आज का सुभाषित / Today's Subhashita.

हस्ती  अङ्कुशमात्रेण  वाजी हस्तेन ताड्यते  |     

शृङ्गी  लगुडहस्तेन  खड्गहस्तेन   दुर्जनः    ||

                                  - चाणक्य नीति (७/८ )

भावर्थ  -   हाथी को मात्र एक छोटे से अङ्कुश (लोहे का नुकीला
औजार)से  वश में किया जा सकता है तथा एक घोडा हाथ से एक
थपकी देने से ही वश में  किया जा सकता है |  बडे बडे सींगों वाले
पशुओं (गाय, बैल आदि ) को हाथ में पकडी  हुए एक लम्बी लाठी
से वश में किया  जा सकता है ,  परन्तु दुष्ट व्यक्तियों को वश में
करने के लिये तो हाथ में तलवार ही पकडनी  पडती  है |

(प्रस्तुत सुभाषित  का तात्पर्य यह  है कि  विभिन्न प्राणियों को वश
में करने के उपाय उनके स्वभाव और व्यवहार के अनुसार ही तय
किये जाते हैं |)

Hastee ankusha-maatrena  Vaajee  hastena taadyate.

Shrungee  laguda-hastena    khagdga-hastena durjanah.

Hastee - an elephant.   Ankusha=  a metallic hook.

sharp at one end,which the keeper of an elephant uses to

control the movements of the elephant.  Maatra = simply
merely.       Vaaji = a horse.      Hastena =  by a hand.
Taadyate = patting, striking.   Shrungee = animals having
big pointed horns e,g.  cows and bufallows.  Laguda =  a
long wooden staff.    Khadga = a sword,   Durjana=a wicked
and villainous person.

i.e.    An elephant can be controlled  simply by the use of a
pointed iron hook, whereas a horse can be controlled simply
by patting it.   Animals with long and sharp horns can be
controlled by a long staff held by a hand. However, wicked
persons can be controlled only by a sword held by a hand.

(The underlying idea behind this Subhashita is that different
living beings are controlled by different means, depending  on
their nature and behaviour.)
