आज का सुभाषित / Today's Subhashita.

कारुण्यं  पुण्यानां कृतज्ञता पुरुष  चिह्नानां  |

मायामोहमतीनां कृतघ्नता  नरकपातहेतूनां ||- महासुभाषितसंग्रह(९७०७)

भावार्थ -     प्राणीमात्र के प्रति दया और कृतज्ञता की भावना  तथा  

धार्मिक प्रवृत्ति का होना यह सज्जन व्यक्तियों की निशानी है | इसके 

विपरीत  माया और मोह में लिप्त रहना और कृतघ्नता (परोपकार 

की भावना का अभाव ) निश्चय ही लोगों के नरक में जाने के  कारण 

होते है |

(सनातन धर्म में यह्  प्रतिपादित किया जाता है कि सद्व्यवहार तथा 

अच्छे कार्य करने  से व्यक्ति पुण्य अर्जित करते हैं जिस के फलस्वरूप 

मृत्यु के उपरान्त उन्हें स्वर्ग प्राप्त होता है | इसके विपरीत निषिद्ध कर्म 

करने से व्यक्ति नरक  भोग करता है | इसी भावना को इस सुभाषित में

व्यक्त किया गया है | )

Kaarunyam punyaanaam krutagyataa purusha- chihnaanaam.

Maayaa-moha-mateenaam krutaghnataa narakapaata-hetoonaam.

Kaarunyam = compassion, kindness,   Punyaanaam= virtuous.

Krutagyataa = gratitude, gratefulness,   Purusha = people, man,

Chihnaanaam = characteristic.  Maayaa = fraud.   Moha = ignorance, 

perplexity.    Mateenaam = persons having inclination towards ...

Krutaghnataa = ingratitude.    Narakapaata = falling into the Hell.

Hetoonaam = reasons for.   

i.e.   Compassion towards all living beings and  virtuous way of living, 

are the characteristics of a religious person.     On the other hand

inclination towards fraudulent behaviour, perplexity, and ingratitude

are the reasons of people falling into the Hell.

(According to Sanatan Dharma, if a person leads a pious and virtuous

lifestyle, he earns certain plus points called 'Punya' , which entitle him

a place in the Heaven after his death. On  the other hand if he leads a life 

full of fraud, deceit and ingratitude, he will certainly fall into the Hell.

This Subhgashita deals with this aspect of life.)

आज का सुभाषित / Today's Subhashita.

कारुण्येनात्मनो   तृष्णा  च  परितोषतः          |
उत्थानेन जयेत्तन्द्रीं वितर्कः निश्चयाज्जयेत || -महासुभषितसंग्रह(९७१२)

भावार्थ -    करुणा (दया की भावना) से स्वयं अपने ऊपर , तृष्णा (अत्यधिक
लोभ) के ऊपर  संतोष की भावना के द्वारा , तन्द्रा (आलस्य) के ऊपर जाग्रति
के द्वारा,तथा संदेह (संशय) के ऊपर दृढ निश्चय से विजय प्राप्त करनी चाहिये |

Karunyenaatmano trushnaa cha paritoshatah.
Utthaanena jayettandreem  vitarkah nishchayaajayet.

Kaarunyenenaatmano = kaarunyena + atmano.      Kaarunyen =
by compassion or kindness.     Atmano = you yourself.    Trushna=
greed, excessive desire to possess something.   Cha =  and.
Paritoshatah =gratification on whatever one has.   Utthaanena=
by rising.   Jayettandreem = jayet + tandreem.    Jayet = conquer.
Tandreem = drowsiness.     Vitarkah = doubt,  arguments.
Nishchayaajjayet = nishchayaat + jayet.        Nishchayaat =
by taking a decision, by determination.

i.e.     One should conquer his own self by practicing compassion,
greed  by being satisfied at whatever he possesses,  drowsiness by
always remaining alert, and  indecision by being firm and decisive.

(Anger, greed, laziness and indecision are the four shortcomings which a person 
should not have in him. This Subhashita exhorts that anger should be controlled 
by being compassionate, greed by being satisfied at one's lot, laziness by being 
alert, and indecision by firm resolve.)

आज का सुभाषित / Today's Subhashita.

कारणेनैव  जायन्ते मित्राणि रिपवस्तथा  |
रिपवो येन जायन्ते कारणं तत्परित्यजेत् || -महासुभषितसंग्रह(९७००)

भावार्थ -    अनेक कारणों से ही लोगों में मित्रता और शत्रुता उत्पन्न
होती है | अतः जिन कारणों से शत्रुता उत्पन्न होती है उन कारणों से
प्रयत्नपूर्वक बचना चाहिये |

Kaaranenaiva jaayante mitraani ripavastathaa.
Ripavo yena jaayante kaaranam tatparityajet.

Kaaranaiva = kaananena+ aiva.    Kaaranena = due to some
reason.   Aiva = really.   Jaayante = happen.   Mitraani =friends.
Rioavastatha = ripavah + tathaa.    Ripavah = enemies,   Tatha=
also.     Yena = by means of which.   Kaaranam = reasons.
Tatparityajet= tat + parityajyet.      Tat = that.       Parityajet =
give up, disregard.

i.e.        There are various  reasons for development of friendship
as also enmity between persons.  Therefore, one should give up
or disregard those reasons which cause enmity.

आज का सुभाषित / Today's Subhashita.

