Today's Subhashita.

Khalah sajjana-kaarpaas,dhakshanaika-hutaashanah.
Paraduhkhaagni-dhamana-maarutah kena  varnyataam.

Khalah = a wicked person.    Sajjana = noble person.
Kaarpaasa = cotton.  Dhakshana = burning.  Eka = one,
single,   Hutaashanah = fire.    Paraduhkhaagni = para +
duhkha=agni.   Para = of others'    Duhkha = misery.
Agni=  fire.    Dhaman = burning.   Maarutah = wind.
Kena = Why ?   how ?    Varnyataam= described.

i.e.     Noble and righteous persons are like the soft cotton.
and wicked persons are like a fire which instantly burns the
cotton.  In what other manner can we describe the wicked
persons,who stoke the fire of miseries of other persons like
a blowing wind ?

(Through these two similes the author has described the true
 nature of wicked persons, of  causing harm to others without
any reason.)

Today's Subhashita.

Tyajati cha gunaan sudooram tanumapi dosham nireekshya gruhnaati.
Muktaaalankruta-keshaan yookaamiva vaanarah  Pishunah.

Tyajati = gives up    Cha = and.   Gunaan = virtues.      Sudooram =
very far away.     Tanumapi = tanum +api.   Tanum = minute.    Api =
even.    Dosham =  defect, shortcoming.    Nireekshya = by observing.
Gruhnaati = grapples.   Muktaalamkrutakeshaan = muktaa +alankruta+
keshaan.    Muktaa = pearls.   Alankruta = decorated.    Keshaan = hairs.
Yookaamiva  - Yookaam + iva.    Yookaam =louse (a parasitic insect)
Iva = like a (comparison)   Vanarah = a monkey.    Pishunah = a wicked
person.

i.e.     A wicked person gives up all virtues and stays away from them, but
is able to observe even minutest defects in other persons and quickly adopts
them .  He is just like a monkey decorated with a pearl necklace , but having
his hairs  infested by lice.

(This Subhashita  is classified as ' condemning the wicked persons' . Through
a simile of a lice infested monkey wearing a pearl necklace, the author has
highlighted that although outwardly a wicked person may appear to be normal
his wickedness is hidden just like the lice in the hairs of the monkey.)

Dahyamaaanaah suteekshnena  neechaah parayashogninaa.
Ashaktaaastatpadam gantum tato nindaamn prakurvate.

Dahyamaanaah = in flames.   Suteekshenena = painfully.
Neechaah = lowly and mean persons.  Parayashogninaa=
para + yasho + agninaa.    Para = others.   Yasho =fame.
Agnina =  by the fire of.    Ashaktaastatpadam = ashaktaah +
tat + padam.    Ashaktaah = incapable of .   Tat =  that.
Padam=post.   Gantum= go, reach.   Tato=then.  Nindaam=
defame, abuse.   Prakurvate =  do.

i.e.    Lowly and mean persons  get scorched in the fire of fame
achieved by other virtuous persons (are envious of the progress
of those persons). However, if they are incapable of  achieving
the  same status  or  post, then  they start abusing and defaming
those virtuous persons.

जीमूतस्तु  निदाघसंभृतजगत्सन्तापविच्छित्तये   ||
                            -  सुभाषित रत्नाकर (सभा तरंग )

Kshudraah  santi sahasrashah svabharana-vyaapaara-maatro-ddyataah.
Svaartho yasya paraartha eva sa pumaa-nekah  sataam-agranee.
Dushpoorodara pooranaaya  pivati srotahpati  vaadavo.
Jeemootastu nidaagha-smbhruta-jagat-santaapa-vicchittaye.

