham = a blind person. Daridrinamapi = daridrinim + api.
Daridrinim = a beggar.. Api = even. Priyayaa = wife,
female friend. Vheenam = without. Veekshyeshvare =
veekshya + ishvaare. Veekshya = on seeing. Ishvare = the God.
Vadati = says. Yaacha= solicit, Varam = boon. Tvamekam-
Tvam+ekam. Tvam = you. Ekam = one. Netre = eyes. Na =
not. Naapi = na + api. Vasuno =investments, clothes. Vanitaam=
wife. Sa = he ( the beggar) Vavre = cunningly asked for a boon.
Chatra+ abhiraama + suta + darshanam + it+ uvaacha. Chatra =
Umbrlla. Abhiraam = beautiful. (reference to a high status in the
society, where a person moves around ceremoniously under the shade
of a beautiful umbrella carried by his attendants.) Suta = son.
Darshanam = view,see. Iti = this. Uvaacha = said.
i.e. God Almighty by seeing a beggar who was blind and without
a wife, by way of compassion told the beggar to ask only one boon to
be fulfilled. The beggar cunningly asked the God to bless him with a
son entitled to use a ceremonial umbrella (a high dignitary or a ruler)
whom he should see through his own eyes.
(This Subhashita is an example of light humour, He cunningly asked for
such a boon which could be fulfilled only when he gets married and his
blindness is also removed . and it was actually a 'three in one' boon. )
