Shaanti--tulyam taapo naasti na santoshaatparam sukham.
Apatyam cha kalatram cha sataam sangatireva cha.
Shanti =peace of mind. Tulyam = comparable, equal to.
Tapo = religious austerity, penance. Naasti = not. na =not.
Santoshaat + param. Santoshaat = from contentedness.
Param =highest. Sukham = happiness. pleasure. Apatyam =
children, offsprings. Cha = and. Kalatraam = wife. Sataam=
noble and virtuous persons. Sangatih + eva, sangatih =
association with, Eva =also.
i.e. There is no other religious austerity comparable to maintaining
the peace of mind, and no happiness comparable to contentedness.
Besides this the other sources of happiness are obedient and able
children , a virtuous and loving wife and association with noble and
virtuous persons.
(There is no end to the desires of people , and if a person is contented
it makes no difference to him whether he is rich or poor. This has been
summed up in another Subhashita that only that parson is really poor
whose greed is uncontrollable . Otherwise if a person is mentally satis-
fied it makes no difference for him whether he is rich or poor.)