Kshudraah =small,  petty.   Santi  =are     Sahasrashah = by thousands .
Svabharana = self sustenance.  Vyaapaara = business.   Maatra = only.
Udyataa =engaged in.    Svaartho = one's own aim or objective.   Yasya=
whose.    Paraartha = intent upon others' welfare.   Eva = really.   Sa =
that.   Pumaanekah =pumaan + ekah.    Pomaan = man.   Ekah = one.
Sataamagranee =sataam+agranee.  Sataam=noble and virtuous persons.
Agranee = in the forefront.  Dushpoora =difficult to be filled or satisfied.
Udarapooranaaya =for supporting oneself.  Pivati =drinks.   Srotahpati =
the Ocean.   Vaadavo = submarine fire.    Jeemootah =  Cloud.   Tu =and,
but.     Nidaagha =Summer season.    Sambhruta = caused by,       Jagat=
the World.   Santaapa = grief, heat.    Vicchattaye = cessation, prevention.

i.e.  Ordinary people who are engaged in business and other profession for
their self-sustenance ,  are available in thousands, but such a person whose
aim in life is to dedicate himself for the welfare of poor and needy persons,
is foremost among all noble and virtuous persons. For instance,although the
Ocean gets water from all sources, but still its belly is never full and a fire
burns inside it. On the other hand the clouds which get the water from the
Ocean, they distribute it by their rain over the earth and save it from  the
scorching heat of the summer season.

Anukurutah  khalasujanaamagrimapaashchaatyabhaagayoh
soochyaah.
Vidadhaatirandhrameko gunavaananyastu  pidadhaati.

Anukurutah = imitating.    Khala = a wicked person.   Sujanaam=
noble person   Agrim=front.   Pashchaatya = back.   Bhaagayoh =
parts,   Soochyaah = of a needle.   Vidadhaati = renders. produces.
Randhram = a hole, a slit.   Eko = one.     Gunavaan = virtuous,
with the thread.    Anyastu = anyah + tu.     Anyah = to the other
i.e. the hole or a slit.    Tu = but, and.     Pidadhaati = shuts.

i.e.    By remaining in front and the back of wicked persons, noble
persons nullify the effect of the misdeeds of wicked persons just like
the thread tucked to a needle repairs the hole or a slit in a garment.

(By the use of a simile of the thread and a needle, the author of this
Subhashita has outlined the nature of noble and wicked persons.)

Nahi  bhavati  viyogah snehavicchedahetu-
rjagati  gunanidheenaam sajjanaanaam  kadaachit,
Ghanatimir  nibaddho  doorasmsthopi  Chandrah.
Kimu kumudavanaanaam  premabhangam  karoti.

Nahi = not at all.      Bhavati = happens.      Viyogah =
separation.   Sneha = affection.    Viccheda =cessation.
Hetuh = reason.     Jagati =  Earth.   Gunanidheenaam=
virtuous persons.   Sajjanaanaam = respectable persons.
Kadaachit = sometimes. Ghanatimira =darkness caused
in the night by dark clouds.   Nibaddho = covered by.
Doorasmstho = staying .far away.    Chandrah= Moon.
Kimu = can it ?.        Kumuda= a variety of lotus which
blooms in the night,  Vanaanaam = a cluster.   Prema-
bhangam = breaking of relationship of love.    Karoti=
does.

i.e.    In this World  the  separation between the respectable
and virtuous persons due to some reason does not  result at
all in cessation of their friendship, just like the relationship
between a cluster of  Lotus flowers and the Moon remains
unbroken, although the Moon stays far away in the sky and
at times is covered by dark clouds.

Maata  yasya  gruhe  naasti  bhaaryaa chapriyavaadinee.
Aranyam tena gantavyam yathaaranyam tatha gruham.

Maata = mother.    Yasya = whose.   Gruhe = home.
Naasti = non-existent.    Bhaaryaa = wife.   Cha =  and.
Apriyavaadinee =speaking harshly.    Aranyam = a forest.
Tena = he.   Gantavyam = go.   Yathaa = for instance.
Tatha = so, thus.

i.e.    A person who has no mother to look after him and his
wife is very rude and foul-mouthed , he should better reside
in a forest, because his home is also just like a forest
full of hardships.

