Today's Subhashita.

अटनेन  महारण्ये  सुपन्था  जायते  शनैः |
वेदाभ्यासान्तथा ज्ञानं शनैः पर्वतलङ्घनं  ||

अर्थ -        एक घने जंगल में विचरण करते समय सदैव सही पथ पर धीरे धीरे चलना चाहिये | इसी प्रकार वेदाभ्यास , ज्ञानार्जन (शिक्षा प्राप्त करना) तथा दुर्गंम  पर्वतों को लांघना. ये सभी कार्य भी धीरे धीरे ही करना
श्रेयस्कर होता है |

Atanena mahaaranye supanthaa jaayate  shanaih.
Vedaabhyaasaantatghaa gyaanam shanaih parvatalanghanam.

Atanena = while wandering.     Mahaaranye = a dense forest.     Supantha = a good track.
Jaayate = happens.     Shanaih =  leisurely        Vedaabhyaasaantathaa - vedaabhyaasaam + tathaa.
Vedaabhyaasa = learning and repeating the sacred text of Vedas, the scriptures of Hindus.
Gyaanam = various disciplines of learning.     Parvat = mountain.    Langhanam =  crossing.


i.e.      While trekking in a dense forest we should follow a proper trail and move slowly.   Similarly, learning and reciting the Vedas, and acquiring knowledge of various disciplines of learning, and crossing/climbing a mountain, it is advisable that all these tasks should also be performed gradually and with patience..

Today's Subhashita.

अज्ञो  न   वितरत्यर्थान्पुनर्दारिद्र्यशङ्कया  |
प्राज्ञोSपि  वितरत्यर्थान्पुनर्दारिद्र्यशङ्कया || 

अर्थ =अज्ञानी व्यक्ति अपनी संपत्ति को  इस आशङ्का के कारण वितरित  नहीं करते है (समाज कल्याण के कार्यों में नहीं लगाते हैं ) कि ऐसा करने से वे कहीं पुनः दरिद्र न हो जायें परन्तु बुद्धिमान् व्यक्ति  इसी आशङ्का के  कारण ही  अपनी संपत्ति वितरित करते रहते हैं | (क्यों कि वे जानते हैं कि धन संपत्ति स्थायी रूप से किसी के पास नहीं रहती है  और उसका सर्वोत्तम उपयोग जनकल्याण के कार्य द्वारा  ही होता है )

Praagyopi vitaratyarthaanpunardaaridryashankayaa.

Agyo = unwise  persons.    Na = not.     Vitaratyarthaanpunardaaridryashankayaa = vitarati +
arthaan +punah + daaridrya + shankayaa.      Vitarati = distributes (gives as charity
Punah = again.       Daaridrya = poverty.     Shankayaa = apprehension, doubt. 
Praagyopi = Praagyo + api .      Praagyo =   wise persons.     Api = also , even.


\i.e.      Unwise persons do not distribute their wealth (as charity for social service) apprehending that by doing so they may again become poor.  However wise persons distribute their wealth for this very reason (because they know that wealth never remains permanently with any body and the wealth is put to best use in philanthropic work.)

Today's Subhashita.

अज्ञेभ्यो ग्रन्थिनः श्रेष्ठो ग्रन्थिभ्यो धारिणो वरः |
धारिभ्यो ज्ञानिनः श्रेष्ठा ज्ञानिभ्यो व्यवसायिनः ||

अर्थ -    अज्ञानी या अशिक्षित व्यक्तियों की तुलना में पढे लिखे (साक्षर ) व्यक्ति श्रेष्ठ होते हैं | साक्षर व्यक्तियों में भी वे व्यक्ति उत्तम होते हैं जिनके पास शिक्षित होने की कोई  उपाधि होती है और ऐसे उपाधि धारकों में भी किसी उच्चस्तरीय विषय के ज्ञाता श्रेष्ठ   होते हैं |  ऐसे विशिष्ट ज्ञानियों में भी वे व्यक्ति श्रेष्ठतम  होते हैं  जिनमें अपने अर्जित ज्ञान का व्यवसायिक सदुपयोग करने की क्षमता होती है  |

Agyebhyo granthinah shreshtho granthibhyo dhaarino varah.
Dhaaribhyo gyaaninah shreshthaa gyaanibhyo vyavasaayinah.

Agyebhyo = ignorant or illiterate persons.     Granthinah = well- read or literate persons.
Shreshtho = better,superior.   Dhaarino = persons having some educational qualifications or Degrees.
Varah = best.       Dhaaribhyo = among the Degree holders.    Gyaaninah =  persons having higher  knowledge.           Gyaanibhyoh = among the highly knowledgeable persons.
Vyavasaayinah =   entrepreneurs. i.e. persons who can put to good use or commercially exploit their higher knowledge

i.e.       Well-read and literate persons are better than illiterate or ignorant persons, and among the literate and well-read persons those who possess some special qualification or a Degree are the best. Among such qualified and knowledgeable persons those who have  specialised knowledge of a higher discipline of learning are superior., Even among such highly specialised persons, those who have entrepreneurship skills to put to good use their learning . are  considered as the best.

Today's Subhashita.

अज्ञानाद्यदि   वा  ज्ञानात्कृत्वं   कर्म   निगर्हितं |
तस्माद्विमुक्तिमन्विच्छन्द्वितीयं न समाचरेत् ||

अर्थ -       यदि अज्ञान वश या जान बूझ कर कोई निषिद्ध या गलत कार्य हो जाय तो उसके  परिणाम से मुक्ति पाने के पश्चात् पुनः दूसरी बार ऐसा कार्य नहीं करना चाहिये  |

Agyaanaadyadi vaa gyaanaatkrutvaa karmam nigarhitam.
Tasmaadvimuktimanvicchandviteeyam na samaacharet.

Agyaanaadyadi = agyaanaat +yadi.      Agyaanaat = due to ignorance.      Yadi = if.
Vaa = or.      Gyaanaatkrutvam =  Gyaanaat +  krutvam.     Gyaanat = knowingly.
Krutvam = done.      Karmam = activity, action.     Nigarhitam = prohibited,reprehensible/
Tasmadvimuktimanvicchandviteeyam = tasmat +vimuktim + anvicchan +dviteeyam.
Tasmaat = therefore, hence.    Vimuktim = riddance, release.    Anviccham = seek.
Dviteeyam =  for the second time.     Na = not.      Samaacharet = perform.

i.e.      If unknowingly or knowingly some prohibited or reprehensible activity is done , then after getting rid of its consequences, such acts must not be done again for the second time.

