आज का सुभाषित / Today's Subhashita.

सत्यंसत्यं  मुनेर्वाक्यं  नाSदत्तमुपतिष्ठति   |
अम्बुभिः पूरिता  पृथ्वी चातकस्य  मरुस्थली ||
                     - सुभाषित रत्नाकर (शार्ङ्गधर )

भावार्थ - महान मुनियों का यह कथन पूर्ण सत्य है कि  यदि कोई
वस्तु प्रदान किये जाने पर  भी यदि कोई व्यक्ति उसे नहीं लेता है
तो वह उस वस्तु से वञ्चित ही रहता है | यद्यपि यहपृथ्वी जलाशयों
से भरी पडी है परन्तु एक चातक पक्षी के लिये  तो वह एक मरुस्थल
के समान ही है |

(प्रस्तुत सुभाषित एक "चातकान्योक्ति " है | यह धारणा है कि चातक
पक्षी केवल स्वाति नक्षत्र में हुई वर्षा का जल पीता है और अन्यथा वह
प्यासा ही रह जाता है |  लाक्षणिक रूप से इस सुभाषित का तात्पर्य यह
है  कि इस ससार में  सब कुछ होते हुए भी भाग्यहीन व्यक्ति  उस से
वञ्चित ही रहते हैं, जैसा कि एक अन्य सुभाषित में भी कहा गया है कि -
"भाग्यहीना: न पश्यन्ति बहुरत्ना वसुन्धरा" |)

Satyam-satyam munervaakyam  naadattam-upathishati .
Ambubhih  pooritaa pruthvee  chaatakasya marusthalee.

Satyam = It iss true.   Munervakyam = muneih + vaakyam.
Muneih = of a Sage's    Vaakyam = saying.  Na = adattam+
upatishthati.    Na = not.   Adatta=  accepted.   Upatishthati=
be present, stays.    Ambubhih - water bodies.    Pooritaa=
filled.   Pruthvee = the Earth.    Chatakasya= for the Chatak
bird.    Marusthalee = a desert.

i.e.    The sages have truly said that if a person does not accept
any thing given to him, he continues to remains deprived of it.
Although the Earth is full of water bodies every where , for a
Chatak bird it is just like a desert.

(This Subhashita is a 'Chatakaanyokti' (allegory).  In Sanskrit
literature it is said that the 'Chatak' bird quenches its thirst from
the rain water falling on the Earth during a particular celestial
period and remains thirsty at other times. The underlying idea
behind it is that there are numerous things in this world but the
unlucky persons are not able to see and enjoy them . )
