Gyaaanmantrsadaacharairgauraavam  bhajate Guruh,
Tasmacchishyah kshameebhootvaa Guruvaakyam na
langhayet.

Gyaana + mantra+ sadaachaaraih +gauravam.    Gyaana= Knowledge

a student.    Kshmeebhootvaa =kshmee +bhootvaa.    Kshami= patience,
endurance.   Bhootvaa = by becoming.   Guruvaakyam = commands or
instructions of the Teacher.    Na = not.    Langhayet = go beyond or
against.

i.e.       It is the duty of a student that he should revere his Guru (teacher)
intelligently with good manners and admiration. Therefore, he should be
very patient and never go beyond or against the instructions given by his
Guru.

Today's Subhashita.

Shaktim karoti smchaare sheetoshne marshayatyapi .
Deepayatyudare vahnim  daaridryam  paramaushadham,

shaktim = strength, energy.    Karoti = does,   Smchaare =
transmits,communicates.    Sheetoshne = cold and hot.
Marshayatyapi = marshayati + api.   Marshayati = suffers.
Api = even.             Deepayatyudare = deepayati + udare.
Deepayati = ignites, sets on fire.   Udare = in the stomach.
Daaridryam = poverty.       Paramaushadham  = param +
aushadham.    Param = absolute, highest.   Aushadham  =
mdiicine.

i.e.     Although poverty causes much hardships, it gives to
poor people the strength and energy to bear cold and heat
equally, and  the fire of hunger in their belly keeps them fit.
Really,  poverty is  a supreme medicine.

(The above Subhashita is a fine example of censuring in the
guise of praising.  Affluent and rich persons lack in the
capacity of bearing cold and hot climate and due to their food
habits also suffer from various diseases related to stomach  and
digestion.  Fasting is termed as best medicine for such diseases,
which the poor people are doomed to face throughout their life. )

Na pashyamo mukhe dmshtraam  na paasham  vaa  karanchale.
Uttamarnamavekshaiva tathaapyudvijate janah.

Na = not.  Pashyaamo =by seeing.   Mukhe = face.   Dmshtraam=
large teeth.      Paasham =  a noose       Vaa= or        Karaanchale=
on the hand.    Uttamarnamavekhsiava = Uttamarnam +avekshya+
eva.    Uttamarna = a creditor (a person who has lent money to
someone.)        Aveekshya =visited by.         Aiva = thus , really.
Tathaapyudvijate = taathaapi + ud vijate.     Tathaapi = even then.
Udvijate = tremble, become agitated,    Janah = people.

i.e.     A creditor  has neither fierce teeth on his mouth nor a noose
or a chain held by him on his hand,  even then people (the debtors)
tremble and get agitated on seeing him.

(In this Subhashita the mentality of a debtor towards his creditor on
being confronted by the creditor has been nicely described.)

Anusarati karikapolam bhramarah shravanena taadyamaanopi.
Ganayati na tiraskaaram daanaandhavilochano neechah.

Anusarati = goes after.    Kari = an elephant.   Kapolam = cheek.
Bhramarah = a kind of bumble bee.     Shravanena = by the ears.
Taadyamaanopi = Taadyamaano + api.    Taadyamaano = on being
struck.    Api = even.     Ganayati =  takes  notice of.    Na= not.
Tiraskaaram = contempt.    Daanaandhavilochano = daan+ andha +
vilochano.    Daana = donation, giving away as charity.   Andha =
blind.    Vilochano = eyes.    Neeechah = a wicked and mean person.

i.e.     A bumble bee  hovering over the cheeks of an elephant (in rut)
goes after the elephant in spite of the elephant hitting it  repeatedly
with its large ears.    In  the same manner mean and wicked  persons
blinded by their desire  to get alms from the rich persons also do not
take any notice of the contempt shown towards them by the rich donor.

(When an elephant is in rut a fluid flows from its cheeks, which attracts
swarms of bumble bees. This phenomenon has been used as a simile for
the behaviour of beggars towards their donors. )

एकमापातमधुरमन्यदालोचनामृतम्               ||
                        =सुभाषित रत्नाकर (कल्पतरु)

Sangeetamapi  saahityam  Sarasvatyaah stanadvyam.
Ekamaapaatamadhuramanyadaalochanaamrutam.

