Na  annodaka-samam daanam na tithi-dvaadashee-samaa.

day equal to the 12th day of the lunar month.       Likewise,  no
'Mantra' is equal to  the 'Gayatri Mantra' ,and no deity is equal in
status to  one's own mother.

Today's Subhashita.

Anubhyashcha mahadbhyashcha shaastrebhyo kushalo narah.
Sarvatah saaramaadaddyaat  pushpebhyah iva shatpadah.

Anubhyashcha = anubhyah + cha.    Anubhyah = minute particles
Cha = and.   Mahadbhyashcha = Mahadbhyah + cha.   Mahadbhyah
=  great.    Shastrebhyo =  treatises of verious disciplines of learning

all sides,   Saaramaada= saaram + aadaddyaat.    Saaram = essence,

shatpadah =  honey bees .

i.e.     For acquiring knowledge in various disciplines of learning, a
wise person should be very choosy like the honey bees who roam
every where among flowers and collect only pollen and nectar ,the
essence of the flowers.

(The scope of learning is so vast that to be an expert on any subject
a person has to be very  choosy and hard working. This apect has
been highlighted beautifully by the use of the Simile of honey bees
collecting only pollen and nectar of flowers.)

Today's Subhashita.

Tyajet kshudhaartaah jananee svaputram
 khaadet kshudhaarthaah bhujagee svamandam,
vubhukshitah kim na karoti paapam
ksheenaa janaah nishkarunaa bhavanti.

not.    Karoti = does.   Paapam = a sinful act.   Ksheenaa = weak.
Janaah = people.  Nishkarunaa= cruel, pitiless.  Bhavanti =become.

i.e.       In order to save her life a hungry mother even abandons her son,
and a female snake eats her own eggs.   That is why there is the saying
that a hungry person can commit any sin,  and in such a situation  even
weak  persons  become very cruel.

Today's Subhashita.

      " तुलसी जसि भवितव्यता तैसी मिलइ  सहाइ |
        आपुनु   आवइ ताहि  पहीं ताहि  तहां  लै जाइ  ||  - पद 159 (क)    }

Na kaalo dandamudyamya shirah kruntati  kasyachit.
Kaalasya  balametaavat  vipareetaarthadarshanam.

Na = not.   Kaalo =destiny.  Dandamudyamya = dandam + udyamya.

Kasyachit = kasya + chit.    Kasya = whose.    Chit =  thinking
Kaalasya = time.    Balametaavat = balam + etaavat.      Balam =.
power, strength.   Etaavat = so much.  Vipareetaarthadarshanam =
vipareet +artha + darshanam.    Vipareeta = opposite,  contrary.
Artha = meaning ,     Darshanam = viewing,  seeing.

i.e.     If the Destiny is against a person, it does not punish him by
striking him with a weapon, but destroys his thought process (as a
result of which he is unable to decide what is good or bad for him).
This is the main power of Destiny that the person concerned sees
every thing in the wrong perspective, which ultimately results in his
destruction.

Today's Subhashita.

Panchamehani shashthe vaa shaakam pachati sve gruhe.

vegetables.      Pachati = cooked.      Sve = his own.

an aquatic animal.      Modate = be happy,  rejoices.

i.e.            A person may be able to afford (due to poverty) a
frugal meal of  ordinary vegetables only every fifth or sixth
day at  his home, but if he is free from any debts and lives in
a foreign country,  he still enjoys a  carefree and happy life
like the creatures living under water.

(The above Subhashita is classified under the sub-head "Santosh"
i.e. satisfaction. Here a satisfied person has been compared to
the creatures living under water,  who lead a carefree life in spite
of hardships and shortages.)

Today's Subhashita.

Ati-sahasam-ati-dushkaram-ati-aascharyam
cha daanam-arthaanaam.
Yopi dadaati shareeram na dadaati sa vitta-lesham-api

Ati = too much.    Saahasam = adventurous.   Dushkaram =
arduous.    Ashcharyam = wonderful .  Daanam =
donation, giving as charity.   Arthaanaam = wealth, money.
Yo = whosoever.   Dadaaati = gives/   Shareeram = body.
vittam  = money.    lesham = a little.   Api even.

i.e.     Giving away  wealth as charity for social  purposes is a
very arduous,difficult  and a wonderful act.    But some people
( misers and greedy persons)will rather give up their life  but
will not spare even a very little portion of their wealth as charity.

Today's Subhashita.