Today's Subhashita.

Ahaha chandasameerana  daarunam kimidam-aacharitam
charitam tvayaa.
Yadiha chaataka-chanchu-putodare patati vaari tadeva
nivaaritam.

Ahaha =Aha ! (an interjection). Chanda=cruel.  Sameerana=
wind.   Daarunam =violent, severe.   Kim =why ?   Acharitam=
behaving.    Charitam = deeds.    Tvayaa =  you.      Yadiha=
whenever.   Chaatak = the Chaatak bird.    Chanchuputodare =
in the cavity of the beak.     Patati = falls.       Vaari = water.
Tadeva= that.    Nivaaritam = hindered, prevented.

i.e.   Aha !   O extremely fast blowing Wind ,  why are you
behaving so cruelly with the Chaatak bird ?  Whenever it tries
to trap the drops of rain in the cavity of its beak, you are not
allowing it to do so by blowing away the drops of rain.

(The above Subhashita is a 'Vaayvanyokti' (allegory using the
wind as a medium) directed towards wicked persons, whose
tendency is to unnecessarily put hindrances in other persons'
work.  We have already said that the Chatak quenches its thirst
only by the rain occurring during a particular celestial position
in the sky. So, preventing it from drinking water at that time is
extremity of cruelty, which has been condemned in this verse.)

Anye tey  jaladaayino jaladharaastrushnaam vinighnanti ye.
Bhraatashchaatak kim vruthaa viruditaih khinnosi vishraamyataam.
Meghah shaarada eva kaashadhavalah paaneeyariktodaro.
Garjatyeva  hi kevalam bhrushataram no bindumapyujjhati.

Anye = others.   Tey = they.    Jaladaayino = providing water (rain)
Jaladharaah = clouds.   Trushnaam = thirst.   Vinighnanti = kill,
(quench).    Ye = those.     Bhraatah = brother.    Chaataka = name of
a bird.   Kim = why.   Vruthaa = in vain.   Viruditaih =  wails.
Khinnosi = distressed, sad.   Vishraamyataam=  quiet.   Meghahah=
clouds.      Shaarada = autumn season.    Eva =thus,       Kaash =
a type of grass which produces white flowers.   Dhavalah =beautiful.
Paaneeyariktodaro = paaneeya + rikta + udaro.   Paaneeya = water.
Rikta = empty.   Udaro = abdomen, stomach.   Garjatyeva = make a
rumbling sound.   Hi = surely.  Kevalam = only.    Bhrushataram =
very loud   No = not.   Bindumapyujjhati= bindum + api + ujjhati,
Bindum = drop of water.    Ujjhati = discharges.

i.e.   O brother Chatak !  why are you wailing in vain and are so sad
and depressed ?  Those clouds which provide rain and quench your
thirst  are quite different.   These white clouds of autumn season, like
the beautiful white flowers of 'Kaash' ,  are empty and do not provide
even a single drop of water but simply produce loud rumbling sound.

(This Subhashita is also a 'Chataakaanyyokti' (allegory) .The underlying
idea is that there are very few people who come forward to provide help
and mostly people simply give an assurance which is never fulfilled by
them. So, it is of no use to ask every body for help. )

Today's Subhashita.

 Eka  eva  khago  maanee  chiram jeevatu  chaatakah.
Mriyate  vaa pipaasaayaam  yaachite  vaa  purandaram.

Eka = 0ne.    Eva = really.   Khago = a bird.   Maanee =
proud, high minded.     Chiram =  long time.   Jeevatu =
live.    Chaatakah = name of a bird (There is a folk lore
that this bird quenches its thirst only from the rain falling
on the earth during a particular celestial position called
'Svaati  Nakshatra')       Mriyate = die.    Vaa = or , and.
Pipaasaayaam =   due to thirst.    Yaachite= imploring.
Purandaram = Indra, the God of rain.
at yo
i.e.        O 'Chatak' bird !   we wish that you enjoy a long
lifespan.  You are the only specie  among all birds who is
so proud and high minded that you implore Indra,the Rain
God, to provide you with water for quenching your thirst
and in absence thereof would rather prefer to die.

