Daatruvyam  priyavaktrutam  dheeratvamuchitagyataa.
Abhyaasena  na  labhyante  chatvaarah  sahajaa  gunaa.

Daatrutvam =liberal in giving donations.  Priyavaktrutva=
speaking kindly.  Dheeratvam+uchitagyataa.   Dheeratvam=

Today's Subhashita.

Buddhiryasya  balam  tasya nirbuddheshcha  kuto balam.
Vane simho  madonmattah  sashakena  nipaatitah.

Buddhih + yasya.     Buddhih = intelligence.   Yasya = whose.
Balam = power.    Tasya = his.  Nirbuddheh +cha.   Cha =and.
Nirbuddheh = a stupid person    Kuto = from where ?    Vane =
in a forest.    Simho = a lion,    Madonmattah = intoxicated by
passion.  Shashakena = by a rabbit.   Nipaatitah=destroyed.

i.e.     Whosoever is intelligent is also powerful , and how can
a stupid person  (although physically strong)  be  a powerful
person ?  See, in a forest a  rabbit was able to destroy a Lion
intoxicated by passion.

(Through this Subhashita the author wants to convey the message
that merely possessing the power by a person is not sufficient and
the person must be intelligent enough to wield that power and to
illustrate this he has given the reference of the famous fable of the
lion and a rabbit from the 'Panchatantra' . The rabbit induced the
lion to believe that his reflection in the water inside the well was
another  lion, whereby the lion jumped inside the well to fight with
 his reflection in the water and died.)

Vipro vrukshastasya  moolam cha Sandhyaa,
Vedah shaakhaa  dharma karmaani patram.
Tasyaanmoolam yatnato rakshneeyam.
Chinne moole naiva shaakhaa na patram.

Vipro = a wise and learned Braahmana.   Vrukshah +tasya.
Vrukshah  = a tree.   Tasya = its.  Moolam=the root. Cha =
and.    Sandhyaa = the deity presiding over the three divisions
of the day, and religious ritual performed by Brahmanas and
the twice born men at the above three divisions of the day.
Vedah = the fourVedas, the Sacred scriptures of Sanaatana
Dharma.  Shaakhaa = branches. Dharma karmaani = various
religious rituals.    Patram = leaves.   Tasmaat + mooolam
Tasmaat = therefore.    Yatnato = with special care and
effort.  Rakshaneeyam = to be guarded or protected from.
Chinne = on being cut off.    Naiva = hardly,  no.

i.e.  A wise and learned Braahmana is like a tree and its roots
are performing the ritual of 'Sandhya Vandan" (chanting the
'Gaayatri Mantra' thrice every day in the morning, noon and
evening), the four Vedaas are like the branches of this tree,and
performing various  other religious rituals are the foliage of
this tree.  Therefore, it is the sacred duty of every Braahmana
to take special care and effort to protect the roots, because if the
root is cut off neither the branches nor the leaves of the tree will
survive.

( In this Subhashita by the use of a simile the author emphasises
the importance of the role played by Brahmans in propagating and
preserving the Sanatan Dharma.  If they do not do so there is the
danger of Sanatan Dharma becoming extinct. )

राजद्वेषाद्भवेन्नाशो  ब्रह्मद्वेषात्कुलक्षयः  ||
                            - चाणक्य नीति (१०/११)

Aapta-dveshaad-bhaven-mrutyuh  para-dveshaad--dhanakshayah.
Raaja-dveshaad-bhaven-naasho  Brahma-dveshaat-kulakshayah.

Aaptadveshaat +bhavet +mrutyuh.         Aptdveshaat = possessing
hatred and enmity towards others.   Bhavet =  happen.    Mrutyuh=
death.     Para = others.     Dveshaat = enmity.        Dhanakshayah =
loss of wealth.   Raja =king, Government.   Naasho=ruin, extinction.
Brahma=  God Almighty.   Kulakshayah= extinction of the family.

i.e.   A person full of hatred and enmity towards others dies untimely
and such hatred towards others also results in loss of wealth. Enmity
towards the King ( rulers of a country) results in total destruction and
hatred towards God Almighty results in the extinction of the family.

Varam vanam  vyaaghra gajendra sevitam.
Drumaaalayam  patra-phalaambu-sevanam.
Truneshu shayyaa shata-jeerna-valkalam.
Na bandhumadhye  dhanaheena jeevanam.

Varam = preferable.    Vanam = a forest.   Vyaaghra =
tiger.   Gajendra = King Elephant.  Sevitam = dwelt in.
Drumaalayam = dwelling in a tree.      Patra + phala+
ambu.    Patra =leaves.   Phala =fruits.   Ambu = water.
Sevanam = resorting to.    Truneshu=  grass.   Shayyaa=
bed.      Shata+jeerna + valkalam.       Shata = hundred.
Jeerna = worn out.   Valkalam = garments made  of the
bark of a tree.   Na = not.   Bandhu = relatives.  Madhye=
among, in the middle of.   Dhanaheena=poor.   Jeevanam=
existence, livelihood.

i.e.     In stead of living as a poor person among one's close
relatives, it is far more preferable to live in a forest dominated
by tigers and elephants, making a tree as a home and for food
depend on the vegetation,fruits and water available there ,sleep
in a bed made of grass, wear badly torn garments made from the
bark of trees.

( In this subhashita the predicament of  a poor person among his
rich relatives has been depicted in a sarcastic way by saying that
it is preferable to live in a forest full of wild animals and bear the
hardships but not the insult meted out to him by his rich relatives.)

Today's Subhashita .

|
Durjanam  sajjanam  kartumupaayo  nahi  bhootale.
Apaanam shaatadhaa  dhautam  na shreshthamindriam bhavet.

Durjanam = a wicked person.   Sajjanam = a noble person.
Kartumupaayo = kartum + upaayo.    Kartum = to do or make.
Upaayo = means. way.    Nahi = by no means, surely not.
Bhootale = on this Earth.    Apaanam = anus.   Shatadhaa=
hundred fold.   Dhautam = washing.  Na = not.   Shreshtam +
indriam.    Sreshtham = excellent, best.    Indriam = organ of
human body.    Bhavet = become.

i.e.    There is now way in this Earth to change a wicked person
into a noble person, just like  the anus of the human body which
can not become as one of the excellent organs of human body
even if it is washed with water hundreds of times.

(There are 5 organs of sense (eyes, nose, tongue, ears and skin)
and 5 organs of action (hands, feet, mouth, urinary tract and anus).
The organs of sense are termed as superior than the organs of
action.  Using the anus as a simile for wicked persons the author
has emphasised that they can not be transformed into noble persons.)

Today's Subhashita.

Yasya naasti svyam  pragyaa shaastram  tasya karoti Kim.
Lochanaabhyaam  viheenashcha  darpanah kim karishyati.

Yasya = of that person.   Naasti =non- existence.   Svyam =
himself.      Pragyaa = intelligence.      Shaastram = various
disciplines of learning, books or treatises.          Tasya = his.
Karoti = does.   Kim = what ?    Lochanaabhyaam =both the
eyes.   Viheenah+cha.   Viheenah =a person deprived of some
thing.    Cha=and.   Darpanah=a mirror.   Karishyati = can do.

i.e.    If a person is not intelligent, of what use is teaching him
various disciplines of learning ?   Of what use is a mirror to a
person who has no eyesight in both his eyes  ?

(In this Subhashita two statements have been given respectively
for an idiot and a blind person, and the author  asks what will be
the end result.  The answer  is that  just as a mirror is useless for
a blind person, so are the various disciplines of learning for  an
idiot.)
