Vyaalaashrayaapi vikalaapi sakantakaapi.
Vakraapi pankilaabhavaapi duraasadaapi.
Gandhena bandhurapi ketaki sarvajantaa-
reko gunah khalu nihanti samasta doshaan.
Vyaala+ashrya + api. Vyaala = a snake. Aashrya=
shelter. Api = even. Vikalaapi = vikala +api,
Vikala = imperfect. Sakantaka+ api. Sakantaka=
with thorns. Vakra + api. Vakra = bent, curved.
Pankila + bhava+ api. Pankila= slushy. Bhava=
grows, prospers. Durasada+ api, Duraasada =
difficult or dangerous to be approached. Gandhena=
with sweet smell. Bandhuh + api. Bandhuh =
friend. Ketaki = name of a thorny shrub producing
fragrant flowers. Sarvajantaa = well-known. Eko =
only one. Gunah = virtue. Khalu = verily. Nihanti =
kills, destroys. Samast = all. Doshaam = defects.
i.e. It is very well known that the shrub of 'Ketaki'
is a shelter of snakes, is imperfect , is full of thorns,
its shape is curved, grows in slush and it is dangerous
and difficult to approach (for its flowers). But still its
only one virtue of friendship with fragrance ( having
fragrant and beautiful flowers ) destroys all its defects.
(The idea behind this subhashita is that if a thing or a
person has even one very important virtue people do
not mind the defects in them. There is also a saying
that people tolerate even the kicks by a cow while
milking it.)