Sangeetamapi = Sangeetam + api;    Sangeetam = Music.
Api = even.    Saahityam = literature.    Sarasvatyaah =
of the Goddess Sarasvati.    Stanadvyam = two breasts.
Ekam + aapaatam+madhuram + anyat +aalochana+
amrutam.    Ekam = one.    Apaat = flowing down.
Madhuram = melodious (music)   Anyad= the other .
Alochana =  literary observations and  deliberations.
Amrutam + the nectar of Gods.

i.e.     Music and literature  are like the two breasts of  the
Goddess Sarasvati, the presiding deity of all fine arts, music
and literature.  From one breast flows the sweet Music and
from the other breast flows the beautiful and eternal literature
like the nectar of Gods.

Antakopi  hi  jantoonaamantakaalamupekshate.
Na  kaalaniyamah  kashchiduttamaranasya  vidyate.

Antakopi = antako + api.      Antako = the God of Death.
Api = even.     Hi = surely.   Jantoonaam +antakaalam +
upekshate.   Jantoonaam = all living beings.   Antakaalam=
time of death.     Upekshate = disregards, overlooks.   Na =
not.   Kaalanimayah =the rules of  Death.    Kashchit = any.
Uttamarnasya= a creditor's (a person who has given a loan
to somebody).  Vidyate = there exists.

i.e.     Only the God of Death can can disregard or overlook
the time of death of a living being, because there is no rule
prescribed by Him  to add more years to the life of a living
being by way of a loan.

(The idea behind this Subhashit is that the longevity of  all
living beings is pre-determined by the God Almighty.)

Ekasya karma samveekshya karotyanyopi garhitam.
Gataanugatiko loko na lokah paaramaarthikah .

Ekasya  = of one person's .    Karma = action. any activity.
Samveekshya = by looking at or observing.   Karoti +
anyo + api.    Karoti = do.    Anyo = others.   Api = even.
Garhitam =  something wrong or forbidden ,  going the
wrong way.    Gataanugatiko = imitative, following what
precedes.    Loko = people.   Na = not.   Lokah =human
race.    Paaramaarthikah = one who cares for spiritual  truth.

i.e.   By observing a person doing some wrong and forbidden
action, other people also do similar acts, because there is a
tendency among people imitate others or  following what
precedes them.  But such inclination is not seen in the matters
relating to spirituality and philanthropy.

Today's Subhashita.

Oorjitam sajjananam drushtvaa dveshti neechah punahpunah.
Kavaleekurute svastham vidhum divi vidhumtudah.

Oorjitam = powerful, excellent.    Sajjanaanaam = noble and
virtuous persons,    Drushtvaa =on seeing.   Dveshti = hatred.
Neechah = a wicked and mean person.    Punahpunah = again
and again.   Kavalee =swallowing, devouring.   Kurute = does.
Svastham = comfortable, healthy.   Vidhum = the Moon.
Divi = sky.   Vidhuntudah= Rahu , an imaginary planet( called
Dragon's head in Astronmy,which causes the eclipse of the Moon
when it is in full bloom).

i.e.      On seeing a powerful,noble and virtuous person , mean and
wicked persons develop hatred towards  him and try to harm him
again and again just like the Dragon's head, which devours the Moon
when it is at his brightest best.

(By using the metaphor of a Lunar eclipse the author of the Subhashita
has expressed the tendency of hatred and envy among wicked and mean
persons towards noble and virtuous persons. Gosvami Tulasi Das, a poet
of Hindi has used this simile in a different way by saying that one should
no take lightly his enemy, however insignificant he may be, because  a
beheaded demon Rahu still torments both the Sun and Moon by devouring
them (reference to Solar and Lunar eclipses) .

Yasya vaanyaasti  madhraa tasyeva saphalam taamavoppanishpah.
Nochejjeevanti pashvoppanisham pushtishaalinah

Yasya = whose.  Vaanyaasti = vaanyaa +asti.   Vaanyaa=

live.    Pashavoppanisham =  pashavopi + anisham.  Pashavopi=
even animals.   Anisham = constantly.     Pushtishaalinah=
Pushti = thriving     Shalin = endowed with, possessing.

i.e.    A person who speaks with eloquence in a pleasing manner,
all the penance he undergoes while doing his duties, always
brings fruitful results to him. Otherwise  animals too thrive by
their instinct to remain alive.