Today's Subhashita.

अज्ञानप्रभवं हीडं  यद्दु:खमुपलभ्यते  |
लोभप्रभवमग्यानं  वृद्धंभूयः प्रवर्धते ||

अर्थ -       केवल अज्ञान के कारण उत्पन्न  क्रोध  से यदि दुःख प्राप्त होता है  तो लोभ जनित अज्ञान से उत्पन्न क्रोधके कारण वृद्द्धवस्था में दुःख  और भी बढ  जाता है  |

Agyaanapravavam heedam yadduhkhamupalabhyate .
Lobhapravavamagyaanam vruddhabhooyah pravardhate.

Agyaana = ignorance.      Prabhavam = influence, origin.      Heedam =   anger .
Yadduhkaamupalabhyate = yat +duhkham +upalabhyat.      Yat =  that           Duhkham = sorrow, misery.     Upalabhyate = be known, perceived.     Lobhaprabhavamagyaanam = lobha+ prabhavam+agyaanam.       Lobha = greed.        Vruddhabhooyah = vruddha +bhooyah.
Vruddha = aged.      Bhooyah = on becoming.     Pravardhate = increases

i.e.            The anger caused due to ignorance ultimately results in sorrow and miseries to a person,
but  the anger caused by greed and the resultant miseries to a person tend to increase  with the advancement of his age.

Today's Subhashita.

अभ्रच्छाया तृणाग्निश्च  नीचसेवा  पटे  जलं  |
वेश्यारागः  खलप्रेमः  सर्वं   बुदबुदसंनिभं       ||

अर्थ -      एक बादल की छाया. घास के तिनकों में लगी आग , नीच व्यक्ति की सेवा , वस्त्र के ऊपर गिरा हुआ जल, एक वेश्या से प्रेम , एक दुष्ट व्यक्ति से प्रेम, ये सभी एक ही समान पानी में उठे वायु के बुलबुले के समान
 क्षणिक और अस्थायी होते हैं |

Abhracchaaya trunaagnishcha neechasevaa pate jalam.
veshyaaraagah khalapremah sarvam budabudasannibhah.

Abhra =  cloud.      Chaayaa = shade.     Trunaagni = fire in the grass.    Neecha = a mean person.
Sevaa = service.      Pate =  garment.      Jala = water.     Veshyaa = a prostitute.   Raaga = love.
Khala = a wicked  person.        Prema = love.       Sarvam = all.        Budabuda = a bubble.
Sannibham = similar to.

i.e.         The shade of a cloud, fire in a heap of grass,  service of a mean person, water fallen on a garment,  love affair with a prostitute, and affection of a wicked person,  all these are momentary and unstable like the bubbles of air in water.

Today's Subhashita.

अगाधेनापि किं तेन तोयेन लवणाम्बुधेः  |
जानुमात्रं   वरं  वारि तृष्णाच्छेदकरं नृणां ||

अर्थ -     अत्यन्त गहरा होने पर भी समुद्र के खारे जल  से क्या लाभ ?   इस से तो घुटनों की ऊंचाई  तक गहरा शुद्ध जल  (नदी या तालाब का ) ही श्रेयस्कर है क्योंकि वह  मनुष्यों की प्यास तो बुझाता है |

(इस  सुभाषित का निहितार्थ यह है कि केवल महान् होने से ही कोई व्यक्ति समाज में सम्मानित नहीं होता है यदि वह् समाज के लिये उपयोगी नहीं होता है |  एक गहरे समुद्र की तुलना में एक उथली नदी या तालाब की उपयोगिता उसकी लोगों की प्यास बुझाने  की क्षमता के कारण अधिक होती है | )

Agaadhenaapi kim tena toyena lavanaambudheh,
Janumaatram varam vaari trushnaacchedakaram nrunaam.

Agaadhenaapi = agaadhena +api,     Agaadhena = being very deep.    Api =  even.
Kim tena =  so what ?     Toyena = of the water.   Lavanaamudhe = lavana+ ambudhe.
Lavana = salt.     Ambudhar = holder of water.     Lavanaambudha = the ocean, storehouse of salty water.       Jaanumaatram =upto the height of the knee i.e. knee deep.    Varam = preferable.
Vaari = water.     Trushnaacchedakaram =  Trushnaa + chedakaram.     Trushnaa = thirst.
Chedakaram = quencher of.      Nrunaam = people.

i.e.        Of what use is the brackish water of a deep ocean ?   The knee deep water of a river or a lake is always preferable, as it is able to quench the thirst of the people.

(The idea behind this subhashita is that simply being a great person is of no use if he is not helpful  or beneficial to the society at large . In contrast  an ordinary person useful to the society is revered more .This fact has been highlighted by the use of a simile comparing the Ocean with an  an ordinary pond or river.).

Today's Subhashita.

अणिमा  महिमा  चैव  लघिमा  गरिमा  तथा |
प्राप्तिः प्राकाम्यमीशित्वं वशित्वं चाष्ट सिद्धयः ||

अर्थ -   अणिमा , महिमा, लघिमा, गरिमा तथा प्राप्ति प्राकाम्य इशित्व और वशित्व ये सिद्धियां
"अष्टसिद्धि" कहलाती  हैं.|

'सिद्धि' शब्द का तात्पर्य सामान्यतः ऐसी पारलौकिक और आत्मिक शक्तियों से है जो तप और साधना के द्वारा प्राप्त होती हैं | हिन्दु धर्म शास्त्रों में अनेक प्रकार की सिद्धियां वर्णित हैं जिन मे आठ सिद्धियां अधिक प्रसिद्ध है जिन्हें 'अष्टसिद्धि' कहा जाता है और जिन का वर्णन उपर्युक्त श्लोक में किया गया है | इनका विवरण इस प्रकार है :-
1. अणिमा  -  अपने शरीर को एक अणु के समान छोटा कर लेने की क्षमता |.
2. महिमा  -    शरीर का  आकार अत्यन्त  बडा करने की क्षमता |
3. गरिमा   -   शरीर को अत्यन्त भारी  बना देने की क्षमता  |
4. लघिमा  -    शरीर को भार रहित करने की क्षमता  |
5. प्राप्ति   -    बिना रोक टोक के किसी भी स्थान को जाने की क्षमता |
6.  प्राकाम्य - अपनी प्रत्येक इच्छा को पूर्ण करने की क्षमता|
7. इश्त्व-        प्रत्येक वस्तु और प्राणी पर पूर्ण अधिकार की क्षमता|
8, वशित्व  -   प्रत्येक प्राणी को वश में करने की क्षमता |
Animaa Mahimaa chaiva Laghimaa Garimaa tathaa.
Praptih Praakyaamyameeshitvam vashitvam chaashta siddhayah.

