ऐश्वर्यतिमिरं चक्षुः पश्यच्चापि न पश्यति |
पश्चाद्विमलतां याति दारिद्र्यगुलिकाञ्जनैः ||- महासुभषितसंग्रह(८२०२)
भावार्थ - ऐश्वर्य के गर्व रूपी अन्धकार के कारण धनी लोग समाज में जो
विषमतायें और अभाव व्याप्त है उसे वे आंखें होते हुए भी नहीं देखने का
नाटक करते हैं | परन्तु कालान्तर में यदि गरीबी रूपी अञ्जन उनकी आखों
में लग जाये तो उनकी दृष्टि निर्मल हो जाती है और उन्हें वे विषमतायें और
अभाव स्पष्ट दिखाई देने लगते हैं |
Aishvaryatimiram chakshuh pashyacchapi na pashyati.
Pashchaadvimalataam yaati daaridryagulikaanjane,
Aishvarya = prosperity. Timiram = darkness, gloom. Chakshuh = eye.
Pashyacchapi= pashyat +cha+ api. Pashyat = seeing,beholding, Cha=
and. Api = even. Pashyati = sees. Pashchaadvimalataam = pashchaat+
vimalataam. Pashchat = afterwards, later. Vimalataam = clearness.
Yaati = achieve. Daaridryagulaikaanjane = daaridrya+ gulika+ anjane.
Daaridrya = poverty. Gulikaa = small globule. Anjana - an ointment of
lampblack soot used to clean and protect the eyes.
i.e. Rich persons in spite of seeing the miseries and inequality in the society
behave in such a way that they are unaware of them due to the darkness of
their affluence. But if afterwards per chance due to application of the ointment
of poverty in their eyes, their vision becomes clear and then they see the
anomalies around them.