(This Subhashita is an 'Anyokti'  (allegory) The underlying
idea behind it is that great and noble men remain firm on
their duty and high ideals and do not hesitate even to die
to achieve their objective.

Today's Subhashita.

Chaatakah svaanumaanna jalam praarthayatembudaat.
Sa  svodaaratayaa sarvaam plaavayatymbunaa  maheem.

Chaatakah =name of a bird . (There is a folk lore that this bird
quenches its thirst only from the rain  falling on the Earth only
during a particular lunar position called 'Svaati nakshatra'.)
Svaanumaanena = sva + anumaanena.   Sva = one's own.
Anumaanena =guess, deduction.   Jalam =water.   Praarthayate=
makes a request.   Ambudaat = from the clouds.   Sa = he. (cloud)
Svodaaratayaa = sva + udaaratayaa.   Udaaratayaa = liberally.
Sarvaam =  entire.    Plaayatyambunaa = plaavayati+ambunaa.
Plaavayati = inundates. Ambunaa = with water. Maheem = Earth.

i.e.    The 'Chatak' bird requests the clouds to provide him very
little amount of water according to his meagre requirement, but
the clouds by being very liberal inundate the entire Earth with
water.

(This Subhashita is also an allegory called "Meghaanyokti" i.e.
using clouds as a metaphor.  The requirement of water varies
from person to person. If there is too much rain floods are created,
which are harmful not only for the Chatak but also for agriculture.
So, the underlying idea is that too much of rain is  also disastrous.)

Today's Subhashita.

Tvayi  vaharshati  parjanye  sarve  pallavitaa  drumaah.
Asyaakamarkavrukshaanaam  poorvapatreshu  smshayh.

Tvayi =  you.    Varshati = rains.   Parjanye = O cloud !
Sarve = all .    Pallivitaa = full of new sprouts and leaves.
Drumaah = trees .   Asyaakamarkavrukshaanaam = Asyaakam+

a plant botanical named calotropis gigantia found in South-east
Asia and in other parts of the world.   During rainy season it
sheds its leaves in contrast to other trees which grow during
rainy season.   Vrukshanaam = trees.   Poorva = previous,
Patreshu = leaves.   Smshayah = there is doubt about.

i.e.     O rain bearing cloud !  when you bestow the nature with rain
all trees are full of new sprouts and leaves, but we also  have 'Arka'
trees which do not do so. On the other hand it is doubtful whether
their existing leaves will remain intact.

(This Subhashita is an "Anyokti" (allegory) using the cloud and rainy
season as a metaphor.  The underlying idea is that under the rule of
a  benevolent  ruler all citizens thrive  except the  mean and wicked
persons and even their existence is also doubtful.   This fact has been
used by a Hindi poet very nicely in a couplet, which says that the 'Ark'
tree has shed all its leaves, just like in the rule of a powerful and virtuous
ruler all thieves and wicked   persons become jobless.)

grieved and disheartened.

and no facilities for studying and acquiring knowledge are
available.

Na = not.    Naashyate = extinguished, destroyed.

i.e.     The way of doing a task by wise and virtuous persons is
very steady and long lasting and remains undisturbed by the
impediments purposely created by mean and wicked persons,
just like a lamp in which  jewels give out light   ( in modern
parlance an electric bulb) can not get extinguished even in a
strong gust of wind.

Maardavam = softness, pliancy.

i.e.    Wicked persons, even if they may be well versed and
in Vedas and other scriptures are devoid of kindness, just
like the Mainaak mountain, which, although immersed  in
the Ocean since ages, is still not pliant (i,e, hard and rigid).