(1) Animaa (2)Mahimaa.   Chaiva =and also    (3) Laghimaa  (4) Garimaa.    Tathaa = and.
(5) Praapti.   (6)Praakamya  (7) Eshitva  (8) Vashitva.   Chaashta = cha +ashta.    Cha = and
(these are the) Ashta = eight.    Siddhiyah =  Siddhis.

Note :-   The general meaning of the word 'Siddhi' in Sanskrit is some unusual skill or faculty or capability.  Siddhis are spiritual, paranormal, supernatural magical powers and abilities that are achieved through siritual practice, meditation and Yoga.The eight Siddhis detailed in the above shloka are known as 'ashta siddhi'.These are (i)Anima - reducing one's body even to the size of an atom. (2) Mahimaa - expanding one's body to an infinitely large size.( 3)     Laghima - becoming almost  weightless   (4) Garima - becoming infinitely heavy (5) Praapti - having unrestricted access to all places.  (6) Praakaamya -  realising whatever one desires.   (7) Istva - possessing absolute lordship.

Today's Subhashita.

अर्जितं स्वेन वीर्येण नान्यपाश्रित्य कंचन |
फलशाकमपि  श्रेयो भोक्तुं ह्यकृपणे ग्रहे  ||

अर्थ -     प्रत्येक व्यक्ति को धन संपत्ति अपने स्वयं के प्रयत्न से अर्जित करनी चाहिये न कि अन्य व्यक्तियों के  ऊपर आश्रित रह कर |   इस हेतु यदि एक   कंजूस व्यक्ति के समान अपने ही  घर में शाक सब्जी पर ही जीवन निर्वाह करना पडे तो यही श्रेयस्कर है  |

Arjitam svena veeryena naanyapaashritya kanchanam.
Pjalashaakmapi shreyo bhoktum hyakkrupane grahe.

Arjitam =  earned.    Svena =  self.    Veeryena =  by the strength or efforts.     Naanyapaashritya = na + anyapaashritya.     Na = not.     Anyapashritya = depending  on others.      Kanchana = gold, wealth.
Phalashakamapi = phala +shaakam + api.      Phala = fruits.    Shaakam = vegetables.    Api = even.
Shreyo = preferable, rely on.    Bhoktum = dine, have meals.    Hyakrupane = hi +krupane.
Hi = surely.     Krupane = a miser's      Gruhe = residence.

i.e.     Every person should acquire wealth through his own efforts rather than depending upon others.  To achieve this objective it is preferable even to live as a miser and sustain his family on ordinary vegetables and fruits.

Today's Subhashita.

अजीर्णे   भेषजं वारि  जीर्णे वारि बलप्रदं  |
भोजने चामृतं वारि भोजनान्ते विषापहं  ||

अर्थ -             अजीर्ण  (भोजन सही तरीके  से न पचना) होने पर शुद्ध जल का सेवन  एक औषधि के समान कार्य करता है और पाचन क्रिया ठीक होने की स्थिति मे शक्ति वर्धक होता है |   भोजन के साथ  शुद्ध जल का सेवन अमृत के समान गुणकारी होता है और भोजन करने के बाद जल का सेवन विष प्रतिरोधक के समान कार्य करता है |

Ajeerne bheshajam vaari jeerne vaari balapratam.
Bhojane chaamrutam vaari bhojanaante vishaapaham.

Ajeerna = indigestion.     Bhejasham = medicine.      Vaari = water.      Jeerne = digestion.
Balapradam = giving strength.     Bhojane =  for food.    Chaamrutam = cha+amrutam.
Cha = and.       Amrutam =  nectar of Gods supposed to provide immortality to its user.    Bhojanaante = bhojan + ante.   Ante = finally.     Vishaapaham =   visha + apaham.     Visha = poison. Apaha = antidote,    repellant.       Vishaapaham = an antidote for poison.

i.e.         Pure drinking water acts as a medicine in case of a person suffering from indigestion and in normal course acts as tonic and increases physical strength.   Use of water during a meal is beneficial like  'Amruta', the nectar of Gods, and its use after meal is an antidote for poisoning.

Today's Subhashita.

अजितेन्द्रिय वर्गस्य नाचारेण भवेत्फलं  |
केवलं  देहाखेदाय  दुर्भगस्य   विभूषणं    ||

अर्थ -       अपनी इन्द्रियों को वश में न कर पाने वाले मनुष्यों द्वारा समाज द्वारा निर्धारित सदाचरण  न  करने   के फलस्वरूप  वे   केवल बीमारियों से ग्रस्त हो जाते हैं   और दुर्भाग्य ही  उनका विभूषण हो जाता    है (कभी साथ नहीं छोड्ता है ) |

Ajitendriya vargasya naachaarena bhavetphalam.
Kevalam dehakhedaaya durbhagasya vibhooshanam.

Ajitendriya = having uncontrolled passion    Vargasya = catageory of people.
Naachaaret = na +aacharena.      Na = not.     Aacharena =  established rules of proper conduct.
Bhavetphalam =  bhavet + phalam .      Bhavet = happen.     Phalam = result.
Kevalam = only.    Dehanaashaaya = deha + khedaaya .    Deha= body.   Khedaaya = distress, fatigue. Durbhagasya =  an unfortunate person's           Vibhushanam = decoration,adorning.

i.e.        Due to non observance  of  the socially established  rules  of conduct by persons having uncontrolled passion, results in their sickness and fatigue, and they are adorned by misfortune  (which never leaves them ).