Praaptavyamartham labhate manushyo devopi tam langhayitum na shaktah.
Tasmaana shochaami  na nishchayo me yadasmadeeyam nahi tatpareshaam.

Praaptavyamartham = praaptavyam + artham.   Praaptavyam =  atttainable.

Me = my.    adasmadeeyam = yat + asmadeeyam.    Yat = that.   Asmadeeyam=
our, ourss.    nahi = na + hi.    Hi = surely.   Tatpareshaam = others.

i.e.     If there is a possibility of acquiring wealth in a particular situation, a
man gets it and even Gods are not able to prevent him in doing so. Therefore,
I do not lament and it is my firm opinion and determination that whatever is
mine can not be of someone else.

(Through the use of a hyperbole this Subhashita  stresses  that before the firm
determination of a person even outwardly unachievable goals can be achieved.).

Today's Subhashita.

Sacchidro madhyakutilah karnah svarnasya bhaajanam .
Dhigdaivanihatam netram paatr kaajjalabhasmanah.

Scchidrao = with a hole., perforated.   Madhyakutilah =
Madhya + kutilah.    Madhya = middle of the body..  Kutilah =
curved, crooked.   Karnah = the ear.  Svarnasya = of the Gold.
Bhajanah = recipient., sharer.   Dhigdaivanihatam =  Dhik +
daiva + nihatam,    Dhik = shame upon.   Daiva = the Destiny.
Nihatam = struck down, afflicted with.   Netram = the eyes.

i.e.       Shame upon the Destiny, .which considers  the ears, which
have a hole in the middle and are curved, as a proper recipient  of
gold (ornaments) and considers the beautiful eyes  worthy of  the
lampblack

(The above Subhashita is classified under the sub-head "Destiny",
which plays a very important role in a person's life. There are
numerous instances of incompetent persons becoming rich and
competent persons as very poor. This subhashita underlines this
phenomenon through the simile of ears and eyes very powerfully.)

Today's Subhashita.

पहिं जाहिं सुभायें  ||  (बालकाण्ड पद २९४ ) }

Naambhodhirarthitaameti  sadaambhobhishcha pooryate.
Aatmataam to paatrataam  neyah paatramaayanti smpadah.

Naambhodhirarthitzaameti = Na +  ambhodhih +arthitaam +
eti.      Na = not.   Ambhodhih = the Ocean.       Artitaam =

Neyah = to be brought into a particular state or condition.
Patramaayanti = paatram + aayanti.    Paatram =receptacle.
Ayaanti =  arrives.    Sampadah = wealth.

i.e.                The ocean  neither desires nor approaches any
one for water., but  still  it always remains full .with water.
Similarly, if  a  person  makes  himself  worthy through
religious austerity, then considering him as a proper recipient
wealth itself favours him, although he may not desire it.

Today's Subhashita.

Vane rane shatrujalaagnimadhye
mahaarnave parvatmastake vaa.

adverse, difficult. sthitam =   situation. or a place.
Rakshanti = protect..    Punyaani = moral and religious
merits      Pyrakrutaani = done in the past or long ago.

i.e.     If a person has practised  religious austerity since long
time in the past, (and in his previous birth also),   he earns
'Punyas', which protect him from various dangers and difficult
situations such as in dense forests,in a battle field, from enemies,
water and fire, while crossing big oceans,and climbing mountain
peaks. or while asleep or in an inebriated condition.

( The above Subhashita deals with the doctrine of 'Punya' of  the
Indian Sanatan Dharma which says  that if a person duly observes
the  religious austerity as  prescribed  by the  Religion, he earns
certain 'plus points', which help him in leading a peaceful life in his
next birth cycle or even during his lifetime and give him protection
from all types of dangers.)

i.e.                If a person possesses some qualities, they themselves
blossom like flowers and  are visible to others just like the sweet
smell of  Kastoori (a perfume derived from the naval of a musk deer) ,
which makes its presence felt and does not require any swearing to
distinguish it ( and needs no advertisement)..

Yathaa khanan khanitrena  naro vaaryaadhigacchati.
Tathaa gurugatam viddyaam shushrushuradhigacchati.

Yathaa = for instance.    Khanana = digging.   Khanitrena=

belonging to a preceptor 0r a teacher.  Vidyaam  = knowledge.
Shushrushuradhigacchati = shushrooshuh +adhigaccgati.
Shushrooshuh = by serving with obedience and reverence.

i.e.     Just as people are able to reach a source of underground
water by digging the ground with digging instruments ( with
patience and hard labour), so also one can acquire knowledge
from a renowned Guru  only by serving him with devotion and
obedience.

