एकोऽपि गुणवान पुत्रो निर्गुणेन शतेन किं |
एकश्चन्द्रस्तमो हन्ति न चा तारा सहस्रशः || - महासुभषितसंग्रह
भावार्थ - केवल एक ही गुणवान पुत्र होने की तुलना में एक सौ
गुणहीन पुत्रों के होने से क्या लाभ ? उदाहरणार्थ अकेला चन्द्रमा ही
आकाश मे अन्धकार को नष्ट करने में समर्थ होता है है न कि हजारों
तारे |
Ekopi gunavaan putro nirgunena shatena kim.
Ekashchandrastamo hanti na cha taaraa sahasrashh.
Ekopi = eko + api. Eko = one. Api = even. Gunavaan=
virtuous, endowed with good qualities. Putro = a son.
Nirgunena = devoid of good qualities, worthless. Shatena =
one hundred. Kim = what? Ekashchandrastamo = ekah +
chandrah+ taamo. Ekah = one. Chandrah + Moon.
Tamo = darkness. Hanti = destroys. Na = not. Cha = and.
Tara= stars. Sahasrashh = by the thousands.
i.e. It is far better having only one virtuous son endowed with
good qualities rather than having one hundred sons devoid of
all good qualities, e.g. the Moon alone is capable of removing
the darkness in the sky and not thousands of stars.
