विद्वत्तम च नृपत्वं च नैव तुल्यं कदाचन |
स्वदेशे पूज्यते राजा विद्वान्सर्व्रत्र पूज्यते ||

भावार्थ - विद्वत्ता तथा नृपत्व (राजसी ठाठबाठ) की आपस में
तुलना कभी नहीं हो सकती है , क्यों कि एक राजा तो केवल अपने ही
देश में पूज्य होता है जब कि एक विद्वान व्यक्ति सर्वत्र पूज्य होता है |
(यह सुभाषित 'विद्वत्प्रशंसा ' शीर्षक के अन्तर्गत संकलित है | इसका
तात्पर्य यह है कि नृपत्व की तुलना में विद्वत्ता ही श्रेष्ठ होती है |)
Vidvattam cha nrupatvam cha naiva tulyam kadaachana.
Svdeshe poojyate Raajaa vidvaan-sarvatra poojyate.
Vidvattam = Scholarship. cha = and. Nrupatvam = Royalti.
Naiva = no, never. Tulyam = comparable. Kadachana = at
any time. Svadeshe = in one's own country. Poojyate =
honoured, revered. Raaja = a king, a ruler. Vidvaan =a scholar,
a learned person. Sarvatra = every where,
i.e. Scholarship and royalty are never comparable , because
a king is honoured within his own country, whereas a scholar
is revered every where .
( This Subhashita is categorised as "Vidvatprashmsaa" in praise
of Scholarship. The underlying idea is that scholarship is superior
than the royalty. )
