आज का सुभाषित / Today's Subhashita.

एक  एव खगो  मानी  चिरं जीवतु चातकः  |
म्रियते वा  पिपासायां याचते वा पुरन्दरम्  ||
                  - सुभाषित रत्नाकर (शार्ङ्गधर )

भावार्थ -   ओ  चातक पक्षी !  हमारी इच्छा है कि तुम चिरकाल
तक जीवित रहो |  अकेले तुम ही एक ऐसे पक्षी हो जो इतने हठी
विचार वाले हो कि प्यास लगने पर या तो इन्द्र देव से जलवृष्टि
की याचना करते हो या प्यासे ही मर जाते हो |

(उपर्युक्त सुभाषित भी एक 'अन्योक्ति ' है  |संस्कृत साहित्य में यह
मान्यता है कि चातक पक्षी केवल स्वाति नक्षत्र में हुई जलवृष्टि के
समय ही अपनी प्यास बुझाता है और अन्य किसी समय पर हुई
वृष्टि से नहीं चाहे वह प्यास से मर ही क्यों न जाय  | लाक्षणिक रूप से
इस 'अन्योक्ति' का तात्पर्य  यह है  कि महान व्यक्ति अपने विचारों
और कर्तव्य पर दृढ रहते हैं चाहे उन्हें इसके लिये अपने प्राण भी क्यों
न त्यागने पडें |)

 Eka  eva  khago  maanee  chiram jeevatu  chaatakah.
Mriyate  vaa pipaasaayaam  yaachite  vaa  purandaram.

Eka = 0ne.    Eva = really.   Khago = a bird.   Maanee =
proud, high minded.     Chiram =  long time.   Jeevatu =
live.    Chaatakah = name of a bird (There is a folk lore
that this bird quenches its thirst only from the rain falling
on the earth during a particular celestial position called
'Svaati  Nakshatra')       Mriyate = die.    Vaa = or , and.
Pipaasaayaam =   due to thirst.    Yaachite= imploring.
Purandaram = Indra, the God of rain.

i.e.        O 'Chatak' bird !   we wish that you enjoy a long
lifespan.  You are the only specie  among all birds who is
so proud and high minded that you implore Indra,the Rain
God, to provide you with water for quenching your thirst
and in absence thereof would rather prefer to die.

(This Subhashita is an 'Anyokti'  (allegory) The underlying
idea behind it is that great and noble men remain firm on
their duty and high ideals and do not hesitate even to die
to achieve their objective.