Today' Subhashita.

अजातमृतमूर्खेभ्यो   मृताजातौ   सुतो  वरं  |
यतस्तौ स्वल्पदु:खाय यावज्जीवं जडो दहेत् ||

अर्थ -        भविष्य में जन्म लेने वाले या मृत होने वाले मूर्ख पुत्रों के होने से तो अच्छा तो यही है कि ऐसा पुत्र मृत ही उत्पन्न हो, क्योंकि ऐसी  स्थिति में उसकी मृत्यु का दुःख थोडे ही  समय तक रहता है , अन्यथा एक मूर्ख  पुत्र जब तक जीवित रहेगा तब तक  दुःख  और संताप  ही  देता रहेगा

Ajaatamrutamoorkhebhyo mrutaajaatau     suto varam.
Yatastau svalpaduhkhaaya yavajjevamb jado dahet,

Ajaatmrutamoorkhebhyo =  ajaat +mruta + moorkhebhyo.   Ajaat = unborn. not yet born.
Mruta = dead.     Moorkhebhyo =  stupid  persons, idiots.     Mrutajaatau = still born child.
Suto = son.     Varam = preferable.     Yatastau = yatah + tau.     Yatah = because..
Tau = that.      Svalpa = little.     Dhukhaaya = grief, sorrow, distress.    Yaavajjeevam =
yaavat + jeevam.      Yaavat = so long.     Jeevam = living.     Jadam = idiot, stupid.
Dahet = causes distress, torments.

i.e.      Instead of having foolish and idiotic sons yet to be born or existing sons to die in  future, it is preferable to have a still born son, because in that case his death will cause pain and sorrow for a limited period, whereas an idiotic son will cause distress and torment his  father so long he remains alive.

Today's Subhashita.

अजवच्चर्वणं  कुर्याद्गजवत्स्नानमाचरेत्  |
राजवत्प्रविशेद्ग्रामं    चोरवद्गमनं चरेत्   ||

अर्थ -      भोजन को एक बकरी की तरह्  खूब  चबा कर खाना चाहिये तथा स्नान भी हाथी के समान जल क्रीडा कर के करना चाहिये |   किसी ग्राम या नगर में प्रवेश करना हो तो एक राजा के समान धूमधाम  से प्रवेश करना चाहिये और यदि किसी स्थान को छोड कर जाना हो तो  चुपचाप एक चोर के समान बिना किसी को बताये चला जाना चाहिये

Ajavaccharvanam kuryaadgajavatsnaanamaaccharet.
Raajavatpravishedgraamam coravadgamanam charet.

Ajavaccharvanam =  ajavat + charvanam.      Ajavat = like a goat.    Charvanam = chewing.
Kuryaadgajavatsnaanamaachare = Kuryaat +gajavat + snaanaam + aacharet.    Kuryaat = do.
Gajavat = like an elephant.        Snaanam = bath.           Aacharet = do, perform.
Raajvatpravishedgraamam =  Raajvat +pravishet +graamam.     Raajvat = like a King.
Pravishet = enter into.     Graamam = a village.      Chorvadgamanam = choravat + gamanam.
Choravat = like a thief.     Gamanam = departure,  going away.

i.e.       One should eat food by chewing it properly like a goat and while taking a bath he should do so  by playing with water like an elephant.   While entering a village or a town one should do so with pomp and splendour like a King , but while leaving a place one should do so in a clandestine fashion like a thief without people knowing about his departure.

Today's Subhashita.

अचला कमला  कस्य  कस्य  मित्रं  महीपतिः |
शरीरं च स्थिरं कस्य  कस्य वश्या वराङ्गना  ||

अर्थ -       क्या इस संसार में धन संपत्ति की अधिष्ठात्री महालक्ष्मी किसी  व्यक्ति के पास स्थिर रही है और क्या राजा  (शासक) सदैव किसी का मित्र रहा है ?         शरीर सौष्ठव किस व्यक्ति का स्थिर रहा है और एक अत्यधिक रूपवती  स्त्री  क्या किसी  व्यक्ति की आज्ञाकारिणी रही है ?

( धन संपत्ति की अधिष्ठात्री कमला (लक्ष्मी) को चञ्चला भी कहते हैं क्योंकि वह् सदैव किसी पर कृपा नहीं करती है और जिस प्रकार  किसी को अचानक धनवान बना देती  है उसी  प्रकार कंगाल  भी बना देती  है |  इसी प्रकार मानव शरीर भी नाशवान है | राजाओं  की मित्रता भी उनकी सनक पर निर्भर रहती है | अत्यन्त रूपवती  स्त्रियां अपने रूप के गर्व के कारण आज्ञाकारी नहीं होती हैं  | इस सुभाषित में इसी तथ्य को प्रतिपादित किया गया है | )

Achala  Kamala kasya kasya mitram maheepatih .
Shareeram  cha sthiram kasya kasya vashyaa varangana

Achalaa =  steady, immobile.    Kamala =  Lakshmi,the goddess of wealth. (wealth personified)
Kasya = whose .      Mitram = friend.     Maheepatih = King.     Shareeram = human body.
Cha = and.    Sthiram = stable, permanent.       Vashyaa = obedient and dutiful wife.
Varangana = a beautiful woman

i.e.      In this World has any body enjoyed permanent blessings of Goddess Lakshmi,  and who has enjoyed permanent friendship of a King  ?    Has any body enjoyed a permanently healthy physique and has a  very beautiful woman ever remained obedient and faithful ?

(Lakshmi (another name as Kamala) the Goddess of wealth is termed as 'Chanchala' i.e. very fickle minded , She does not favour a person permanently and again makes him a pauper .  Similarly youth is also perishable , the friendship with kings is dependent on their whims and is never permanent and so also very beautiful women are never docile and submissive.  This Subhashita has dealt with the facts in a questioning way.)

Today'sSubhashita.

