यथा चतुर्भिः कनकं परीक्ष्यते निघर्षणच्छेदनतापताडनैः |
तथा चतुर्भिः पुरुषः परीक्ष्यते त्यागेन शीलेन गुणेन कर्मणा ||
- चाणक्य नीति ( ५/२)
भावार्थ - जिस प्रकार स्वर्ण की गुणवत्ता की परीक्षा करने
के लिये चार विधियां (१) कसौटी पर रगडना (२) काटना (३)
आग पर तपाना तथा (४) हथौडी से पीटना हैं, उसी प्रकार एक
पुरुष की परीक्षा भी चार प्रकार से (१) उसके अन्दर त्याग की
की भावना (२) उत्तम चरित्र (३) गुणों तथा (४) उसके द्वारा
किये गये शुभ कर्मों के द्वारा की जाती है |
Yathaa chaturbhih kanakam pareekshyate nigharshana-
-cchedana-taapa taadanaih.
Tathaa chaturbhih purushah pareekshyate tyaagena
sheelena gunena karmanaa.
Yathaa = for instance. Chaturbhih = in four ways.
Kanakam = Gold. Pareekshyate = is subjected to
tests. Nigharshana =rubbing. Chedan = cutting.
Taapa = heating. Taadanaih = hitting. Tathaa = in
the same manner. Purushah = a person. Tyagena=
by sacrifice. Sheelena = good character. Gunena =
virtues. Karmanaa = by (good) deeds.
i.e. For instance the purity of Gold is tested by four
methods, namely (i) by rubbing it on a touch stone, (ii)
by cutting it into pieces, (iii) by heating it and (iv) by
beating it, in the same manner the calibre of a person is
also tested by four methods, namely (i) by the instinct of
sacrifice in him (ii) by his character (iii) by his virtues,
and (iv) by his good deeds.
