असज्जनायाशु वरं न दद्यात्प्रीतितो नृपः |
वरं भस्मासुरायेशः दत्वा नीतिफलं गतः || - महासुभषितसंग्रह (3658)
अर्थ - हे राजन् ! दुष्ट व्यक्तियों पर किसी कारण वश प्रसन्न हो कर भी
उन्हें मनवाञ्छित वर कभी नहीं देना चाहिये | देखो न, भस्मासुर को वरदान
दे कर भगवान शिव को किस प्रकार कष्ट उठाना पडा था |
(भस्मासुर की तपस्या से प्रसन्न हो कर भगवान शिव ने उसे वरदान से दिया कि
जिस किसी के सिर पर वह् हाथ रख देगा वह् तुरन्त भस्म हो जायेगा | इस वरदान
की जांच भस्मासुर ने शिव जी के ऊपर ही करनी चाही | तब विष्णु भगवान् ने 'मोहिनी''
अवतार ले कर भस्मासुर को मूर्ख बना कर उसे स्वयं अपने ही ऊपर हाथ रखने के
लिये प्रेरित किया जिस से वह् स्वयं भस्म हो गया | इस कथानक को दृष्टान्त के
रूप में प्रयुक्त कर एक राजा को राजनीति की शिक्षा दी गयी है | )
Asajjanaayaashu varam na daddyaatpreetito nrupah.
Varam bhasmaasuraayeshh datvaa neetiphalam gatah.
Asajjanaayaashu = wicked and mean prsons. Varam = a boon.
Na= not. Dadyaatpreetito = dadyaat + preetito. Dadyaat =
give. Preetito = as a favour. Nrupah = O King !
Bhasmaasuraayeshah = to Bhasmaasur. Datvaa = by giving.
Neetiphalam = end result of a policy decision. Gatah - happened.
(According to Hindu Mythology Bhasmasur was a Demon who pleased
God Shiva by undergoing penance (Tapa); Shiva granted him a boon
( a wish to be fulfilled).The Demon asked Shiva to give him the power
of burning to ash any one on whose forehead he puts his hand. Without
considering the consequences such power was granted by Lord
Shiva. whereupon Bhasmaasur tried to test this power by putting his
hand on Lord Shiva's forehead. To save Shiva Lord Vishnu took the
incarnation of 'Mohini' the enchantress and tricked the Demon to test
the boon on himself, thus turning himself into ashes. (for details please

i.e. O king ! You should never grant a wish to mean and wicked persons
even if you may be pleased with them due to any reason. See, how much
trouble Lord Shiva had to face by granting a boon to Bhasmaasur.
(Through this Subhashita the author is warning a king of the inherent danger in
granting the wishes of mean and wicked persons, by quoting the legend of
Bhasmaasur in Hindu Mythology.)