अङ्गेन गात्रं नयनेन वक्त्रं  न्यायेन राज्यं  लवणेन  भोज्यं |
धर्मेण हीनं खलु जीवितं च न राजते चन्द्रमसा बिना निशा ||

अर्थ -        अंगो (हाथ  पांव  आदि ) के बिना शरीर ,  नेत्रों के बिना चेहरा, न्याय व्यवस्था के बिना राज्य, नमक के  बिना भोजन,  धर्म  तथा सदाचरण  के बिना मानव जीवन,  निश्चय ही ये सभी कभी भी उसी प्रकार शोभित और सम्मानित  नहीं होते हैं जिस प्रकार चन्द्रमा की ज्योत्स्ना के बिना अंधियारी रात शोभा नहीं  पाती है |

Angena gaatram nayanena vakrtam nyaanena raajyam lavanena bhojyam.
Dharmena heenam khalu jeevitam cha na raajate chandramasaa binaa nishaa.

Angena = by a limb of the body.     Gaatram = body.    Nayanena = by the eyes.
Vaktram = face.     Nyaayena = by the justice.     Raajyam = a kingdom or a Nation.
Lavanenaa = by the salt.        Bhojyam = cooked food.       Dharmena = by religious abstraction, righteousness.       Heenam =  without, deprived of.      Khalu = truly/     Jeevitam = one's life..
Cha = and.    Na = not.      Raajate = embellished, be resplendent.     Chandramasaa = relating
to the Moon.     Bina = without.      Nisha = night.

i.e.    Human body without any limb,  face without the eyes,  a Nation without an effective and powerful  judiciary,  cooked food without any salt,  human life without  righteousness and following the Religion,  are  truly not termed as embellished or resplendent, just like a dark night  without the Moon in the sky.

Today's Subhashita.

अकृतात्मानमासाद्य    राजानमनये     रतं  |
समृद्धानि विनश्यन्ति राष्ट्राणि  नगराणि च ||

अर्थ -      यदि किसी राष्ट्र का राजा  (शासक ) अनुशासन और कर्तव्यबोध से रहित  हो  तथा गलत रीति और नीति से शासन करता है तो ऐसे राष्ट्र और उसके नगरों की समृद्धि नष्ट हो जाती है  |
 
Akrutaatmaanamaasaadya  raajaanamanaye ratam.
Samruddhaani vinashyanti raashtraani nagaraani cha,

Akrutaatmaanamaasaadya =  akrutaatmaanam + aasaadya.     Akrutaatmaanam = one without any conscience and discipline..      Aasaadya = obtainable.         Raajaanam =  Kings (rulers)    
Anaye = bad governance, bad conduct.    Ratam = addicted,involved in.     Samruddhani = prosperity, growth.   Vinashyanti = is destroyed.      Raashtraani =  nations,     Nagaraani = cities.   Cha = and.

i.e.         If the King (ruler) of a Nation is without any conscience  and discipline, and is involved in bad governance and conduct, then the prosperity of that Nation  and its cities is destroyed.

Today's Subhashita.

अकस्मादेब  कुप्यन्ति प्रसीदन्त्यनिमित्ततः |
शीलमेतदसाधूनाम्   अभ्रं  पारिप्लवं  यथा    ||

अर्थ -         अकस्मात् अत्यन्त क्रोधित हो जाना और बिना किसी कारण के प्रसन्न भी  हो जाना, दुष्ट और नीच व्यक्तियों का  यह् स्वभाव  आकाश में छाये हुए बादलों के व्यवहार की तरह्  सदैव अनिश्चित रहता है |

Akasmaadeva kupyanti praseedantyanimittatah.
Sheelametadasaadhoonaam abhram paariplavam yathaa.

Akasmaadeva =  akasmaat +aiva.     Akasmat =  suddenly.     Aiva = already, really.  
Kupyanti = become angry .     Prasedantyanimittatah - praseedanti + animittatah.
Praseedanti = become pleased.     Animittatah = without any reason or ground.
Sheelametadasaadhoonaam = sheelam + etat +asaadhoonaam.     Sheelam = conduct, character.
Etat = this.      Asaadhoonaam =  wicked and unholy persons.      Abhram = a cloud.
Paariplavam = wavering, unsteady.       Yatha = for instance,  like a.

i.e.       The behaviour of mean and wicked persons of  suddenly becoming very angry and also very pleased without any reason is just like the unsteady and unpredictable movement of clouds in the sky.

Today's Subhashita.

अकर्तव्यं न कर्तव्यं प्राणैः कण्ठगतैरपि |
कर्तव्यमेव कर्तव्यं प्राणैः  कण्ठगतैरपि  ||

अर्थ -      जो कार्य निषिद्ध या न करने के योग्य हों उन्हें प्राण कंठगत होने पर भी  (मृत्यु का आसन्न संकट
होने पर भी ) नहीं करना चाहिये |    इस के विपरीत जो कार्य करना अपना कर्तव्य हो उसे  अपने अपने प्राणों की परवाह्  न करते हुए भी अवश्य करना चाहिये |

Akartavyam na kartavyam praanaih kanthagatairapi,
Kartavyameva kartavyam praanaih kanthagatairapi.

Akartavyam = an improper or criminal act, any thing that ought not to be done,   Na = not
Kartavyam =  done as a duty.    Praanaih = breathing.      Kanthagatairapi = kanthagataih + api.
Kanthagata =  reaching the throat.    Praana kanthagat =  about to breath his last breath i,e,. about to die.         Api = even      Kartavyameva  = kartavyam +aiva.     Aiva = really,  already.
(The prefix 'a' before a word gives just the opposite meaning to that word, just like the prefix 'in' or 'un' in English .   So 'akartavya' is just the opposite of 'kartavta' .

i.e.       One should not do improper or criminal acts  even if he faces a threat to his life. On the other hand one should perform his duty even at the cost of his life.

Today's Subhashita.

अनसूयार्जवं  शौचं  संतोषः  प्रियवादिता   |
दमः सत्यमनायासो न भवन्ति दुरात्मनां ||

अर्थ -     किसी प्रकार की ईर्ष्या का न होना, ईमानदारी  ,शौच (स्वच्छता तथा सरल स्वभाव ),  संतोष, प्रिय वादिता , अपनी चित्त वृत्तियों को वश में रखना तथा सत्यवादिता, ये  सभी गुण  दुष्ट तथा विकृत मानसिकता वाले व्यक्तियों में  आसानी से  नहीं पाये जाते हैं |

Anasooyaarjavam shaucham santoshah priyavaaditaa.
Damah satyamanaayaaso na bhavanti duraatmanaam.

