December 2011's Subhashits

Na Yatna Koti Shatakai-rapi Dushtahh Sudhirbhaweat
Kim Marditopi Kastooryam Lashuno Yaati Saurabham.

i.e. Even after innumerable attempts crooked and mean persons
(dushta) do not become well mannered gentlemen ( Sudhi ), just as in spite of even rubbing Kasturi over garlic (Lahsun) it does not shed it's pungent smell.
Koti = 10 million number Shata = one hundred
Kasturi = A compound having very pleasant and sharp smell, which is derived from the navel of an antelope found in higher altitudes of Himalayas

Durjanah Priyavaadi Cha Naitad-vishwas-kaaranam,
Madhu Tishthati Jihwaagre Hridi Halaahalam Visham.

i.e. One should never trust a mean and cunning person (durjan) even if he is polite and soft-spoken (priyavaadi), because he may be honey-tongued, but his heart (hridi) will be full of poison (Halahal visha)
#In Hindu mythology 'Haalahal' poison came out from the Ocean during it's churning by the Gods and Demons. To save the humanity Lord Shiva swallowed it, as a result of which his throat became blue colored. That is why he is also called "Neel Kantha"

Eikopi gunawaan putro nirgunaih kim shataen taih:
Eiakshchandro Jagachhakshu-nakshatraih kim prayojanam.

i.e. It is better to have a noble son rather than having one hundred sons bereft of any qualities, just as only one moon is the darling of every body and no body cares for innumerable stars in the sky.

Mantri Guru aru Vaidya Jo Priya Bolahi Bhay Aasa
Raaj Dharma Tan teeni Kara Hoya Begi hi Nash.

If the Councilor (Mantri) Teacher (guru) and Vaidya (doctor) do not speak the truth and just to please the person being attended (i.e. King or the Ruler, Student or the learner, and a patient ) say otherwise for fear of displeasing the person concerned, then respectively the Kingdom, Dharma and health, all are lost.
(In the present times this is actually happening and as a result there is chaos every where.)

( In Aayurveda the cause of all ailments is atributed to imbalance in one's body of three elements (i) Kafa i.e.Phelgum (ii) Pitta i.e.blood and (iii) Wind i.e.Vayu)

i.e. Those who are alcoholic (Madyp) never speak truth, non-vegetarians (Masanshi) are bereft of mercy, and those who indulge in too much sexual activities (Kami) never acquire learning and knowledge, and poor persons (nirdhan) rarely rise in status.

Parokshe Kaarya Hantaaram Pratyakshe Priya Vaadinam
Varjayettadrisham Mitram Visha Kumbham Payo Mukham.

Yathodaya- Girou Dravyam Sannikarshen Deepyate
Tatha Sat-sannidhanena Heen Varnoopi Deepyate.

i.e. Just as at the time of Sun Rise the peak of a mountain covered with Snow is illuminated with a golden hue when Sun's rays fall for the first time on the peak of the mountain, and it appears as if the mountain is made of Gold, similarly in the company of noble and righteous persons ordinary and lowly persons also get recognition and praise.

Udyogahh Khalu Kartabyahh Falam Maarjaarwat Bhaweyt
Janma- Prabhrati Gaurnaasti Payahh Piwati Nittyashahh.

i.e.Entrepreneurship if done as a duty,it's results are like the bounty enjoyed by a Cat, which, although does not possess any cows, every day drinks milk only because of her enterprising nature.

Bhaagyam Phalati Sarvatra Na Cha Vidya Na Cha Paurusham
Samudra Mathanaalebhe Harirlakshmi Haraouh Visham.

i.e Whatever is destined for a person prevails every where and not the learning and efforts made by him. Even Gods are bound by destiny, otherwise during the course of "Samudra Manthan" Lord Vishnu would not have got Goddess Lakshmi as his bride and Lord Shiva would not have to be content by getting 'Halahal' Visha (the extremely powerful poison)

# According to Hindu Mythology Gods and Demons jointly churned the ocean in order to bring out various "Ratnas" from it's depths. Amrita (the nector which makes one immortal,Lakshmi and many other useful things were brought up including Halahal Visha (poison) There was a scramble to acquire best hings between Gods and Demons.During this process whereas others got useful things Lord Shiva was requested to save the World from the toxic effect of Halahal. Lord Shiva drank the poison and as a result his throat became blue colored. That is why he is also called "Neela Kantha"

Go Dhan Gaj Dhan Baji Dhan Aur Ratan Dhan Khani
Jab Aawe Santosh Dhan Sab Dhan Dhoori Samaan.

One may have herds of cows, elephants, horses and many mines of precious metals and jewels, but these all are like dust if he has the wealth of Santosh ( having full control over his desires which are generally unlimited)
