(In Sanskrit literature there are many Subhashitas ,which exhort
people to emulate some special characteristics of  members of the
animal world.  This  Subhashita is one among such subhashitas.)

Today's Subhashita.

(The above Subhashita is a satire criticizing people who worship
the Gods only when they are distressed, appreciate penance only
when they are sick , appreciate charity when they are poor, and
women become virtuous and devoted to their husbands when
they become aged.)

hoard wealth and use it for philanthropic purposes .)

Today's Subhashita.

times more superior and respectable than the father.

(Through this Subhashita the important role of a mother in upbringing
the child and in educating him, has been highlighted by terming it
thousand times better than other means.  This is true particularly in
the case of other living beings, where the mother is mainly responsible
for upbringing and training the offspring ).

Thus, all these six virtues are like  my close relatives.

the  real  knowledge  which  helps them in  attaining  'Moksha'
( release from the cycle or birth and death).  Besides this there
are other forms of knowledge based on various handicrafts, but
while practising them one often gets pain and sorrow.

(According to Sanatan Dharm ( religion of Hindus) the main aim
should be to attain 'Moksha; i.e. release from the cycle of birth and
death, and all human activities should be based on achieving it.
In Bhagvad Geetaa to achieve this 'Nishkaam Karma Yoga'  i.e.
doing all activities without any attachment, has been prescribed.
This Subhashita deals with this aspect of Life.)

Lubdhamanartham gruheeyaat kruddhamanjalikarmanaa.

i.e.      A greedy person can be convinced by offering him money,
and an angry person can be subdued by courteously saluting him
with folded hands.         A foolish person should be convinced by
making him feel that his wish will  be fulfilled, and a learned person
can be convinced only by telling the truth.

Today's Subhashita.

Nishnaatopi cha vedaante vairaagyam naiti durjanah
Chiram jalanidhau magno mainaak iva maardavam.

Nishnatpi  = nishnaato + api.     Nishnato = expert , well versed.

Jalanidhau = the Ocean.     Magno = immersed in, submerged.
Mainaaka = the name of a mountain which is submerged in the
ocean.    Iva = like (for comparison).   Maardavam = leniency.

i.e.      Even if a wicked person may be well versed in the Vedas,
he still remains aloof from 'Vairaagya' (renouncing  the desire
for worldly objects and worshipping the  God in the latter part of
life), just like the Mount Mainaak, which, although exists amid
the Ocean since long ago, but remains unaffected by the Ocean.

( By the use of the simile of the Ocean for Vedas and of the Meru
mountain for a wicked person, the Subhashita emphasizes that
for wicked persons the higher learning is of no use and the do not
change their way of living. )

nectar of Gods.  These are enjoying the witty, eloquent and  inspiring quotes
composed by noble and virtuous persons,  and the company of such noble
persons.

Dharmah = righteousness,  religious austerity.

 i.e.     Only that wealth  is the real wealth which is in your own
hands (under control) and only that person is a real friend  who
constantly supports  you even  in adversity.   Beauty of a person
is real only when he is also virtuous and  a science or a discipline
of learning is  real only when it. propagates religious austerity and
righteousness.

Asadbhih shapathenoktam jale likhitamaksharam.
sadbhistu leelayaa proktam shilaalikhitamaksharam.

Shilaalikhitmaksharam=  shila + likhitam + aksharam.      Shilaa =
a slab of stone.      Likhitam = written.   Aksharam = words.

i.e.      The commitments made by persons of evil temperament even
under oath are just like words written on the surface of water ( which
disappear immediately) and are not honoured by them.    On the other
hand commitments made by upright and truthful persons even casually
are like the words engraved on a slab of stone (permanent) and are duly
honoured by them.

Today's Subhash.

Adharmenaithate  poorvam tato bhadraani pashyati
Tatah sapatraan jayati  samoolastu vinashyati.

Adharmenaithate = adharmena + ethate.       Adharmena =
by leading an immoral lifestyle.    Ethate = becomes dry
wood.   Poorvam =  before, initially.   Tato = afterwards.
Bhadraani = prosperity.    Pashyati = sees,  enjoys.   Tatah =
due to that.    Sapatraan = along with leaves.    Jayati = be
victorious or successful.    Samoolastu = samoolah + tu.
Samoolah =  along with the roots, original capital . Tu = but,  .
Vinashyati = annihilated, gets destroyed.

i.e.    By adopting unethical and unfair means,  initially a
person quickly becomes prosperous and happy just like a
growing  tree full of leaves and fruits.  But later on, just as
a tree dries up and gets destroyed along with its roots,in the
same manner not only the ill -gotten wealth  gets destroyed
even the original capital of that person also gets destroyed.

(There are numerous examples of people becoming very rich
and victorious by adopting unfair means. But their downfall is
also very quick and they lose even their original capital . This
fact has been highlighted beautifully in this Subhashita.

i.e.   A person who is not thrilled on being honoured  and does not
become angry on being insulted. and if  per  chance  becomes angry
does not use harsh and abusive language, is truly the best among
noble and virtuous persons.

Yaavat bhriyate jatharam taavat satvam hi dehinnaam.
Adhikam yobhimanyeta sa steno dandamarhati.

Yaavat = until.       Bhriyate =  supports.    Jatharam = stmach.
Taavat = so long.    Satvam =  alive, living.           Hi = surely
Dehinaam = living beings.    Adhikam = more,   Yobhimanyeta=
Yo+ abhimanyeta.      Yo = whosever.      Abhimanyeta = desires.
Sa = he.    Steno = a thief.    Dandamarhati = dandam +arhati.
Dandam = punishment.    Arhati =  deserves.

i.e.    All living beings remain alive until such time their stomach
sustains them.  So, if they crave for more than their requirements
they deserve to be punished as a thief.

(This Subhashita condemns the tendency among people to amass
wealth beyond their requirements and thereby depriving others
of their requirements and suggests that such persons deserve
to be punished as a thief.)

Svabhaavam na jahaatyeva  saadhuraapadatopi san.
Karpoorah paavakasprushth saurabham labhatetaraam.

Svabhaavam = inherent nature.   Na = not.   Jahaatyeva = jahaati+
eva.     Jahaatri = lose.   aadhuraapadratopi = saadhuh+ aapadato +
api,     Sadhu = noble persons.    Apadato =  a disaster.. calamity.

get.     Taraam = word added to adverbs to intensify their meaning.

i.e.     Noble persons do not shed their inherent good nature even
while facing a calamity just like the Camphor, which on coming into
contact with fire and while burning  emits even more fragrance.

Khadyota = A firefly which emits a fluorescent light in
the darkness      Dyotate = shines.   Taavadyavannodayate =
taavat + na +udayate.      Taavat = so long as.       Yaavat =
until.   Na = not.   Udayate = rises ( in the sky).    Shashi =
the Moon.      Udite = by the rising of          Tu =  but.
Sahasraansau= the Sun.    Chandrama =  the Moon.

i.e.    A firefly 'glows in the darkness until such time the Moon
does not rise in the sky.  But when the Sun rises neither the
glowing firefly nor the Moon exhibit their brightness.

( The idea behind this Subhashita is that less competent persons
get recognition only until such time   more competent persons
are not there and they lose their sheen on the arrival of more
competent persons.)
