शिरसि विधृतोSपि नित्यं यत्नादपि सेवितो बहुस्नेहैः |
तरुणीकच इव नीचः कौटिल्यं नैव विजहाति ||

भावार्थ - एक युवती यद्यपि नित्य अपने सिर के केशों को बडे
यत्न और प्रेम पूर्वक तैल लगा कर संवारती है फिर भी उसके केश
आपस में उलझना नहीं छोडते हैं | वैसे ही नीच व्यक्ति भी उनके
साथ चाहे कितना ही प्रेमपूर्वक व्यवहार क्यों न किया जाये वे
अपनी स्वभावगत कुटिलता को नहीं छोडते हैं |

Shirasi vidhrutopi nityam yatnaadapi sevito bahusnahaih.
Taruneekacha iva neechah kautilyam naiva vijahati.
Shirasi = from the head. Vidhrutopi = vidhruto+api,
Vidhruto = preserved. Nityam = daily. Yattnaadapi =
yatnaat + api. Yatnaat = with efforts. Api = even.
Sevito = served, pampered. Bahu = much. Snehai =
(i)affection (ii) oil. Tarunee = a young lady. Kacha=
hairs of the head. Iva = like the... Neechah = a wicked
and mean person. Kautilyam = crookedness, curvature.
Naiva = no, not. Vijahaati = give up.
i.e. A young woman daily grooms her hair with much care
and devotion by applying hair oil to them , but still the hairs
continue to get entangled with each other. Likewise, wicked
and mean persons also do not give up their crookedness, no
matter how nicely we may treat them.
(The above Subhashita has been classified under the head
'condemnation of wicked persons' . Their crooked nature has
been highlighted through a befitting simile. )
