दूरस्थाः पर्वताः रम्याः वेश्याः च मुखमण्डने |
युद्धस्य तु कथा रम्या त्रीणि रम्याणि दूरतः || - संस्कृत सुभाषितानि
भावार्थ - ऊंचे और दुर्गम पर्वत तथा अपने मुख को विभिन्न सौन्दर्य
प्रसाधनों से सुसज्जित की हुई (मेकअप किये हुए ) एक वेश्या दूर से ही
देखने में सुन्दर लगते हैं | इसी प्रकार युद्ध का वर्णन भी सुनने में ही
अच्छा लगता है | इन तीनों को जितनी दूर से देखा या सुना जाय उतना ही
श्रेयस्कर है |
Doorasthaah parvataah ramyaah veshyaah cha mukhamandane.
Yuddhasya tu kathaa ramyaa treeni ramyaani dooratah.
Doorasthaah = staying far away., remote. Parvataah = mountains.
Ramyaa = pleasing, beautiful. Vershyaa = a prostitute. Cha =
and. Mukhamandane = with makeup. Yuddhyasya = a battle's
Tu = and. Kathaa = story. Treeni = these three. Ramyaani =
appear beautiful. Dooratah = from far away.
i.e. Mountains appear to be beautiful if viewed from far away and
so also a prostitute with a heavy makeup. Description of a battle is
interesting only while listening to it.. So, all these three are pleasing
and beautiful only when seen and listened to from far away.
जिह्वे प्रमाणं जानीहि भाषणे भोजने तथा ।

क्षणत्यागे कुतो विद्या कणत्यागे कुतो धनम्
