आज का सुभाषित / Today's Subhashita.

किं तेन जातु जातेन मातृयौवनहारिणा |
आरोहति न यः स्वस्य  वंशस्याग्रे ध्वजो यथा ||
                      =  सुभाषित रत्नाकर (कल्पतरु)

भावार्थ -      केवल अपनी माता के यौवन और सौन्दर्य को
नष्ट करने वाली ऐसी  संतान  के जन्म लेने  का क्या लाभ
जो अपने कुल (वंश ) की शोभा(परम्परा) को उसी  प्रकार नहीं
बढाता है जैसा कि एक ध्वजा (झण्डा) एक लम्बे बांस  के सिरे
पर फहरा कर सुशोभित होती  है  ?

(इस सुभाषित में  'वंश' शब्द  दो विभिन्न अर्थों में  (१)  किसी
परिवार की परम्परा  तथा (२) एक बांस  के  लम्बे डण्डे के रूप मे
लिया गया है | एक गुणी संतान अपने वंश की शोभा उसी प्रकार
बढाती  है जैसा कि एक झण्डा बांस के सिरे पर फहरा कर सुशोभित
होता है | इस तथ्य को एक सुन्दर उपमा के रूप में प्रयुक्त किया
गया है |)

Kim tenu jaata jaatena maatruyauvanahaarinaa.
Aarohati na yah svasya vmshaasyaagre dhvajo yathaa.

Kim = what ?     Tena = his    Jaatena = being born.
Maatru = mother.      Yauvan = youth .    Haarinaa =
destroyer.    Aarohati =rises up, ascends. Na = not.
Yah =   who.    Svasya = one's own.    Vmshasyaagre=
Vmshasya+ agre.     Vmshasya = of the family dynasty .
a bamboo pole's   Agre = top end., foremost.   Dhvajo =
a flag.     Yathaa = for instance, like a.

i.e.     What purpose is served by the birth of  a child as a
destroyer of the youth and beauty of his/her mother, if
he/she does not increase  the name and fame of his/her
dynasty, just like a flag hoisted  and fluttering atop a long
bamboo pole  ?

(In this Subhashita the word 'Vmsha' has two meanings ,
namely (1) a family dynasty, and (2) a long bamboo pole,
which has been used as a simile for the family dynasty.)