Anasooyaarjavam = Anuaooya +aarjavam.      Anasooya = not being envious.
Aarjava = honesty.      Shauch = cleanliness, purity of mind.     Santosha = satisfaction.
Priyavaaditaa = speaking kindly and softly.    Damah = self control.    Satyamanaayaso =
Satyam + anaayaaso.      Satyam =truthfulness.      Anaayaso = easily, without any exertion.
Na = not.    Bhavanti = happens, becomes.     Duraatmanaam = wicked and evil minded persons.

i.e.        Not being envious,  honesty,  cleanliness and purity of mind,  satisfaction,  soft spoken,  having self control, and truthfulness, all these virtues are not easily found in wicked and evil minded persons.

Today's Subhashita.

अनलः शीतनाशाय  विषनाशाय  गारुणं |
विवेको दुःख नाशाय सर्वनाशाय दुर्मतिः ||

अर्थ -       आग तापने से  ठंड  दूर हो जाती है तथा 'गारुड् ' मन्त्र के जाप से  विष का दुष्प्रभाव  नष्ट हो जाता है |
विवेकपूर्ण आचरण से दुःखों का नाश हो जाता है और यदि कोई  व्यक्ति दुर्मति  (गलत विचार  और  आचरण)
से ग्रस्त हो तो उसका सर्वनाश हो जाता है |

Analah sheetanaashaaya vishanaashaaya gaarudam.
Viveko duhkha naashaaya sarvanaashaaya durmatih.

Analah = fire.     Sheetanaashaaya = sheeta + naashaaya.     Sheeta - cold.      Naashaaya =for driving away, destroying, removing.       Vishanaashaaya = Visha + naashaaya.      Visha = poison.
Gaarudam =  a 'Mantra' (a sacred text or prayer which has the power of saving the life of a person who has been poisoned .        Viveko =  wisdom, prudence.      Duhkh = sorrow, misery, suffering.     Sarvanaashaaya =  annihilation (destruction of every thing).  Durmatih =wrong notions, bad perception.

i.e.      A burning fire wards off  a spell of severe cold and chanting of 'Gaaruda mantra' destroys the ill effects of a poison .  Wisdom and prudent behaviour destroys all miseries and suffering,  and if a person has wrong notions and bad behaviour then it results in his annihilation .

Today's Subhashita.

अनर्घ्यमपि   माणिक्यं   हेमाश्रयमपेक्षते |
अनाश्रया न शोभन्ते पण्डिता:वनिता लताः ||

अर्थ -     जैसे अमूल्य होने पर भी एक माणिक्य को अपनी वास्तविक शोभा को प्राप्त करने के  स्वर्ण के आश्रय की आवश्यकता होती है , उसी तरह्  विद्वान व्यक्ति, स्त्रियां  तथा लतायें  भी बिना किसी प्रकार के आश्रय के शोभित नहीं होती हैं.|

( एक माणिक्य तभी शोभित होता है जब् वह् किसी स्वर्ण आभूषण  में प्रयुक्त होता है | इसी प्रकार विद्वानों को  राज्याश्राय ,स्त्रियों को शक्तिशाली व्यक्तियों के संरक्षण  तथा  लताओं  को अपनी वृद्धि के लिये किसी वृक्ष या  सहारे की आवश्यकता होती  है | )

Anarghyamapi maanikyam hemaashrayamapekshate.
Anaashrayaa na shobhante panditaa vanita lataah .

Anarghyamapi = anarghyam +api.      Anarghyam = priceless, invaluable.    Api = even.
Maanikyam =  ruby (a precious stone).     Hemaashrayamapekshate = Hema +aashrayam + apekshate.
Hema = gold.     Aashrayam = shelter.      Apekshate =  requires, expects.    Anaashrayaa = without any protection and support.     Na = not.     Shobhante =  embellished, adorned       Panditaah = scholars ,learned persons..       Vanitaa = women.       Lataah = a creeper plant .

i.e.        Inspite of being priceless a ruby requires the shelter and support of  gold , and similarly scholars , women and creeper plants too are not adorned or embellished without any proper support..

( A ruby acquires its full glory only after being studded in a gold ornament, and similarly scholars are adorned after they get recognition from the State or society,  women through protection by  powerful persons, and a creeper plant when it climbs  a tree or any other support.)

Today's Subhashita.

अनभ्यासैर्हता विद्या नित्यहासैर्हता  स्त्रियः |
कुबीजेन  हतं  क्षेत्रं   भृत्यदोषैर्हता   नृपाः     ||

अर्थ -     निरन्तर अभ्यास न करने से विद्या का ह्रास हो जाताहै  (उस पर व्यक्ति का पूर्ण अधिकार नहीं रहता है ) और नित्य निरर्थक हंसी मजाक करने से  स्त्रियों को हानि पहुंचती है,  अगर बीज अच्छा न हो तो खेत में फसल नष्ट हो जाती है, और राजा (शासकों ) का नाश उसके सेवकों (अधीनस्थ  अधिकारियों ) के दोषपूर्ण व्यवहार के कारण  हो जाता है

Anabhyaasairhat =  Anabhyaaseh + hataa.     Anabhyaas =not regularly recapitulating and updating any discipline of learning.     Hataa = killed, destroyed.    Vidyaa = various disciplines of learning.
Nityahaasairhataa = nitya +haasaih+ hataa.     Nitya = every day.    Haasa = laughter, making fun.
Striyah = women.     Kubeejena =  bad seeds.  ('ku' is a prefix like 'mal' in English,which means bad),
Kshetram = agricultural farm.     Bhrutyadoshairhataa = Bhrutya+doshaih +hataa.    Bhrutya = servants, subordinate officials)   Doshaih = various shortcomings and defects.   Nrupaah = kings, rulers.

i.e.         Command over any discipline of learning is lost if it is not regularly recapitulated and practised,   indulging daily  in unnecessary  ridicule and laughter is harmful to the ladies,  bad seeds sown in an agricultural farm results in loss of the crop,  and  ignoring the defects and shortcomings of attendants and subordinate officials  by the king (or rulers) results in  loss of the kingdom or even the death of  the king.