(The process of acquiring knowledge from a Guru has been
compared to the digging of a well, which requires patience,
hard work and proper selection of the site for the well being
successful . )

of acquiring knowledge is available or is known.

Kim kulena vishaalena vidyaaheenasya dhinah.
Akuleenopi vidyaavaan devairapi supoojyate.

Kim = what ?    Kulena = caste, clan   Vishaalena =great,

not with a good background.   Vidyaavaan = learned,
well educated.     Devairapi =  devaih +  api.   Devaih =
gods.    Api = too, also.    Supoojyate = venerated.

i.e.     Of what use is being a member of a big caste or clan, if the
person concerned is not  well educated ?   On the other hand,, even
a person belonging to a low caste is venerated like a God if he is
a learned person.

(Through this Subhashita the importance of proper education
has been propagated. )

Budhaagre = budha +agre.    \\Budha = learned persons.  \

in front of a foolish person.    Api = even.     Cha = and.
Brooyaadutaproktam =  brooyaat +  utproktam .
Utproktam = on being told.  Vetti = understand.  Sah = he.

 i.e.        You should never narrate your virtues before noble and
learned persons, because they themselves  will notice them.
You should also not do so before a foolish person, because he
will not be able to understand and appreciate them.

(The above doctrine no more holds good in the modern era of
advertisements, where 'blowing one's own trumpet ' is the general
rule for self-promotion. )

Sevakah svaaminam dveshti krupanam parushaaksharam.

using harsh words.     Aatmaanam = himself.    Kim = why.
Sa = he   Na = not.     Sevyaa = service.   Sevyam =   serve.
Vetti = wish  to know,  decides.

i.e.     If the master of a servant is a miser as also foul mouthed ,
the servant tends to hate him.  Under such circumstance why
does he not hate himself for his inability to decide quitting his
service ?

(Generally people tend to blame extraneous circumstances for
 their woes, but at times they themselves are responsible for
 them. The above Subhashita deals with such a situation.)

i.e.    Unity is the real strength of a society and in the same
manner also of the weak persons.   Therefore, those persons
whoaspire for a united and powerful Nation always praise and
propagate unity among the citizens

na + aalokyam .   Alokyaam = the afterlife (heaven)   Taam =
him, her.   Udeerayet = should raise one's voice, get excited.

i.e.     One should never displease and cause pain to a person
who is already distressed, even if his mentality is to harm others,
and  should also not get afraid or excited and speak to him in
a raised voice,  thereby spoiling your afterlife .

i.e.       People are  always expert in  criticising others for their
shortcomings, whereas  they  either do  not know their own
shortcomings or even if they are  aware  about them, they try to
conceal them as a secret ..

clouds.    Payodheenaam = oceans.   Adhh = low, below..

i.e.     Admiration and respect  ability in the society is achieved only
by giving away wealth as charity and not by hoarding it. The position
of such donors is always high like a rain bearing cloud in the sky,
unlike the low position of the oceans on the Earth.

(By the use of the similes of a cloud for a philanthropic person, and
the ocean for a rich but miser person, the author of the Subhashita has
thus emphasized the importance of distribution of wealth for the benefit
of  the society.)

i.e.      We should protect our good character (and not our wealth)
by making special efforts, because wealth comes and goes, increases
and decreases. However, if character is lost the person concerned is
as good as a dead person.

implementation,you should  never disclose it verbally  to others,
because  such project in  the knowledge and observance of others
is never successfully implemented.

(The thought expressed in the aboce Subhashita is all the more
important under the present economic conditions, where the
knowledge about new ideas and inventions is kept as a closely
guarded secret and if leaked result into controversies as also
financial loss.)

whosoever.   Pashyati =  sees. Pashyati= correct viewpoint.

i.e.        A person who sees and respects the women and wives

insignificant like a lump of earth, and considers all the living
beings with compassion as his own self, is the person whose
viewpoint is the correct one.

hefty 'Dakshina' (donation), and on the other side is  the service
to the living beings on this earth  suffering from various diseases
and save their lives.

(  Both these acts are considered as religious and virtuous deeds.
This  Subhashita simply lists them . But so far as the quantum of
"Punya" ( religious merit ) is concerned, no doubt the latter gives
more "Punya" to its performer.)

mean and wicked persons are elated  at the misfortune and
calamity being faced by others.