कारणेन विना भृत्ये यस्तु कुप्यन्ति पार्थिवः |
स गृह्णाति विषोन्मादं  कृष्णसर्पप्रदंशिता   || - महासुभषितसंग्रह(९६९९)

भावार्थ -    विना किसी मान्य कारण के यदि कोई राजा (या शासक) अपने
नौकरों के ऊपर क्रोधित होता है तो उसकी स्थिति एक काले विषधर सर्प के
द्वारा डसे जाने पर  विष के प्रभाव से उन्मादित व्यक्ति के समान हो जाती
है |
(इस सुभाषित में एक क्रोधित व्यक्ति  की तुलना एक जहरीले सांप द्वारा डसे
गये व्यक्ति से की गयी है  जिस के प्रभाव से उसके प्राण संकट मे पड जाते हैं |)

Kaaranena vinaa bhrutye yastu kuyanti paarthivaah.
sa gruhnaati vishonmaadm krushnasarpapradmshitaa.

Kaaranena = for some reason.   Vinaa = without.   Bhrutye = to a
servant.    Yastu = yah +tu.    Yah = whosoever.   Tu = and, but.
Kupyanti = becomes angry.    Paarthivah = a king or a prince.
Sa = he.    Gruhnaati = takes, acquires   Vishonmaadam = visha +
unmaadah.    Visha= poison.   Unmaadah = intoxication, insanity
Krushna = black.   Sarpa =  a snake.   Pradmshoit =  bittem.

i.e.     If a king ( or a ruler) becomes angry at his servants without
any valid reason. his condition is very precarious like a person bitten
by a very poisonous black snake

(In this Subhashita anger has been compared to a snake bite , which
is very dangerous and may even  be fatal).

आज का सुभाषित /Today's Subhashita.

कारणान्मित्रतां एति कारणा याति शत्रुतां  |
तस्मान्मित्रतां एवात्र योज्यं वैरं न धीमतां. || - महासुभषितसंग्रह(९६९८)

भावार्थ -   किसी कारण से ही लोगों में मित्रता होती है और किसी कारणवश
ही शत्रुता भी हो जाती है |   इसी लिये बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति प्रयत्नपूर्वक मित्रता
ही करते हैं न कि वैर |

kaaraanaanmitrataam eti kaaranaa yaati shatrutaam.
Tasmaanmitrataam evaatra yujyam vairam na dheemataam.

Kaaraanaanmitrataam = kaaranaat+ mitrataam.    Kaaraanaat =
due to some reason.    Mitrataam = friendship.   Eti = arrives.
Yaati =falls into    Shatruta = enmity.    Tasmaanmitrataam =
tasmaat + mitrataam .   Tasmaat = therefore.   Evaatra = eva+
atra.    Eva = really.    Atram = here.     Yojyam = acquire.
Vairm = enmity.   Na = no.    Dheemataam = wise men.

i.e.      There are many reasons for striking friendship between
persons and so also for becoming enemies.   Therefore, wise men
always take due care to foster friendship and not enmity.

आज का सुभाषित /Today's Subhashita.

कामधेनुगुणा विद्या ह्यकाले फलदायिनी |
प्रवासे मातृसदृशी विद्या गुप्तं धनं स्मृतं  || = महासुभषितसंग्रह(९८०२)

भावार्थ -    विद्या पुराणों में वर्णित चमत्कारी कामधेनु गाय के समान
ही गुणवान है और संकट के समय इच्छित फल देने वाली (सहायक) होती
है |  परदेश में  एक माता के समान रक्षा और लालन पालन करती है | इसी
लिये शास्त्रों में कहा गया है कि विद्या एक गुप्त धन है |

Kaamadhenugunaa vidyaa hyakaale phaladaayanee.
Pravaase maatrusadrushee vidyaa guptam dhanam smrutam.

Kaamadhenu = mythical cow mentioned in Hindu Mythology,
which is supposed to satisfy all desires,(Refer to the epic of
'Samudra Manthan in wikipedia for details).  Gunaah = qualities.
Vidya = knowledgem, learning.   Hyakaale = hi = akaale.
Hi = surely.   Akaale = during bad times.   Phaladaayinee =
yielding fruitful results.     Pravaase = while living abroad.
Maatru = mother.   Sadrushee = like a mother.   Guptam =hidden;
Dhanam = wealth.   Smrutam = remembered or declared as.

i.e.               Knowledge (and learning) is like the mythical cow
"Kaamadhenu" which is capable of giving fruitful results  during
bad times.  Knowledge is also benevolent and caring like a mother
while living in foreign lands.  That is why it is said that knowledge
is like  hidden wealth.

आज का सुभाषित / Today's Subhta

कामं  क्रोधं  भयं  लोभं  दम्भं  मोहं  मदं  तथा  |
निद्रां मत्सरमालस्यं नास्तिक्यं च परित्यजेत् ||- महासुभषितसंग्रह(९५३०)

भावार्थ -   कामुकता , क्रोध् , भय , लोभ, दम्भ (घमन्ड ) , मोह, अत्यधिक
निद्रा, मत्सर (ईर्ष्या ) , आलस्य  तथा नास्तिकता (ईश्वर की सत्ता में विश्वास
न करना ) इन सभी दुर्गुणों को प्रयत्नपूर्व  त्याग देना चाहिये |

kaamam krodham bhayam lobham dambham moham madam tathaa.
Nidraam matsarmaalasyam naastikyam cha parityajet.

Kaamam = sensuality.   Krodham = anger.   Bhayam = fear.   Lobham =
greed.    Dambham = hypocrisy.    Moham = infatuation, confusion.
Madam = drunkenness.     Tathaa = as also.     Nidraam = sleep.
Matsarmaalasyam = matsaram + aalasyam.    Matsaram = jealousy,
envy.    Aalasyam = laziness.    Naastikyam = atheism.   Cha = and.
Parityajet = give up.

i.e.   One should assiduously  give up the bad habits of  sensuality,anger,
fearfulness, greed, hypocrisy,infatuation, drunkenness,  excessive sleep,
jealousy, laziness and atheism.
