वरं वनं व्याघ्र गजेन्द्र सेवितं
द्रुमालयं पत्र फलाम्बुसेवनम् |
तृणेषु शय्या शतजीर्णवल्कलं
न बन्धुमध्ये धनहीन जीवनम् ||
- चाणक्य नीति (१०/१२ )
भावार्थ - अपने निकट सम्बन्धियों के बीच में धनहीन हो कर
जीवन यापन करने की तुलना में तो व्याघ्रों और हाथियों से आक्रान्त
किसी घने वन में एक वृक्ष पर अपना निवास बना कर , वहां उपलब्ध
वनस्पतियों, फलों और जल का सेवन कर , घास फूस की शय्या में
शयन ,तथा वृक्षों की छाल के बने हुए अत्यन्त जीर्ण (फटे हुए ) वस्त्र
पहन कर जीवन यापन करना ही श्रेयस्कर है |
(इस सुभाषित में एक धनहीन व्यक्ति की व्यथा का वर्णन किया गया है
जिसे अपने धनवान निकट सम्बन्धियों के बीच में रहने से सदैव अपमान
सहना पडता है और व्यङ्ग्यात्मक रूप से यह कहा गया है कि उसकी तुलना
में वनवासी हो कर कष्ट सहना ही श्रेयस्कर है |)

Drumaaalayam patra-phalaambu-sevanam.
Truneshu shayyaa shata-jeerna-valkalam.
Na bandhumadhye dhanaheena jeevanam.
Varam = preferable. Vanam = a forest. Vyaaghra =
tiger. Gajendra = King Elephant. Sevitam = dwelt in.
Drumaalayam = dwelling in a tree. Patra + phala+
ambu. Patra =leaves. Phala =fruits. Ambu = water.
Sevanam = resorting to. Truneshu= grass. Shayyaa=
bed. Shata+jeerna + valkalam. Shata = hundred.
Jeerna = worn out. Valkalam = garments made of the
bark of a tree. Na = not. Bandhu = relatives. Madhye=
among, in the middle of. Dhanaheena=poor. Jeevanam=
existence, livelihood.
i.e. In stead of living as a poor person among one's close
relatives, it is far more preferable to live in a forest dominated
by tigers and elephants, making a tree as a home and for food
depend on the vegetation,fruits and water available there ,sleep
in a bed made of grass, wear badly torn garments made from the
bark of trees.
( In this subhashita the predicament of a poor person among his
rich relatives has been depicted in a sarcastic way by saying that
it is preferable to live in a forest full of wild animals and bear the
hardships but not the insult meted out to him by his rich relatives.)
