त्यजन्ति मित्राणि धनैर्विहीनं
पुत्राश्च दाराश्च सुह्रज्जनाश्च |
तमर्थवन्तं पुनराश्रयन्ति
अर्थो हि लोके मनुषस्य बन्धुः ||
- चाणक्य नीति (१५/५)
भावार्थ - किसी धनहीन व्यक्ति के मित्र, संतान , पत्नी तथा
घनिष्ठ मित्र भी उसका साथ छोड देते हैं | यदि वह फिर से
धनवान हो जाता है तो वे ही लोग फिर से उसके आश्रय में आ
जाते हैं | इसी लिये कहा गया है कि धन ही सामान्य जीवन में
मनुष्य का परम् मित्र है |
Tyajanti mitraani dhanairviheenam.
Putraashcha daaraashcha suhrajjanaashcha
Tamarthavantam punaraashryanri
Artho hi loke manushasya bandhuh.
Tyajanti = abandon, quit. Mitraani = friends. Dhanaih +
viheenam, dhanaih = wealth. Viheenam = without.
Putraah+cha. Pyife Suhrad + janaah + cha. Suhrad =
devoted friends. Janaah = person Tam +arthvantam
Tam = they. Artthvantam = wealthy. punah + aashrayanti.
Punah = again. Aashrayanti = depend upon. Artho =
wealth. hi =surely. Loke =in ordinary life. Manushasya =
man's Bandhuh=friend.

i.e. The friends, children , wife, and even devoted friends
of a person abandon him if he does not have any wealth. But
if per chance he becomes wealthy, all of them again come
back to him. That is why it is said in ordinary life that wealth
is a man's good friend.
