आहारनिद्राभय मैथुनानि
समानि चैतानि नृणां पशूनाम् |
ज्ञानं नराणामधिको विशेषो
ज्ञानेन हीनाः पशुभिः समाना ||
- चाणक्य नीति (१७/१७)
भावार्थ - जीवित रहने के लिये आहार की आवश्यकता ,
निद्रा , भय की भावना तथा कामवासना, ये प्रवृत्तियां
मनुष्यों और पशुओं में एक समान ही होती हैं | परन्तु
मनुष्यों में ज्ञान (अनेक विषयों की जानकारी) होना एक
अतिरिक्त विशेषता है | अतः जो व्यक्ति ज्ञान हीन होते हैं
वे पशुओं के समान ही जीवन व्यतीत करते हैं }
Aahaara nidraa bhaya maithunani.
Samaani chaitaani nrunaam pashoonaam.
Gyaanam naraanaamadhiko visheshah.
Gyaanena heenaa pashubhih samaanaa.
Aahaara = taking food. Nidra = sleep. Bhaya=
fear. Maithunani = sexual urge Samaani=
similar. Chaitaani = cha +etaani. Cha = and.
Aitaani = these. Nrunaam = humans. Pashoonaam =
animals. Gyaanam = knowledge about any thing
essential for living properly. Naraanaam =men.
Adhiko = more .Visheshah = special. Gyaanena =
of knowledge. Heena = devoid of. Pashubhih =
animals. Samaanaa = similar to.
i.e. The need of food for remaining alive, sleep.
fear and sexual urge, these emotions are similar in
human beings and animals. But the special quality
of having knowledge about any thing is additional in
human beings. Therefore, those persons who are
devoid of any knowledge are just like animals.