Today's Subhashita

अनभ्यासेन  विद्यायां असंसर्गेण धीमतां |
अनिग्रहेण चाक्षाणां जायते व्यसनं नृणां   ||

अर्थ -      व्यक्तियों के द्वारा नियमित अभ्यास न करने से विभिन्न विद्याओं  के उपयोग् करने की क्षमता में ह्रास ,  विद्वज्जनो से निरन्तर संपर्क न रखने से विवेकहीनता , अधैर्य तथा अनुशासित न होने से जुआ खेलने पर   हानि, ये सभी दुष्परिणाम  भुगतने पडते हैं |

(एक अन्य सुभाषित मे भी कहा गया है कि - 'अनभ्यासे विषं शास्त्रं' -  अर्थात निरन्तर अभ्यास न करने से शास्त्र विष के समान हो जाता है |)

Anabhyaase = for want of practice or skill.     Vidyaayaam = different fields knowledge.
Asansargena = not maintaining contact, disassociation with.    Dheemataam = intelligence, wisdom.
Anigrahena =  being unrestrained.   Chaakshanam = cha +akshanam.     Cha = and.    Akshanam =
the game of dice.      Jaayate =becomes, happens.     Vyasanam = bad habits, misfortune , evil results.  Nrunaam = people..

i.e.           Absence of regular practice and recapitulation results in loss of  command over various disciplines of learning ,  not being in the company of noble persons results in loss of wisdom, unrestrained behaviour  and impatience results in losing a game of dice by the people.

(There is another subhashita on this theme which says -"anabhyase visham shaastram' i.e. if not regularly practised the 'Shastra' (a discipline of learning say  Music, Medicine etc.) become like a poison.)

Today's Subhashita.


अधीरः कर्कशः स्तब्धः कुचैलः स्वयमागतः  |
एते पञ्च न पूज्यन्ते  वृहस्पतिसमा  यदि    ||

अर्थ -              धैर्य हीन, कर्कश (कटु वचन कहने वाला) ,अपने दुर्व्यवहार्  से स्तब्ध कर देने वाला, फटे  और गन्दे  वस्त्र पहने  हुए , तथा घुसपैंठिया  (बिना  बुलाये ही  जबर्दस्ती प्रवेश करने वाला ), ये पांच तरह के व्यक्ति चाहे देवगुरु वृहस्पति के समान ही  क्यों न हों , आदरणीय और पूजनीय नहीं हैं.|

Adhirah = impatient, nervous.      Karkashh + rude, foul mouthed.       Stabdhah = arrogant,immobile.
Kuchailah =  badly clothed.     Svayamaagatah =  an intruder, an unwanted person who has forced his entry.     Ete = these.    Pancha = five.    Na = not.     Poojyante = honoured, revered
Vruhaspatisamaa = Vruhaspati +samaa.     Vruhaspati = the head priest and teacher of Gods.
Sama = equal to, equivalent to.      Yadi = even if,  suppose.

i.e.      An impatient and nervous person, a rude and foul mouthed person, an arrogant person, a badly clothed person, and an unwanted intruder, these five types of persons are not to be revered, even if they may be  equal to  Vruhaspati, the head priest and teacher of Gods.

Today's Subhashita.

अधमाः  धनमिच्छन्ति धनमानो च मध्यमाः |
उत्तमाः मानमिच्छन्ति मानो हि महतां  धनं ||

अर्थ -        निम्नतं श्रेणी के व्यक्ति केवल् धन की ही इच्छा करते है , तथा मध्यम श्रेणी के व्यक्ति धन और
सम्मान दोनों की इच्छा करते हैं |  परन्तु सर्वोत्तम श्रेणी के व्यक्ति केवल आदर और सम्मान की ही इच्छा करते
हैं क्योंकि उनकी दृष्टि में समाज में सम्मानित होना  ही सबसे बडी दौलत है |

Adhamaah dhanamicchanti dhanamaano cha madhyamaah.
Uttamaah maanamicchanti maano hi mahataam dhanam.

Adhamaah = people of lowest category.    Dhanamicchanti = dhanam+icchanti.    Dhanam = wealth.
Icchanti + desire, crave.      Dhanamaano = dhana+maano.      Maano = respect., recognition    
Cha = and.       Madhyamaah = persons of  middle category.     Uttamaah = persons of best quality.
Maanamicchanti =  crave for respect and recognition.    Hi = surely.    Mahataam = best.

i.e.      Persons of lowest category crave only for wealth, whereas those in the middle category crave both for wealth and respect .   However, persons of highest calibre crave only for respect and recognition in the society, because for them  such recognition is the best form of wealth.

Today's Subhashita.

किं तया  क्रियते लक्ष्म्या या वधूरिव केवलम्  |
या न वेश्येव सामान्या पथिकैरपि भुज्यते   ||

अर्थ -       उस धन संपत्ति का क्या किया जाय जो कि एक  दुल्हन  के समान केवल संरक्षित रहती है न कि एक साधारण वेश्या के समान जो जन सामान्य को उपलब्ध रहती है और जिसके सान्निध्य का सुख यायावर पथिक भी उठा सकते हैं |

( प्रकारान्त से इस सुभाषित में इस तथ्य को प्रतिपादित किया गया है कि धन संपत्ति जो  केवल संग्रह हेतु होती है उस से तो वह् संपत्ति अधिक श्रेयस्कर है जो एक वेश्या के समान जन सामान्य  के काम आती है |
सचित  धन की तुलना एक वधू से की गयी है और प्रवाह्मान धन की तुलना एक वेश्या से की गयी है.)

Kim tayaa kriyate lakshmyaa yaa vadhooriva kevalam.
Yaa na veshyeva saamaanyaa pathkairapi  bhujyate.

Kim = what.     Tayaa = by her.     Kriyate = does.     Lakshmyaa = Wealth.     Yaa = who.
Vadhooriva = vadhooh +iva.      Vadhooh = a bride.       Iva = like a.     Kevalam = only.
Na = not.      Veshyeva = veshyaa + iva.      Veshyaa = a prostitute.   Saamaanya =   ordinary.
Pathikairapi = pathikaih + api .      Pathikaih = travellers, wanderers.   bhujyate = to be enjoyed.

i.e.       Of what use is the wealth which stays protected  only in a household like a bride and not like an ordinary prostitute who is available to all and sundry and even stray travellers  can enjoy her hospitality.

