Pruthivyaam treeeni ratnaani jalamannam subhashitam.
Moodhaih paashanakhandeshu ratnasmgya vidheeyate.
Pruthivyaam = in this Earth. Treeni = three. Ratnaani =
precious things. Jalamannam = jalam + annam. Jalam=
water. Annam = food. Subhashiam = eloquent and witty
sayings. Moodhaih = ignorant and stupid persons.
Paashaan= stone. Khandeshu = pieces, chips. Ratna=
precious stone. Smgya + name. Vidheeyate = consider.
i.e. There are only three precious things on this Earth, namely
water, food and 'Subhashitas' (eloquent and witty quotes by
learned scholars and poets), but ignorant and stupid people
consider colourful pieces of stones as precious stones.
(This shloka is in praise of 'Subhashitas' , a well known and
popular style of Sanskrit poetry, composed by numerous known
and unknown poets containing eloquent and witty remarks on
diverse subjects. These have been equated to water and food,
without which no livimg being can subsist on this Earth.)
