आज का सुभाषित / Today's Subhashita.

अरक्षिता  गृहे  रुद्धाः पुरुषैराप्तकारिभिः  |
आत्मानमात्मना यास्तु रक्षेयुस्ताः सुरक्षिताः ||
                                     - मनुस्मृति (९/१२ )

भावार्थ -   स्त्री की रक्षा बडे  समर्थ लोग भी घर में नियन्त्रित रख
कर के भी नहीं कर सकते है | अपने को सुरक्षित वही स्त्री रख सकती
है जो अपने धर्म  और कर्तव्य का विचार कर स्वतः अपनी इच्छा से
अपनी रक्षा करती है |

(यद्यपि मनुस्मृति में नारी को आजन्म पुरुषों के आधीन रहने
का निर्देश दिया गया है , उपर्युक्त श्लोक में उसे स्वयं अपनी
रक्षा करने के लिये सदैव तत्पर रहने का आह्वान किया गया है )


Arakshitaa  Gruhe Ruddhaah purushairaaptakaaribhih.
Aatmaanamaatmanaa  yaastu raksheyustaah surakshitaah.

Arakshitaa = unprotected. not guarded.    Gruhe = household
Ruddhaah = confined, blockaded.  Purushairaaptakaaribhih =
prushaih + aaptakaaribhih.    Purushaih = men.  Aptkaribhih=
dependable, trusted.   Atmaanamaatmanaa =aatmanam+
Aatmanaa.    Atmaanam =  by self,     Atmanaa = by  ourself.
Yaastu =  he/she who     Raksheyustaah = Raksheyuh + taah.
Raksheyuh = should protect.   Taah = they.   Surakshitaah=
Safe, well protected.

i.e.    Even powerful men can not guard and protect  their women
by confining them in their homes. Only that woman can protect
herself, who, considering her moral responsibility takes necessary
steps to protect herself.

(Although 'Manusmriti'  prescribes that women should remain under
the protection  of men throughout their lifespan, this shloka exhorts
them to take initiative to protect themselves and not rely only on men.)
