even on the face of imminent threat to their life,  just like a Sandal
wood tree, which, while being cut with an axe, fills the blade of the
axe with its sweet fragrance.

(In this Subhashita t he use of a beautiful simile of a Sandalwood tree
for highlighting the philanthropic qualities in noble persons is
noteworthy.)

Chalaa lakshmeeshchalaa praanaashchalam jeevit  yauvanam.
Chgalaachalo cha smsaare dharma ekohi nishchalah.

Chalaa = unsteady, moving.     Lakshmeeshchalaa = Lakshmeeh +

Today's Subhashita.

Khalvaato divaseshvarasya kiranaih samtaapitau mastake.

head.      Praayo =  mostly, perhaps.   Gacchati = goes.    Yatra =
where.    Bhaaagyarahistatraapadaa =  Bhaagyarahitah + tatra +
aapadaa.    Bhaagyarahitah = unfortunate, miserable.   Tatra = there.
Aapadaa = calamity, misfortune.    Bhaajanam = receptacle of.

i.e.       A bald headed person on being scorched by the rays of the
Sun, wishing to go to a cool place, through the quirk of fate sat below
a Coconut tree.  There a large coconut shell dropped from the top of
the tree and hit his head with a loud sound.  This implies that where
ever unfortunate persons go  misfortune follows them.

(In this Subhashita  a comic situation has been described to highlight
the irony of fate in the lives of people, over which they have no control.)

Today's Subhashita.

Bhaagyavantam prasooyethaa  maa shooram  maa cha panditam.
Soorashcha krutavidyashcha  vane  seedanti Paandavaah.

i.e.        People should beget lucky children rather than brave and
scholarly children, because such children have to suffer a lot in their
life, e.g. the five sons of king Pandu, who were brave and learned had
to suffer by wandering in forests after losing their kingdom.

(In this Subhashita the author has sarcastically highlighted the fact that,
 persons of ordinary intelligence but very lucky, enjoy a luxurious life.
whereas highly learned and very brave persons generally languish in
miseries and poverty.)

Today's Subhashita..

Gajabhujangyorapi  bandhanam shashidivaakarayorgrahapeedanam.

men,  the Moon and the Sun being tortured by other planets (Dragon's Head
and Dragon's Tail ), and wise and learned persons living in utter poverty, I am
of the opinion that the Destiny is the most powerful.

Today's Subhashita.

Arakshitam tishthati daivarakshitam
surakshitam dasivahatam vinashyati.
Jeevatyanaathopi vanepirakshitah
krutaprayatnopi grahe vinashyati.

prayatno +api.     Kruta = doing.    Prayatna = effort.
Gruhe =  home,  residence.

i.e.   Unprotected persons remain protected if the destiny is in
their favour, but if it is against them they get killed in spite of
having elaborate protection.   An orphan remains alive even in a
dense forest, whereas a person dies in his home even after making
special efforts for his protection.

(There is a proverb in Hindi echoing the sentiments of the above
Subhashita , which says that vegetation totally dependent on Lord
Ram thrives  inside a dense forest even totally uncared for.)

Today's Subhashita.

Pibanti + drink  up.      Madhupadmeshu = Madhu +padmeshu,

i.e.     Honey bees feed upon the nectar of lotus flowers and are
covered with the pollen of Saffron flowers, but woe betide the
Destiny, beautiful Swans have to remain content by eating the
moss grown under the water.

(The idea behind this Subhashita is that people get whatever is
destined for them irrespective of their ability and status.)

Today's Subhashita.

form of happiness is equal to the peace of mind.   Similarly,
nothing in this world is brighter than the Sun in the sky, and
no form of wealth is equal to the knowledge and learning one
may have acquired.

pupils.  If God Shiva becomes angry a Guru is there to protect from
his wrath, but if a Guru himself becomes angry, there is nobody to
protect from his wrath.

supporting action is not at all appreciated.

person who has full control over his sensory organs and emotions is a
real gentleman .

i.e.     The root cause of enjoying freedom is having power and efficiency,
doing hard labour with efficiency is behind prosperity everywhere.
Independence and self rule is possible only by having an efficient and
impartial judiciary, and unity and close association among people of a
country is the root cause of it becoming a super power.

(In another Subhashita it is said that -'Sanghau shaktih kalauyuge'  i.e.
in Kaliyuga (the present period ) only the unity among the people of a
country is its real Power.)

only defects and shortcomings and leave behind all virtues, like a
filter or a sieve.

Today's Subhashita.

the  opportunity to listening to the discussions of learned

Today's Subhashita.

Digvaasasaam gatavreeedam  jatilam  dhoolidhoosaram.
Punyaadhikaa  hi  pashyanti  Gangaadharamivaatmajam.

Digvasasam = a naked mendicant.    Gatavreedam = not  having the
feeling of any shame.    Jatilam = an ascetic.     Dhoolidhoosaram =
covered with dust.     Punyaadhiaa =   Ounya +adhikaa.      Punya =
Virtues, religious merit.     Adhikaa = too much.    Hi = surely.
Pashyanti = see.     Gangaadharamivaatmajam = Gangaadhara +
iva + aatmajam.      Gangaadhara = God Shiva.    Iva = like
Aatmajam =  Son.

i.e.      Only those persons who have earned "Punya" get the privilege of
observing  the childish pranks of their young son, who is naked, having  no
feelings of shame, like an ascetic and covered with dust just like the Lord
Shiva,.
.
("Punya" is a concept of Hindu Religion, according to which a person
earns certain plus points through observance of the tenets of Religion,
which result in his being placed in advantageous position in his next
birth cycle (or even during his lifetime as well). In this Subhashita an
innocent child has been compared to Lord Shiva and only very fortunate
persons are privileged to enjoy the childish pranks of their own son.)
