आज का सुभाषित / Today's Subhashita.

गुणवत्तरपात्रेण  छाद्यन्ते  गुणिनां गुणाः  |
रात्रौ दीपशिखाकान्तिर्न  भानावुदिते सति  ||

भावार्थ -     गुणवान व्यक्तियों  के गुण उनसे भी अधिक गुणवान
व्यक्तियों की उपस्थिति में उसी प्रकार  नहीं दिखाई देते  है जैसे कि
एक दीपक की लौ से उत्पन्न  हुआ प्रकाश रात्रि में ही दिखाई देता है
और सूर्य के उदय होने पर प्रभावी नहीं रहता है |

Gunavattarapaatrena cchaayante  guninaam gunaah.
Raatrau deepashikhaakaantirna bhaanaavudite sati.

Gunavattar = more excellent.   Paatrena = any body
worthy of or  abounding in a virtue, a capable person's.
Chaadyante = conceals, masks   Guninaam =virtuous
persons.   Gunaah = virtues.   Raatrau during the night.
Deepshikhaa + kaantih +na     Deepashikaa =  the flame
of a lamp.     Kaantih = brightness.       Na = not.
Bhaanaavudite = bhaanau + udite.    Bhaanau = the Sun.
Udite = rising of the Sun. 

i.e.      The virtues of noble persons remain concealed in
the presence of  persons having more excellent virtues,
e.g. the flame of a lamp shines only in the night and loses
its sheen when the Sun rises in the morning.