( Indirectly this Subhashita asserts that the wealth which is just stored is of no use and the wealth which circulates among the masses is beneficial to the society.  The stored wealth is alluded to a bride and the wealth  incirculation to an ordinary  prostitute.)

Today's Subhashita.

एकेन तिष्ठताSधस्तादन्येनोपरितिष्ठता  |
दातृयाचकयोर्भेदः  कराभ्यामेव  सूचितः    ||

अर्थ -      कौन दाता है और कौन याचक है यह् उन  दोनों व्यक्तियों के हाथों की स्थिति को देख  कर  ही ज्ञात हो जाता है |   एक ( याचक) के हाथ नीचे स्थित होते है और दूसरे (दाता) के हाथ उसके ऊपर होते हैं |

Ekena tishthataadhastaadanyenoparitistitaa.
Daatruyachakayorbhedah karabhyaameva soochitah.

Ekena =  One.    Tishthata+aadhast +anyen +upari +tishthtaa.     Tishtata = stays.
Adhast a= below.     Anyena = the other .    Upari - above,     Daatru +yachakayoh + bhedah.
Datru = one who gives.    Yachakayoh = beggars.     Bhedah = difference.   Karaabhyaam +aiva.
Karaabhyaam = hands.     iva = nearly, exactly.        Soochitah = indicated.

i.e.        Who is the giver and who is the beggar (petitioner) can be indicated by the position of their hands. The beggar's hands are always below the hands  of the giver.

Today's Subhashita.

अर्थानजरामरवत्कामानौषदवदाचरेद्धीमान्  |
तृषितवत्पिवेद्विद्यां   मुमूर्षुवदाचरेद्धर्मम्   ||

अर्थ -       ओ बुद्धिमान् मनुष्यो  !      धनार्जन करते समय ऐसा व्यवहार करो कि  तुम अजर और अमर हो ,  कामवासना को इस प्रकार नियन्त्रित करो जैसे कि औषधि का सेवन कर रहे हो , विद्या को ऐसे ग्रहण करो जैसे कि प्यासा व्यक्ति जल पीता है , और धर्म का पालन इस भावना से  करो कि मृत्यु  शीघ्र ही (कभी भी) हो सकती है |

( इस सुभाषित में कवि का रचना कौशल दृष्टव्य है |  स्वर और व्यञ्जन सन्धियों के कुशल प्रयोग से श्लोक की प्रथम पंक्ति में विभिन्न शब्द एक दूसरे से जुडे हुए हैं और दूसरी पंक्ति में भी वही  कौशल प्रदर्शित है |)

Arthaan+ajara+amara _vat+kaaman+aushadha +vat+aacharet+dheemaan.
Trushitvat+pivet+vidyaam mumoorshuvat+aacharet+ dharmam.

Arthaan = wealth      Ajara= ever young,     Amar = immortal, never dying.    Vat = like ( implies likeness or resemblance.     Kaamaan = sexual desire.    Aushadhavad = like a medicine.    Aacharet = indulge in, perform.     Dheemaan = wise and knowledgeable men.    Trushitvat = like a thirsty person.
Pivet = drink.     Vidyaam = knowledge, learning.     Mumoorshuvat = like a person wishing or being about to die .

i.e.    O wise men !   while acquiring wealth behave as if you are ever young and immortal,  use your sexual urge in a controlled way like a medicine,  seek knowledge and learning like a thirsty person drinking water, and  perform your religious duties as if you are about to die.

(  This Subhashita is a fine example of the skill of its author in the use of 'Sandhi" (adjoining words with each other, which is a speciality of Sanskrit Language).  Nine words have been combined to make one stanza. In the second one also this craftsmanship is visible .)

Today's Subhashita.

ज्यायांसमपि  शीलेन विहीनं  नैव पूजयेत्  |
अपि शूद्रं  च  धर्मज्ञं  सद्वृत्तमभिपूजयेत  ||

अर्थ -      यदि  समाज के उच्च वर्गों का कोई वरिष्ठ व्यक्ति चरित्र तथा सद्व्यवहार् से विहीन हो तो वह् पूजनीय  (आदर और सम्मान के योग्य) नहीं है परन्तु यदि कोई  शूद्र (समाज के निम्नतम वर्ग का सदस्य) धर्मज्ञ तथा चरित्रवान हो तो ऐसा व्यक्ति अवश्य ही पूजनीय है  |

(उपर्युक्त सुभाषित से यह् तथ्य प्रकट होता है कि प्राचीन भारत में शूद्र हेय दृष्टि से नहीं देखे जाते थे और वे भी सम्मानित नागरिक माने जाते थे |   उनके प्रति भेदभाव और अस्पृश्यता की भावना बाद में विकसित हुई थी )

Jyaayaamsamapi sheelena viheenam naiva poojayet.
Api shoodram cha dharmagyam sadvruttamabhi poojayet.

Jyaayaamsam =  elderly persons.    Api - even      Sheelena = character, integrity.    Viheena = without, .    Naiva = not, never.     Poojayet = respected, honoured, worshipped.      Api = even ( to express emphasis)  Shoodram = a man of lowest service class.   ( In ancient India the society was divided into four categories of people namely (i) Brahmins serving as teachers and priests  (ii) Kshatriyas, the warrior and ruling class (iii) Vaishyas, the traders and business class and (iv) shoodras, working as artisans, labourers and menial servants.)        Cha = and      Dharmagyam  = knowing the law and religion i.e. what is right  or wrong.
Sadvruttamabhipoojayet = sadvruttam  +abhipoojayet.     Sadvruttam = having good conduct.
Abhipoojayet =  honoured, respected.

i.e.       If a senior and aged person from higher echelons of society is not having good character and integrity, he should not be respected and honoured .  But if a  Shoodra (person from the lowest category of society) is well versed in law and religion and is having good character , he should definitely be  respected and honoured .

(Untouchability and ill treatment to people of lowest strata of society (now termed as Dalits  by the three upper castes is still a bane of Indian Society.  But this Subhashita asserts that this was not so in ancient India and they were given due respect.   Ill treatment to them was a later development,)
