आज का सुभाषित / Today's Subhashita.

सन्त्येव  गिलिताSSकाशा  महीयांसो  महीरुह:  |
तथापि जनताचित्ताSSनन्दनश्चन्दनद्रुमः       ||
                                 - सुभाषित रत्नाकर (स्फुट)

भावार्थ -   विशाल शीशम के वृक्ष सारे आकाश को आच्छादित किये
हुए बहुत सुशोभित होते हैं , परन्तु जनसामान्य के चित्त को चन्दन
के  वृक्ष ही अधिक आनन्दित करते हैं  |

(प्रस्तुत सुभाषित 'चन्दनान्योक्त्यः' शीर्षक से संकलित है | लाक्षणिक
रूप से इस का तात्पर्य यह है मात्र शरीर शौष्ठव से किसी का सम्मान
उतना नहीं होता जितना किसी व्यक्ति  का शरीर शौष्ठव  के साथ अन्य
गुणों के होने से होता है ,जैसे कि चन्दन का वृक्ष अपनी सुगन्ध के कारण
शीशमके वृक्ष की तुलना में अधिक आनन्दित  करता है |)

Tathaapi janataachittaanandanashchandanadrumah.

santyeva = santi + ava.     Santi = really.     Aiva =really.
Gilitaakaash =  Gilita + Aakaash.    Gilita= swallowed. 
covered,     Aakaash =the sky.   Maheeyaamsho = Mighty,
lofty.   Maheeruhah =Teak wood treee.  Tathaapi= even then.
Janataa = common people,    Chittaa - mind.   Anandanah =
pleasing.     Chandana = sandalwood.      Drumah = tree.

i.e   Mighty and tall Teak wood trees really cover the landscape
but even then the Sandalwood tree pleases more  the common
people .

(This Subhashita is an 'Anyokti'  (allegory) by using the Teakwood
tree and Sandalwood tree as a Metaphor.   Although Teakwood tree
is more majestic than the Sandalwood tree, people like Sandalwood
tree more, because of its fragrance.  So, the underlying idea behind
this Subhashita is that only size  and outward appearance does  not
matter much and a person must also have some virtues for pleasing
others.)