(This Subhashita is also classified as 'censuring the wicked
persons' . Through a simile the author has emphasised that
in spite of good company and education, there is no change
for betterment  in the nature of wicked persons. )

grown in the sky i.e. any thing that is impossible ).

i.e.    The fame of wicked persons gets destroyed just like the

a fire .They are devoid of any compassion just like no flowers
growing in the void of the sky and cause much distress and pain
to noble persons.

i.e.      Of what use is the outward help to those persons
who are bereft of any inner strength and intellect ?
Just see !  bamboo plants growing in Malaya region in a
forest of Sandalwood trees remain bamboo plants and do
not become sandalwood.

(This Subhashita is classified as 'description of foolish persons'
By the use of a simile of bamboo plants growing along with the
Sandalwood, the author has emphasised that in spite of being
in the company of learned persons fools can not become learned
persons due to lack of inner strength and intellect in them.)

virtuous persons prosper like lotus flowers under the bright
Sun.)

O honourable artists  !   we welcome and salute you, because
your arrival  here is symbolic of the arrival of  Sharada, the
Goddess of all knowledge and arts, as a result of which all
our citizens will acquire pure and resplendent intellect.

(A Country where scholars and artists do not get proper respect
and recognition can never progress. This is the indirect message
of the above Subhishata.)

Comment by Poornima Mohan :-

Poornima Mohan This verse also refers to the full moon. कलावान् is the moon complete with all his Kalas or digits. The most splendorous full moon is the one that marks the Sharat season in October. So this verse says "Salutations to that moon, the clearness of whose digits makes known to everyone the imminent Splendors of the Sharat season" .

Mohan Chandra JoshiGroup Admin Many thanks for the real hidden meanings of this Subhashita , which , I failed to fathom due to my limited understanding of Sanskrit. I construed the meaning of 'Shaaradaagama ' as arrival of Sarasvati and not of the sharad season..

Poornima Mohan 🙏Sir, the meaning you have given is certainly the intended one.

short lived, sick or childless and is a cause of sadness or dejection
to his parents.

(It is generally observed that great artists ,scientists, social reformers
etc,.are either short lived, sick or childless, e.g. the mathematician
Ramaanujam, Shankarachaary, Swami Vivekaanand, scientist Stephan
Hawking, former President A.P.J.Abdul Kalam  etc.  This Subhashita
outlines this phenomenon nicely.)

(When small children learn to speak, their babbling and prattling is a
source of joy to their parents.   The same has been highlighted in the
above Subhasita by way of asking questions.)

Punyamataam =virtuous and noble men.   Eva =really.  Paatree =
recipient. Bhavati = become.     Netrayoh = eyes.

i.e.  The joy of observing a playful. smiling and beautiful child
like a blooming lotus  flower and crawling  on his knees, is enjoyed

Today's Subhashita.

Varam baalye mrutyurna punaradhanam yauvanamida.

i.e.     It is preferable to die in early childhood rather than to be a pauper
during one's  youth.   Instead of having a rude and ill-mannered wife, it is
better to have a prostitute as a wife.  Instead of being a servant of a person
who is not prudent and judicious , one should better leave that town and
settle in a foreign country.  It is also preferable to die rather than  living in
the company of vile and wicked persons .

Tulasidas in a poem titled "Thumaki chalat Ramchandra  baajat
paijaniyaa."  in praise of Lord Ramchandra.)

Today's Subhashita.

Antahkaturapi  laghurapi sadvruttam yah pumaana smtyajati.
Sa bhavati sadyo vandyah sarshapa iva  sarvalokasya.

i.e.        A person who does not quit his virtuous and righteous
behaviour even on the face of adverse circumstances, is revered
by the people just like the mustard seed, although it is very small
in size and bitter in taste.

(Mustard seed has a prominent place in the lifestyle of people in
India due to its nutritional and medicinal qualities. It has also a
prominent place in religious rituals in the society. By using it as
a simile for noble and righteous persons the author has stresses
that a person is revered in society by his inherent qualities and
not his outer appearance. )
