Today's Subhashita.

Re padmanidala tavaatra  mayaa  charitram,
Drushtam vichitramiva  yadviditam  dhruvam tat.
Yaireva shuddha salilaih paripaalitastvam.
Tebhyah prathagbhavasi pankabavosi yasmaat.

Re =   O !    Padmineedala = lotus plants.   Tavaatra =
tava + atra.    Tava = your.    Atra = here.      Mayaa =
my.   Charitram=behaviour, conduct.   Drushtam =See
Vichitramiva = vichitram+ iva.   Vichitram =  amazing.
Iva = like (for comparison) Yadviditam = yat +viditam.
Yat = that.   Vditam= known as.  Dhruvam =permanent.
Tat = that.   Yaireva = yaih + eva.   Yaih = they.   Eva=
really.   Shuddha = pure.   Salilaih = water.  Paripaalitah+
tvam.    Paripalitah = nurtured, grown in.   Tvam = you.
Tebhyah = they.   Prathagbhaavasi= praathak +bhavasi.
Prathak = separated.    Bhavati = becomes.  Pankabhavosi= water
pankabhavo +asi.   Pankabhavo = growing in mud and slush.
Asi= is.   Yasmaat = because.

i.e.   O cluster of lotus flowers !  I have observed an amazing and well known
behaviour in you, that whosoever tries to grow you in fresh water you abandon
him (they fail to do so) because you like to grow only in mud and slush.

(The above Subhashita is an allegory relating to Lotus flowers.  The underlying
idea is that all living beings have inborn peculiarities and  they can not grow in
an environment  other than their natural environment. )

Vaanijyena gatah  sa mey gruhapatirvaartaapi na shrooyate.

Baalaaham navayauvanaa  nishi  katham sthatavyamasmingruhe.
Saayam samprati vartate patthik hey sthaanantaram gamyataam.

Vaanijyena = for doing business.   Gatah = has gone.   Sa = he.
mey= my.   Gruhapatirvaartaapi  = gruhapatih + vaartaa+  api.
Gruhapatih =master of the house.   Vaartaa = information, news.
Api = even.   Na = not.    Shrooyate = is heard.  Praatastajjananee=
praatah + tat + jananee.    Praatah = morning.   Tat = his.   Jananee=
mother.   Prasoota = recently born   Tanayaa = daughter.  Jaamatru=
son- in-law.  Geham = residence.   Gataa = has gone.   Baalaaham=
Baalaa+aham.   Baalaaa= young girl.  Aham = I.  Navayauvanaa=
adolascent young girl.  Nishi =night.  katham=how ?  Sthatavyam=
stay.    Asmin = in this.     Gruhe = house.    Saayam =evening.
Samprati = now.  Vartaoute = at present.   Pathik= traveller.  Hey= O !
Sthaanantaram=  another place.     Gamyataam = with accessibility.

i.e.    O traveller !  the head of my household (my husband) has gone
abroad to do business and there is no news about him.   His mother has
just today in the morning gone  to her son-in-law to look after her
daughter and the new born chid. I am myself a young woman alone in
the house.   So, under such circumstance how can I provide shelter to
you in the night ?   The evening is fast approaching. Therefore, it would
be appropriate if you go to some other place easily accessible to you.

(This Subhashita is also an allegory, which requires a reply.  The lady
of the house has politely declined to provide a shelter overnight to the
traveller and asked him to search for another shelter.)

Today's Subhashita.

Asatyam-apratyaya-moola-kaaranam kuvaasanaa-sadbha-
samruddhi-vaaranam.
Vipannidaanam paravanchanorjitam krutaparaadham  kriti-
bhirvivarjitam.

asatyam+apratyaya+ moola+kaaranam,   Asatyam = telling lies.
Apratyaya = dstrust.   Moola =root, main.   Karanam =reason.
Kuvaasanaa = bad desire.   Sadma =  abode, house..  Samruddhi+
prosperity, weaalth.   Vaaranam = warding off.    Vipannidaanam=
cause of a calamity.    Paravanchanorjitam = para = vanchano =
arjitam.  Para =others.  Vanchano = decieving.   Arjitam =earned.
Krutaaparaadham = Krutaa= done.   Aparaadham = crime.
Krutibhirvivarjitam = krutibhih + vivarjitam.    Krutibhih =virtues
Vivarjitam = deprived of.

i.e.      The main cause of distrust among people is telling lies ,  and
desire for having or doing some thing prohibited results in warding
off the prosperity of the household.  Acquiring wealth by cheating
others results in a big calamity, and a person who indulges in various
other crimes is deprived of all his virtues.

Today's Subhashita.

Dhanuh paushpam maurvee madhukara-mayee chanchala-drushaam.
Drushaam kono  baanah suhruda-vijitaatmaa himakarah.
Tathaapyeko-nanga-stribhuvana-mapi vyaakulayati.
Kriyaa-siddhih satve  bhavati mahataam nopakarane.

Dhanuh = the bow.   Pushpam = flowers.   Maurvee = string of a bow.
Madhukaramayee = consisting of honey bees.  Chanchal = moving,
flickring.    Drushaam = eyes.   kono = corner,  (sideways glance  by
the eyes)      Baanah = arrows.   Suhruda =  friend.    Vijjitaatmaa =
winner of minds,  Himakarah =Moon. ( Tathaa + api + eko + anangah +
tribhuvanam + api.)  Tathaa = even then.    Eko= alone.   Ananga=
The God of Love in Hindu Mythology, who is bodiless but controls
the activities of all living beings.   Tribhuvanam= three worlds i.e.
earth, sky and the underworld.  Vyakulayati=agitates. Kriyaasidddhi=
accomplishment of an action.   Satve =  valour .   Bhavati = happens
Mahataam = great men.   Nopakarane = na + upakarane,   Na = not.
Upakarane =  tools for accomplishing a task,

i,e,     The bow of 'Ananga' , the God of Love, is made of flowers and
its string is comprised of bees, the arrows are the sideways glance of a
beautiful lady, and the Moon, who controls the minds of all, is his close
friend.  Yet, the God of Love  alone  agitates and controls all the living
beings on all the three worlds.  Truly, all the great and powerful  persons
depend more on  their valour rather than on the tools for accomplishing
them.

