आज का सुभाषित / Today's Subhashita.

करान्  प्रसार्य रविणा दक्षिणाSSशाSवलंबिना  |
न  केवलमनेनाSSत्मा  दिवसोSपि  लघूकृतः  ||
                           - सुभाषित रत्नाकर (स्फुट )

भावार्थ -    अपने हाथ (किरणें ) फैला कर  सूर्य कुछ पाने की
आशा में दक्षिण दिशा की ओर जब प्रस्थान करता है तो वह न
केवल अपने को ही लघु (छोटा) कर देता है , दिवस को (दिन की
अवधि)को भी छोटा कर देता है |

(प्रस्तुत सुभाषित भी 'सूर्यान्योक्ति ' का एक उदाहरण है | इस में
ज्योतिष शास्त्र में व्यक्त सूर्य के सापेक्ष पृथ्वी की स्थिति , जिसे
दक्षिणायण और उत्तरायण कहते है ,को एक रूपक के रूप में प्रयुक्त
किया गया है |  दक्षिणायण में सूर्य पृथ्वी के दक्षिण गोलार्ध की ओर
प्रस्थान करता है, जिसके फलस्वरूप सूर्य का  प्रकाश  तथा दिन की
अवधि कम होती जाती है और रात्रि की अवधि बढ जाती है |  सूर्य का
हाथ (किरणे) फैलाना मांगने का प्रतीक है |  लाक्षणिक रूप से इस
सुभाषित का तात्पर्य यह है कि महान और तेजस्वी व्यक्तियों द्वारा
भी कुछ याचना करने  से न केवल उनकी गरिमा नष्ट  होती है , उनके
आश्रितों की भी गरिमा नष्ट होती है |)

Karaan prasaarya Ravinaa dakshinaashaavalimbinaa.
Na kevalamanenaatmaaa divasopi laghookrutah.

Karaan = hands (here the reference is of the rays of the Sun.
Prasaarya = spreading.   Ravina = by the Sun.   Dakshina +
aashaa+avalambinaa.    Dakshinaa=towards south and/or donation.
Aashaa = hope, expectation.    Avalambinaa = depending upon.. 
Na = not.   Kevalam +anenaa + aatmaa.   Kevalam = only .
Aatmaa=  himself.    Divaso + api.   Divaso =- day.   Api = even.
Laghookrutah = rendered shorter.

i.e.      By spreading his hands (the rays) with the hope of getting
some  donation (akin to begging) the Sun proceeds towards the south
direction (winter solstice), he not only belittles himself  but also
reduces the Day (duration of the day time) .

The above Subhashita is also an allegory using the movement of the
Sun in the firmament as a metaphor. During the winter solstice the
Sun moves  towards the south of the Equator, as a result of which
the days become shorter and the nights longer, thereby reducing the
intensity of the Sun.  The idea behind this is that not only mighty and
illustrious persons but also their dependents as well lose their status if
they seek some donation or help.)
