जन्मेदं व्यर्थतां नीतं भवभोगोपलिप्सया |
काचमूल्येन विक्रीतो हन्त चिन्तामणिर्मया || = सुभषितरत्नाकर
अर्थ - हाय ! सांसारिक भोगों में लिप्त रह कर मैने चिन्तामणि
के समान अमूल्य अपने इस जीवन को साधारण कांच के मूल्य पर
बेच कर व्यर्थ ही गंवा दिया है |
(भारतीय तथा बौद्ध साहित्य में चिन्तामणि नामक एक रत्न का वर्णन
है जो सभी इच्छाओं की पूर्ति करने में सक्षम है | मानव जीवन की तुलना
इसी रत्न से की गयी है और उसका सदुपयोग न कर विषय वासनाओं में
लिप्त रहना इस अमूल्य मणि को कांच के मूल्य पर बेचने के समान है )

Kaachmoolyena vikreetam hant chintamanirmayaa.
Janmedam = janma +idam. Janma = birth. Idam = this.
neetam = entered into, taken. Bhavabhogopalipsayaa =
Bhava + bhogopalipsayaa. Bhava + bhoga +upalipsaa.
Bhava - worldly existence. Bhoga = carnal and sensual
enjoyment Upalipsayaa = desires Kaacha = ordinary
glass. Moolyena = cost of, price. Vikreetam = sold.
Hant = an expression of sorrow or surprise. Chintaamanih +
mayaa = Chintaamanirmayaa. Chintamanih = the fabulous
gem mentioned in Hindu and Buddhist mythology,supposed to
fulfil all the desires of a person who possesses it. Mayaa =
by me.
i.e. Woe betide me ! by indulging in worldly carnal and sensual
pleasures I have wasted my precious life akin to the fabulous
'Chantamani' jewel being sold at the price of ordinary glass bead.
(Human existence has been compared with 'Chintamani' and not
utilising it for good causes has been termed as selling a precious jewel
at the price of an ordinary glass bead,)