(The above Subhashita is classified as 'In praise of great men' .The episode
of killing the God of Love by God Shiva, described in Hindu Mythology,
is the background of this verse.  God Shiva gave a boon to the wife of the
God of Love that henceforth he will control all living beings without having
any body. So, the idea behind this Subhashita is that great men depend more
on their valour rather than on the tools for accomplishing any task.)

Bhoh paantha pustak  adhara kshanamaatra tishtha.
Vaidyosi kim ganita-shaastra-vishaaradosi,
kenaushadena mama  pashyati bharturambaa.
kimvaagamishyati patih suchira-pravaasee.

Bhoh =  Hello (salutaation).    Paantha= traveller.   Pustakdhara=
holding a book.    Kshnamaatra= only for a moment.   Tishtha=
wait.   Vaidyosi = vaidyo + asi.    Vaidyo = a physician .  Asi =
are.    Ganitashastra = mathematics.    Visharadosi = visharado+
asi.    Visharado = learned , expert.   Kenaushadhena=   kena +
aushadhena.    Kena = by which.    Aushadhena = medicine.
Mama = my.   Pashyati = sees.   Bharturambaa = bhartuh + ambaa.
Bhartuh = husband's  Ambaa =mother. kimvaa + aagamishyati.
Kimvaa = perhaps.   Aagamishyati =will come.    Patih = husband.
Suchira = very long time.  Pravaasee = living abroad.

i.e.     O traveller  holding a book on your hand !  please stop for a
moment. Are you a physician or a scholar of mathematics (astrology) ?
Which medicine will enable my mother-in-law to see my husband,
and when will my husband living abroad since long will return ?

(This Subhashita is categorised  as an allegory,which also requires a
reply. Here a lady indirectly tells the traveller about the blindness of
her mother-in-law and absence of her husband, who is abroad since
long. )

Today's Subhashita.

Hastee sthoolatanuh sa-cha-aankusha-vaashah kim hasti
maatromkusho.
Vajrenaabhihataa patanti girayah kim shailamaatrah pavih.
Deepe prajjvalite vinashyati tamah kim deepamaatram tama-
stejo yasya viraaajate sa  balavaan sthooleshu kah pratyayh.

 Hastee = an elephant.    Sthoolatanuh = large body.  Sa =he.
cha = and.    Ankusha=an iron hook .  Vashah =under control.
Kim = what ?    Hasti = elephant.    Maatro = being nothing.,
merely.    Vajrenaa = by the 'Vajra' (the weapon of Indra,the
God of rain , in modern parlance the strike of the lightening)
Abhihataa=struck by.  Patanti=fall down.   Giraya=mountains.
Shailamaatrah = merely a small  hill.   Pavih = thunderbolt.
Deepe = an  oil lamp.  Prajjvalite = lighted.  Vinashyati = gets
destroyed.    Tamah = darkness.   Deepamaaram = merely a
lamp.   Tejo = authority, splendor.   Yasya = whose.  Viraajate=
rules, excels.   Sa = he.   Balavaan = powerful.   Sthooleshu =
big in size.   Kah = what     Pratyayah = trust, faith.

i.e.     A small iron hook can control a large elephant . Is the hook
merely a hook for an  elephant ? Big mountains crumble when the
lightening strikes them. So, is the lightening  merely a lightening
for a mountain ?   When a lamp is lit  the darkness disappears.
So, is the lamp merely a lamp before the darkness ? The conclusion
is that between small and big whosoever rules is termed as powerful
and some thing merely of big size can not be trusted.

Today's Subhashita.

Taaneendriyaanyavikalaani  Manastadeva.
Saa buddhirapratihataa  vachanam tadeva.
Arthoshmanaa virahitah purushah sa eva.
hyanyah kshanena bhavateeti vichitrametat.

Taaneendriyaanyavikalaani = taani+indriyaani +avikalaani.
Taani = they.    Indriyaani = organs of sense    Avikalaani =
unimpaired.    Manastadeva = manah+ tadeva.      Manah =
views, opinion, mind.   Tadeva = like that.    Saa = she (that)
Buddhirapratihataa= buddhih + apraatihataa.    Buddhih =
intlligence, intuition.    Apratihataa = unimpaired, intact.
Vachanam = speech.    Arthoshmanaa = artho + ooshmanaa.
Artho = wealth.   Ushmanaa= by the heat of.   Virahitah =
devoid of.    Purushah =a person.   Sa = he.    Eva = really.
Hynyah =hi + anyah.   Hi = surely.   Anyah = extraordinary.
Kshenena =moment.   Bhavateeti =bhavati +iti.    Bahavati=
happens.      Iti = this.           Vichitrametat =vicitram + etat,
Vichitram = surprising,  amazing.      Etat = this.

i.e.      A person's  organs of sense remain unimpaired and the
mind also remains the same, his intellect  also remains intact
and so also his way of speaking courteously. Definitely such a
person would be devoid of pride (heat) for possessing immense
wealth. Is it not amazing that such an extraordinary person can
exist even for a moment ?

(This Subhashita is also classified as 'Censoring wealth and wealthy
persons' .The idea behind it is that wealth  makes a person  proud ,
which in turn results in destruction of his  health and intellect. )