(This Subhashita deals with eloquence of speech, which faculty
differentiates a man from an animal and makes him superior among
all living beings.  If a person uses harsh and foul language while
speaking to others, it results in failure in even those tasks which
would have otherwise been accomplished. This is the hidden
message in this Subhashita.)

Vibudhaanaam sabhaayaam tu  kalaavaaneva raajate.
Harastaanakhilaanstyaktkaa  tameva shirasaa dadhau.

Vibudhaanaam = very wise and learned men.   Sabhaayaam=
in the assembly of.        Tu = and, but.            Kalaavaaneva =
kalaavaana+eva.    kalaavaana =a person conversant with arts.

tyaktkaa.    Harah = a  name of Lord Shiva.  Taam= them.
Akhilaam= entire.   Tyaktaa = ab of andoned.    Tameva = tam +
eva. Tam =to it.   Shirasaa= on the forehead.  Dhaaryate =wears.

i.e.     In an assembly of wise and learned persons only those
persons shine, who are experts in various arts.  Only for this
reason Lord Shiva has adorned his forehead with a segment of
the Moon. abandoning other embellishments.

(This Subhashita is in praise of persons well versed in various arts.
The Moon symbolises  various arts and beauty in Sanskrit and is
also called 'Kalanidhi'  i.e. a treasure house of  beauty and arts, and
one segment of the Moon also adorns the forehead of Lord Shiva.
This has been used as a metaphor in this Subhashita.)

Guroradheetaakhilavaidyavidyah  peeyushapaanih kushalah kriya

kind , merciful.     Shuddho+adhikaari   Shuddho = clean.
Adhikaari = an authority.  Bhishagee = a physician.    Drushh=
in appearance.    Syaat = perhaps.

i.e.     A Vaidya (physician)  who has learnt the entire science of
Indian Medicine from his teacher, is so much expert in conducting
various critical operations as if he has in his hands 'Amruta' , the
nectar of Gods capable to bring to life a dead person, is not envious,
possesses firmness, is merciful and clean, is perhaps an ideal Vaidya.

(The above Subhashita praises a competent 'Vaidya' by describing
the essential qualities he must have. In another Subhashita criticizing
an incompetent and greedy Vaidya he has been described as a cousin
brother of Yama, the God of Death.)

Abhyaasinaameva labhyaa  api  vidyaashchaaturdasha.
Apyarkamandalam  bhitvaabhyaasinaiveha   gamyate.

Abhyaasinaameva = abhisaaniaam + eva.    Abhyaasinaam =

Arkamandalam =Solar system.   Bhitva-abhyaasinaiveha =
Bhitvaa = breaking.    Abhyaasinaivaih. = regular practitioners.
Gamyate = travels, goes.

i.e.      People are able to learn even fourteen disciplines of Learning
simply by regular practice.  See ! the Sun also traverses the Solar System
continuously only because of regular practice.

(The above Subhashita highlights the importance of regular practice
to have command over any discipline of Learning.  Another Subhashita
goes to the extent of saying that if no regular practice is done to revise
and update the knowledge,it becomes outdated and is just like a poison.)

Achodyamaanaani yathaa pshpaani cha phalaani cha.

course.

off animals and birds for protecting the crop .

(In the above Subhashita a miser as been most aptly compared to a
scare-crow erected in a field  to protect the crop.)

beautiful lotus flower in this World.

(Through the use of a hyperbole that even God himself desires
to have the dust of the feet of noble persons ,the  author of this
Subhashita. has praised the contribution of noble persons in the
Society.)

continue to help the needy persons to the best of their ability and power,
just like the Moon, who, even eclipsed and subdued by the fierce,terrible
and crooked Rahu (Dragon;s head) , what not efforts he does to make the
people on the Earth happy by the remnants of its rays ?  (i.e. he does every
possible effort .)

result in cessation of friendship between a cluster of lotus flowers
blooming only during the night ?   Not at all.

(A variety of lotus flowers blooms only in the night.  Through the
simile of Lotus flowers and the Moon, the author of the above
Subhashita has emphasised that the friendship among noble and
virtuous persons is not affected by any temporary separation among
them )

deeds  just like the Moon who  even being eclipsed by Rahu (Dragon's
head) continues to brighten the Universe .

