नाहं जलधर भवतश्चातक इव जीवनं याचे |
अहमस्मि नीलकण्ठो तव खलु तुष्यामि शब्दमात्रेण ||

भावार्थ - ओ बादल ! मैं एक चातक पक्षी जैसा नहीं हूं जो तुमसे
अपने जीवन की रक्षा के लिये भीख मांगता है | मैं तो नीलकन्ठ
पक्षी (मोर) हूं जो तुम्हारे गर्जने की ध्वनि मात्र को सुन कर ही संतुष्ट
हो जाता हूं |
(प्रस्तुत सुभाषित भी एक 'मयूरान्योक्ति ' है | संस्कृत साहित्य में
यह धारणा है कि चातक पक्षी केवल 'स्वाति' नक्षत्र काल में हुई वर्षा
का ही जल पीता है अन्यथा प्यासा ही रह जाता है | इस के विपरीत
एक मोर बादलों के गर्जने मात्र से ही प्रसन्न हो कर नृत्य करने लगता
है | लाक्षणिक रूप से इस का तात्पर्य यह है कि जो व्यक्ति संतोषी होता
है वह सदैव सुखी रहता है और इसके विपरीत जिस व्यक्ति की इच्छाa = lik ae
पूर्ति कठिन होती है वह सदैव असन्तुष्ट और दुःखी ही रहता है | )
Naaham jaladhar bhavatashchaatak iva jeevnam yaache.
Ahamasmi neelakantho tava khalu tushyaami shabdmaatrena,
Naaham = na +aham, Na = not. Aham = I Jaladhar = cloud
Bhavatashchaataka = Bhavatah + chaataka. Bhavatah = you.
Chaatak = name of a bird. Jeevanam = life. Yaache = begs for.
Ahamasmi = aham +asmi. Asmi = am. Neelakantho =a peacock
having a blue neck. Tava = your. Khalu =verily.. Tushyaami = will
be satisfied Shabdmaatrena =merely by the sound.
i.e. O cloud ! I am not like a Chatak bird , who begs water from
you to save his life. I am a Peacock, who is satisfied merely by
hearing your rumbling sound.
(This Subhashita is also an 'Anyokti' (allegory). In Sanskrit literature
it is said that the Chatak bird quenches its thirst from the rain water
falling on the earth during a particular celestial period and otherwise
remains thirsty. On the other hand the Peacock becomes happy and
starts dancing by merely hearing the rumbling sound of the clouds.
The underlying idea behind it is that those persons whose wants are
limited and are satisfied at whatever they get remain always happy
whereas those persons are very choosy always remain disgruntled .)
