आज का सुभाषित / Today's Subhashita.

खद्योतो  द्योतते  तावद्यावन्नोदयते  शशी  |
उदिते  तु  सहस्रांशौ  न  खद्योतो  न  चन्द्रमाः  ||
                   - सुभाषित रत्नाकर (शार्ङ्गधर )

भावार्थ -   एक खद्योत (जुगनू ) रात्रि  को  तभी तक ज्योतित करता
है  जब तक कि  आकाश में चन्द्रमा का उदय नहीं होता है |  और सूर्य
के उदय होने पर न तो जुगनू और न  ही चन्द्रमा  का कोई महत्त्व रह
जाता है |

(प्रस्तुत सुभाषित एक 'अन्योक्ति' है और 'सूर्यान्योक्ति' के नाम से
संकलित  है |   लाक्षणिक रूप से इसका तात्पर्य यह है  कि किसी महान
और तेजस्वी व्यक्ति की उपस्थिति में साधारण जन महत्त्वहीन  हो
जाते हैं | )

Khadyoto dyotate taavadyaavannodayate shashee.
Udite tu  sahasraanshau na  khadyoto na chandramaa.

Khadyoto = firefly.   Dyotate = shines.  Taavadyaavannodayate =
taavat + na + udayate.    Taavat = until.   Na = not.   Udayate =
rises in the sky.    Sashee = the Moon.     Udite = after the rising
of.   Tu = but, and.   Saharaamshau = the Sun.   Na = not.
Chandramaa = the Moon.

i.e.      A firefly illuminates the night until the Moon rises in the
Sky.  But when the Sun rises in the Sky,  neither the firefly nor
the Moon  are of any relevance.

(This Subhashita is an 'allegory' (called 'Anyokti' in Sanskrit).The
idea behind it is that  ordinary people lose their relevance in the
presence of a great and illustrious person.)