(In this Subhashita noble and righteous persons have been praised by using
the simile of the Moon and its eclipse for noble persons facing a calamity,
who, still continue to do benevolent deeds.)

God Shiva.   Vibhaarti = excel by .  Moordhnendum = moordhni +
indum.   Moordhni = over the forehead .   Indu = the Moon.
Svarbhaanustam = svarbhaanuh + tam.  Svarbhaanuh = Rahu or
the imaginary planet called Dragon's head in English.   Tam =
to him (the Moon).    Jighrukshati = seizes (lunar eclipse)

i.e.   Only honourable persons give due respect to other honourable
persons and surely not so by other ordinary persons.  Just see, how
Lord Shiva adorns the vibrant moon by placing it over his forehead,
whereas Rahu (Dragon's head)  seizes the Moon during the Lunar
Eclipse.

(In this Subhashita the phenomenon of Lunar eclipse has been used as
a simile to emphasise the fact that only honourable persons give due
respect to other honourable persons. )

regard, respect.    Nirataanaam = persons engaged in.    Naatmakaarye =
na + aatmakaarye. = one's own duty.

i.e.    The Moon  illuminates the whole World by its radiance, but why it
is destined to wipe its dark spots himself ?    Similarly, it is observed  that
noble and righteous persons who are engaged in the welfare of society are
not given due respect for the work done by them, (It is another matter that
they do such work without expecting any reward or respect.)

(In Sanskrit literature the dark spots on the Moon's surface and its brightness
are frequently used as a metaphor for the face of beautiful women and their
blemishes. In this Subhashita noble and righteous persons have been compared
with the Moon.  Noble persons also do not get full credit of their philanthropic
work just like the Moon. )

Kashaayairupavaasaishcha  krutamullopataam nrunaam.

 i.e.   People get cured  from common ailments by using aromatic
astringents easily available in our day-to-day life , but if for their
 treatment a Vaidya prescribes his own costly medicines, he robs
people of their wealth.

(This Subhashita is classified under the caption 'criticism of a
Vaidya' .  There are many diseases which can be cured by the use
of commonly used herbs and vegetation used in our day to day life.
But if a doctor prescribes his own or patented costly medicines for
curing these ailments, he definitely robs the people of their wealth.
This tendency of prescribing very costly medicines is now-a-days
very rampant , particularly in western system of medical treatment.)

austerity.

comparing them to a dog , whose habit is  to drink water by licking
it (symbolising miserly behaviour) .

i.e.     God Almighty by seeing a beggar who was blind and without
a wife, by way of compassion told the beggar to ask only one boon to
be fulfilled.   The beggar cunningly asked the God to bless him with a
son entitled to use a ceremonial umbrella (a high dignitary or a ruler)
whom he should see through his own eyes.

(This Subhashita is an example of light humour,  He cunningly asked for
such a boon which could be fulfilled only when he gets married and his
blindness is also removed . and it was actually a 'three in one' boon. )

(The above Subhashita besides criticizing the incompetent
Kings and rulers, also hints at the problems faced by their
attendants.)

King  Swans ?

(This subhashita is also an  allegory.  Using the metaphor of a
King Swan the author has has highlighted the travails of rich
persons , who by a quirk of fate are now facing poverty and
hard times.)

Today's Subhashita.

Re  raajhamsa kimiti tvamihaagatosi

Yaavadvadanti na bakam khalu moodha lokaah.

Yavat = until.   Vadanti = they say.   Na = not.   Bakam = crane,
Khalu = certainly.    Moodha = stupid    Lokaah = people.

i.e.    O beautiful Swan !  why have you come to this place  ?   Here cranes
are known as swans.   Therefore, so long as you are certainly treated as a
crane by the foolish inhabitants of this place, it is better for you to go back
immediately to your original place  of living.

(This Subhashita is also an allegory using a swan as a metaphor for noble
and learned person.  In Sanskrit literature a Swan is a revered bird, associated
with Saraswati ,the Goddess of Learning, as her vehicle and its abode is the
famous lake Manasarovar , and is also said to possess the power of separating
milk from a mixture of milk and water, called 'Neera-ksheera Vivek'.   The
underlying idea is that learned persons do not get recognition in the company
of foolish and proud persons and it is advisable not to associate with them .)
