गतः स कालो यत्राSSसीदवज्ञा कल्पशाखिनाम् |
उदुम्बरफलेभ्योSपि स्पृहयामोद्य जीवितम् ||
अर्थ - अवज्ञा किये जाने के कारण पुराणों में वर्णित सभी इच्छाओं की पूर्ति करने में सक्षम कल्पवृक्ष
भी अब भूतकाल की वस्तु हो गया है | परन्तु एक साधारण उदुम्बर का वृक्ष जिस के फलों को सभी पसंद करते है अभी तक फलफूल रहा है |
(अतिशयोक्ति अलङ्कार का प्रयोग कर इस सुभाषित मे इस तथ्य को प्रतिपादित किया है कि अवज्ञा और
उचित आदर न होने से अत्यन्त उपयोगी वस्तु भी नष्ट हो जाती हैऔर् इसके विपरीत एक साधारण वस्तु भी उचित रख रखाव से नष्ट नहीं होती है | )
Gatah sa Kaalo yatraaseedavagyaa kalpashaakhinaam.
Udumbarphale bhyopi sprahyaamoddya jeevitam.
Gatah = gone. Sa = that. Kaalo = era (past periof of time). Yatraaseedavagya = yatra + aaseet +avagyaa. Yatra = where. Aaseet = exists, is. Avagyaa = disrespect, neglect.
Kalpashaakhinaam = The wish fulfilling tree in Hindu Mythology. This tree also originated from the Ocean during "Samudra Manthan " another legend in Hindu Mythology. Udumbarphalebhyopi = udumbar +
phalebhyo + api. Udumbar = cluster fig tree. (botanical name - Ficus Glomerata) Phalebhyo = fruits. Api = even. Sprahayaamodya = sprahayaamo + adya. Sprahayaamo = longing for, coveting.
Adya= today. Jeevitam = living, thriving.
i.e. Due to neglect and disrespect, even the legendary "Kalpavruksha" - the wish fulfilling tree has now become extinct and of a bygone era, whereas the ordinary "Udumbar" -cluster fig tree - liked for its figs is still alive and thriving.
( By using a hyperbole the author has highlighted the fact that at times most useful things and species become extinct due to neglect and disrespect, whereas ordinary things thrive because they are coveted by people.)
