तत्र मित्र न वस्तव्यं यत्र नास्ति चतुष्ठयम् |
ऋ|ण दाता च वैद्यश्च श्रोत्रियः सजला नदी |
Tatra mitra na vastvyam yatra naasti chatushthayam.
Rin daataa cha vaidyashcha shrotriyh sajalaaa nadi|.
Tatra = there. Mitra = friend. Na = not Vastvym = stay or live in. Yatra = where.
Naasti =non existent. Chatushthayam = a set of 4. Rina daataa - money lender.
Vaidya = physician, an Ayurvedic doctor. Shrotriya = a scholar well versed in Vedas, the original Scriptures of Hindu Religion. Sajala = having water. Nadi = river.
Sajala Nadi = a perennial river (a river in which water flows throughout the year and it does not dry up)
i.e. O friend ! never live in a place where you do not have access to these four.facilities, namely
(i) a money lender (ii) a physician (iii) scholars and learned persons and (iv) a perennial river flowing nearby.
(Through this Subhashit the author emphasises the main prerequisites for a comfortable living at a place , namely availability of financial assistance and medical facilities, proper educational facilities for children and availability of potable water throughout the year. Ironically, all these facilities are in short supply or some of them are non existent in most of the towns and places due to faulty planning and maladministration.)
